A 2016 materials-science study demonstrated an engineered thin film with coupled electrical and magnetic properties. It did not build or test a phone, computer, battery, or other device that lasts three months per charge. That interval was a speculative implication in a 2017 article, not a measured result.
What did the researchers make?
The team built atomically layered superlattices from lutetium ferrite compounds, LuFeO3 and LuFe2O4. By introducing individual FeO monolayers during growth, the researchers engineered a material in which electrical polarization and magnetic ordering are coupled near room temperature. The 2016 paper describes this as a method for constructing single-phase multiferroic materials: the study in Nature.

A magnetoelectric multiferroic combines electric and magnetic behavior: in this study, an electric field could control magnetism under specified laboratory conditions. That property is interesting for possible memory and computing technologies, where changing a magnetic state electrically might require less energy than other approaches. It is a materials result, however, not a finished memory chip or processor.

For the (LuFeO3)9/(LuFe2O4)1 superlattice, the researchers reported a magnetic transition temperature of 281 K, compared with 240 K for LuFe2O4. They also reported direct electric-field control of magnetism at 200 K. These figures describe the thin films and experimental conditions in the paper; they are not measurements of consumer electronics operating temperatures or battery performance.

Where did the three-month claim come from?
The phrase “devices that you only need to charge once every three months” comes from a 2017 Futurism article discussing the study. The paper did not report a device with that charging interval, and the university’s account did not demonstrate such a product.
The University of Michigan described future devices as potentially using 100 times less energy. That was an estimate about possible future applications, not an observed reduction in a commercial processor and not a battery-life test. The university’s announcement also quoted study coauthor John Heron: “Before this work, there was only one other room-temperature multiferroic whose magnetic properties could be controlled by electricity.” See the University of Michigan announcement.

What would it take to make a device last three months?
A material property alone cannot establish how long a device runs between charges. Researchers would need to integrate the material into functioning memory or computing hardware, show that the resulting system uses substantially less energy in realistic workloads, and account for the rest of the device—including its display, radio, processor, battery, and power-management circuitry. Neither the Nature study nor the university announcement reports those steps or a three-month battery-life result.
