One 2024 sensor detected PFOA and PFBA; a distinct 2026 design reported a faster, more sensitive PFOA result under its own experimental conditions. For drinking-water testing with a regulatory purpose, use EPA-recognized laboratory methods and ask your state laboratory certification program for guidance.
What does a lateral-flow PFAS sensor do?
A lateral-flow test moves a liquid sample across a strip or membrane. In the 2024 MIT-led study, the strip’s test line contained a fluorous surfactant formulation and undoped polyaniline. When perfluoroalkyl acids reached the material, acidification doped the polyaniline and increased its conductivity; an electrical resistivity measurement read the change. The paper reports a 104-fold conductivity enhancement for the described method. [c001]

The study reported detection limits of 400 ppt for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and 200 ppt for perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA). Those are results for two named analytes in the study’s setup—not evidence that the strip detects every PFAS or provides a comprehensive PFAS panel. The authors said the method “can be expanded for wide-scale environmental and at-home water testing,” describing a potential application rather than announcing a consumer product. [c001]

What did the newer sensor study find?
A separate 2026 Environmental Science & Technology study reported a molecularly imprinted polyaniline film on a lateral-flow membrane. Researchers used PFOA as a template to create cavities that adsorb PFOA. Its carboxylic-acid functionality locally dopes the polymer and changes its conductance.

That study reported a PFOA detection limit of 3.1 pM (1.3 ng/L) and a readout within 15 minutes. In tested drinking, lake, and river water samples, it reported matrix-spike recovery of 95.0–107.1%. These findings apply to this separate design and its experiments; they are not results for the 2024 MIT sensor, nor a head-to-head comparison. The study describes an on-site environmental monitoring and screening research platform, not a validated retail home test. [c002]
How do the research approaches compare?
| Study | Target and design | Reported result | What the result does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 MIT-led e-LFA [c001] | PFOA and PFBA; conductivity change in polyaniline read by resistivity measurement | Detection limits of 400 ppt for PFOA and 200 ppt for PFBA | Detection of all PFAS, broad household-water validation, consumer availability, or regulatory approval |
| 2026 molecularly imprinted membrane [c002] | PFOA; imprinted polyaniline film with PFOA-binding cavities | 3.1 pM (1.3 ng/L) detection limit; readout within 15 minutes; 95.0–107.1% matrix-spike recovery in tested drinking, lake, and river samples | Detection of all PFAS, performance in every household sample, consumer availability, or regulatory approval |
The reported values should not be treated as proof that one device is better overall. The studies use different designs and experimental setups, and the 2026 result is for PFOA rather than a broad PFAS panel. A useful comparison asks which compounds were tested, what detection limit applies under the stated conditions, what water matrices were validated, and whether the test is intended for screening or a regulatory decision.

What should I use to test drinking water now?
For testing with a recognized regulatory purpose, EPA identifies Methods 533 and 537.1 as approved for monitoring under the PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation and UCMR 5. Together, those methods can measure 29 PFAS in drinking water. EPA recommends that homeowners contact their state laboratory certification program to learn whether certified PFAS-analysis laboratories are available or what other testing options the state recommends. [c003]
Other methods may be appropriate for purposes outside UCMR 5 or regulatory compliance, but EPA says it has not evaluated those alternatives for those uses. Choose a method based on the data quality you need, and ask the laboratory or state program what analytes it covers and what sampling instructions apply. The lateral-flow research devices described above should not be called EPA-approved drinking-water compliance methods. [c003]

How to judge a rapid PFAS test
- Analyte coverage: Check the specific PFAS named in the method. The 2024 study reports PFOA and PFBA results; the 2026 membrane is imprinted for PFOA. Neither result supports a claim of detecting all PFAS. [c001] [c002]
- Detection limit and decision threshold: Compare the limit with the purpose of testing and the relevant threshold, while checking that units, analyte, and study conditions match. A lower reported number from a separate experiment does not by itself prove greater overall reliability.
- Timing and workflow: The 2026 study reports readout within 15 minutes, but that is a research result, not a guarantee for a consumer workflow. For laboratory testing, follow the selected lab’s sample-handling instructions. [c002] [c003]
- Water-matrix evidence: The 2026 researchers reported results in selected drinking, lake, and river samples. That does not establish performance in every household’s water, and it does not validate the 2024 prototype across household water types. [c002]
- Intended use and approval: Distinguish a research screening sensor from a method approved for a specific compliance purpose. EPA’s approval statements apply to Methods 533 and 537.1 for the named monitoring programs, not to these lateral-flow studies. [c003]
Can I buy one of these lateral-flow tests?
The cited studies do not establish that either device is commercially available as an at-home test. Their findings support research potential, but do not demonstrate a consumer-ready product or consumer-use validation. A filter is a separate treatment option, not a test: EPA advises consumers to check certification-body product directories for products certified to treat PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS, and to verify the exact product’s certification and claims. [c004]
