What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A used Lenovo Tiny running continuously can use relatively little electricity, but the actual cost depends on its average power draw while streaming and your local electricity rate. As a transparent example, a 15-watt load running for 30 days uses 10.8 kWh; at the U.S. Department of Energy’s illustrative federal-facility rate of $0.11/kWh, that works out to about $1.19 for the month. That is a scenario, not a guaranteed bill: the 15-watt figure is not a measurement of your particular PC encoding a stream.
Calculate the electricity cost for your setup
Use the PC’s average power draw at the wall, the hours it runs, and your electricity tariff:

- Energy in kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours
- Electricity cost = energy in kWh × your price per kWh
For an always-on setup, use the number of hours in the period you want to estimate. A 30-day month has 720 hours; a 365-day year has 8,760 hours.

| Period | Energy at a continuous 15 W | Cost at $0.11/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days | 10.8 kWh | $1.19 |
| 365 days | 131.4 kWh | $14.45 |
The $0.11/kWh figure is the U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program’s illustrative average price at federal facilities as of July 2024. It is not a residential electricity rate. Use your own utility tariff in the formula to estimate your bill.

What a used Lenovo Tiny may draw
ServeTheHome measured 12–15 W at idle at 120 V for its tested quad-core Lenovo ThinkCentre M920 Tiny in a 2020 review. That measurement offers an order-of-magnitude reference for one model, not a specification for every Lenovo Tiny and not a measurement of continuous streaming. The exact model, CPU, configuration, encoding workload and attached equipment all matter.
To estimate your own stream, measure the whole PC at the wall while it is doing the intended work. Let it run in representative conditions long enough to capture typical operation; a momentary peak or the power adapter’s rated capacity does not tell you its average consumption. If a display or other equipment will also stay on, measure those separately and add their energy use.

Check that the Tiny can sustain the stream
A low electricity estimate does not establish that a particular PC can encode your desired stream continuously. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 encoding options, with constant bitrate encoding and frame rates up to 60 fps. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not proof that a specific used PC can handle the encoding workload. YouTube also transcodes live streams into different output formats and recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s live encoder settings have the current details.

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate. For example, a 5 Mbps stream calls for at least 6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity under that recommendation. Treat this as a network-planning margin, not a guarantee against outages: YouTube notes that a connectivity disruption can break a live stream. Test the connection and monitor stream health while testing your setup. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

What the electricity estimate does—and does not—include
- The calculation covers the measured equipment load multiplied by your operating hours and electricity tariff.
- Include the display, router or other devices only if they are part of the equipment you intend to leave running; account for their loads separately if they are not included in the PC measurement.
- The calculation does not establish whether the PC can encode reliably, whether the internet connection will stay up, or what any non-electricity costs may be.
- Your result depends on your location’s tariff and the PC’s actual average draw during the stream. Do not treat the 15 W example as a universal Lenovo Tiny measurement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave a PC running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
