The Mac’s electricity cost depends on its measured average power draw and your local tariff; its full cost also includes hardware amortization. A cloud estimate depends on the provider, region, machine, billing minimum, storage, and network terms. Compare those inputs—not a Mac’s maximum power rating against an arbitrary virtual-machine price.
What a fair comparison includes
For a stream sent to YouTube, the computer or server encodes and uploads the source feed. YouTube says it transcodes a live ingest into multiple formats for viewers, so do not count viewer delivery as part of the encoder’s cost unless your cloud architecture actually serves viewers itself. YouTube’s encoder settings describe ingest guidance and recommend testing with representative audio and motion while monitoring stream health.

- Local: electricity, the Mac’s purchase cost spread over an assumed useful life, and any incremental internet, backup power, storage, cooling, or replacement costs.
- Cloud: compute or Dedicated Host runtime, persistent storage, applicable network charges, and any monitoring or restart service needed for the setup.
- Both: software compatibility, upload capacity, interruption risk, and the time or services needed to recover when something fails.
The inputs that most change the answer are your electricity tariff, actual average wall draw, hardware life assumption, cloud region and instance, required operating system, and whether the job is only sending an ingest to YouTube.
Estimate the M2 Mac mini’s local cost
Use power figures as context, not as your stream’s consumption
Apple lists 7 W idle and 50 W CPU maximum for a 2023 Mac mini configuration with M2, 24 GB unified memory, and a 2 TB SSD. Those are published reference figures for that configuration, not a measured average for a particular encoder, resolution, or 24/7 workload. Apple’s Mac mini power-consumption specifications should not be treated as a streaming benchmark.

For a decision-grade estimate, measure wall draw during a representative stream with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and other software you intend to use. If you cannot measure it, show a range of plausible average-draw assumptions and label them as scenarios; do not present the 50 W CPU maximum as the expected average.
Calculate electricity and amortization separately
Use your actual run hours for the billing period and your electricity price per kilowatt-hour:
Electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × electricity price per kWh
For a 24/7 schedule, use the actual hours in the month you are estimating, rather than assuming every billing period has the same number of days. Then add the hardware cost spread over the useful life you choose:
Local monthly total = (measured average W ÷ 1,000 × monthly run hours × local $/kWh) + (hardware purchase price ÷ assumed useful-life months) + other incremental monthly costs
Enter the precise M2 configuration and its purchase price, including storage or peripherals you actually need. The amortization period is your assumption, not a fixed property of the Mac. Add internet, backup power, or cooling only if the stream creates an incremental cost for you.

Estimate the cloud-server cost without mixing unlike services
If the encoder requires macOS
AWS offers EC2 M2 Mac instances on 2023 Mac mini hardware with an M2 processor, 8 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, and 24 GiB of memory. AWS bills EC2 Mac by Dedicated Host, with a 24-hour minimum allocation; pricing varies by region and AWS directs customers to its pricing calculator. AWS EC2 Mac instance information and AWS EC2 Mac billing details are the relevant starting points. This is a dedicated-host offering, not a generic low-cost Linux VPS, so include the minimum allocation and the region-specific price for the hours you need.
If a generic operating system will work
Price the specific instance that can sustain your chosen encoder workload. Confirm that the encoder supports its operating system and that the machine has sufficient compute, storage, and network capacity. Include persistent storage, public IP or networking charges where applicable, data-transfer terms, and any restart or monitoring tools. A bare virtual machine is not comparable to a managed live-video service that also encodes, packages, and distributes video.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning page gives an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event with about 1,000 viewers using a 540p profile: approximately $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for distribution of 791 GB in US East (N. Put the alternatives into a worksheet
Use actual inputs for your situation. If any cloud charge is unknown, look it up for the selected provider, region, and billing arrangement rather than substituting a generic VM rate.

Compare totals for the same run schedule and the same job: an encoder feed sent to YouTube. If the cloud option is an AWS M2 Mac Dedicated Host, label its OS and minimum billing period; if it is a generic VM, confirm it can run the encoder reliably before using its price. There is no break-even duration that applies to everyone without the missing tariff, measured draw, hardware price and life, cloud configuration, and runtime.

Use YouTube settings that match the stream
The cost model only helps if the machine can deliver a stable ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval—not over 4 seconds. Its current settings table recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not requirements that every prerecorded video be streamed at those settings; choose the resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and ensure the sustained upstream connection can carry the selected bitrate. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring the encoder because platform guidance can change.

YouTube connects an encoder to the broadcast using its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current workflow, keep the stream key private, and test the actual playlist or recording—including audio and motion—before relying on an unattended broadcast. A bitrate that your home uplink or cloud network cannot sustain can cause dropped frames or a failed ingest regardless of the machine’s purchase price.
Choose based on compatibility, interruptions, and total cost
- An M2 Mac mini can make sense if you already own a suitable configuration, your encoder needs macOS, measured power and your tariff are acceptable, and you can handle local power, connectivity, restart, and maintenance needs.
- A cloud server can make sense if the encoder runs on the selected OS, its region-specific compute and networking costs work for your run schedule, and you prefer not to depend on a local machine. For AWS M2 Mac, the Dedicated Host model and 24-hour minimum matter to the calculation.
- Neither estimate is complete if it leaves out the Mac’s capital cost or cloud storage and network charges, or if it compares an encoder-only cloud instance with a managed service that delivers video to viewers.
Before committing, write down the stream schedule, encoder and OS, output settings, local measured draw or scenario range, local tariff, purchase price and amortization period, cloud region and billing terms, storage, transfer treatment, and recovery plan. Change one assumption at a time to see what drives your own break-even result.
