There is no universal cost winner. A used ThinkPad’s ongoing cost depends on its measured power draw and your electricity tariff; a cloud VM’s bill depends on its region, instance, storage, and network transfer. Compare both over the same period, include the laptop’s purchase cost, and account for the work of monitoring and restarting either setup.
What a fair comparison includes
Use the same time horizon for both options. The calculations below use 12 months as an example, not as a claim about typical ownership or billing. Substitute your own measured and quoted values.

Calculate the ThinkPad’s cost
Measure the laptop’s average wall-power draw while running the actual intended stream; a laptop specification or idle reading is not a substitute for a workload measurement. Then use:

Annual electricity cost = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 365 × local price per kWh.
For the full first-year comparison, add the used laptop’s purchase price. If you want to compare ongoing costs after buying it, show that figure separately rather than hiding the purchase cost. Add only incremental internet or cooling costs that apply to your setup. Any repair allowance is an estimate you choose, not an established cost or lifespan for ThinkPads.

Estimate the cloud VM bill
A VM’s advertised compute rate is not necessarily the full bill. For a 24/7 workload, estimate instance time for the full period and include storage, data transfer, public IP, and any other services or fees you select. The total depends on the provider, region, operating system, instance type, and workload.

Set the streaming workload before comparing costs
Cost alone does not tell you whether a computer or VM can encode and send the stream. First choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, and representative content you intend to run. YouTube’s current encoder settings recommend H.264 ingestion bitrates of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. YouTube also recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). These are stream-input recommendations, not proof that an unspecified ThinkPad or VM can encode the workload.
Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours and that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guide does not establish that an individual channel can or should keep one stream open indefinitely; plan the broadcast accordingly.

Compare the break-even point
Once you have a measured laptop draw, local tariff, laptop price, and a VM estimate with related charges, compare totals over the same 12-month example period. To find the electricity rate at which the options cost the same, subtract the ThinkPad’s purchase allocation and other chosen costs from the VM total, then divide the remainder by the ThinkPad’s annual kWh consumption. To find the break-even VM bill, calculate the ThinkPad’s total for the period and compare it with the VM’s full estimated bill. Keep the inputs visible: a change in tariff, instance, transfer volume, or purchase price can change the result.

- Encoding capability: Verify that the specific machine handles your chosen resolution and frame rate; YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate alone cannot establish that.
- Power and network: A laptop at home depends on local power and internet. A VM avoids dependence on your home connection, but still needs correctly configured software and provider services.
- Monitoring and recovery: Decide who notices a dropped stream and what must be restarted. No comparative reliability test establishes that either option is more reliable in general.
- Maintenance: A self-managed laptop or VM requires setup and ongoing attention. Include that practical burden in your decision even if you do not assign it a dollar value.
Where a managed streaming service fits
A managed encoding or playout service is a separate alternative, not simply another VM price. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API pricing describes managed encoding billed by active channel duration and input/output resolution. Compare its service-specific pricing and scope with your needs rather than treating it as general-purpose VM compute.
