Compare plans using the stream’s bitrate, the connection’s sustained upload performance, the data allowance and hotspot rules, and the full recurring and one-time costs. A continuous stream can use far more data than a typical phone hotspot allowance, so a low advertised mobile price may not reflect the cost of keeping it live.
Start with the stream’s data use
Bitrate determines how much data the video upload sends. YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health during a broadcast (YouTube encoder settings).

For 24 hours a day over 30 days, use 2,592,000 seconds. Convert the result to decimal GB or TB by dividing by 1,000,000,000 or 1,000,000,000,000 respectively. Add some allowance for protocol overhead and downtime assumptions; the calculation is an estimate, not an exact bill forecast. Actual transfer varies with bitrate, overhead, and stream uptime.
As one arithmetic example, StreamNeo’s 2026 guide estimates about 1.46 TB over 30 days at 4.5 Mbps. That is a vendor-published example, not a universal measurement or a prediction of your usage.

What the connection figures do—and do not—tell you
In its 2024 report, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission reported median mobile upload speed of 9.80 Mbps measured in April 2024. Its fixed-broadband median upload figure was 19.45 Mbps, measured in November 2021. Because these figures come from different dates, they are not a same-period head-to-head comparison, and neither predicts the speed available at your address.

A speed test is a snapshot; test from the encoder’s actual location and monitor stream health under representative conditions. A wired Ethernet connection between the encoder and router or gateway can avoid relying on Wi-Fi for that local link, but it does not raise the broadband service’s speed or remove its data limits.

Why mobile broadband’s advertised price can mislead
A phone plan that includes hotspot capability is not automatically suitable as 24/7 home broadband. The FCC’s 2024 report notes that smartphone hotspot use may require a more expensive plan or be limited in speed or data allowance. Check the plan’s broadband label and terms for the specific hotspot allowance, throttling, and overage rules.
The same report describes U.S. market context—not current quotes—as typical nationwide post-paid unlimited mobile plans costing $50 or more for the first line and prepaid plans costing $30 or more. “Unlimited” phone data does not establish that hotspot use is unlimited at the speed needed for a continuous stream.

For fixed broadband, the FCC’s 2024 report summarized that major providers commonly capped access near 1 TB and charged $10 for each additional 50 GB. Treat that as report-era context rather than a current offer: verify the terms of the specific plan available to you.
Compare local plans on equal terms
Use the same stream setting and billing period for both options. In the United States, broadband labels can help compare base price, introductory pricing, data, typical speeds, and additional terms. For either connection, include recurring charges and the costs that can change the total.
| What to compare | Fiber plan | Mobile broadband or phone hotspot |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring price | Price after promotions, plus applicable fees and required equipment | Price after promotions, plus applicable fees and required equipment |
| Upload capacity | Disclosed upload speed and a sustained test at the encoder location | Disclosed upload speed and a sustained test at the encoder location |
| Data terms | Included data, cap, and overage or throttling terms | Hotspot-specific allowance, whether separate from phone data, and overage or throttling terms |
| Setup and commitment | Installation, equipment, and contract costs | Gateway or phone costs, equipment, and contract costs |
| Real-world reliability | Usability during local congestion and brief outages | Usability at the installation location during peak use and brief outages |
Do not compare a promotional first-month price with another plan’s ongoing price, or compare different stream settings. A mobile plan’s lower base price may be outweighed by an inadequate hotspot allowance or a connection that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Fiber is not automatically cheaper either; the available plans, fees, and terms determine the result.
Calculate your likely monthly cost
- Choose the encoder setting. Record resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Use YouTube’s recommended settings as a starting point, then test representative content.
- Estimate monthly transfer. Apply the bitrate formula to the hours you expect to stream in the billing period, then allow for overhead and uptime variation.
- Check each plan’s actual terms. Record its ongoing price, introductory period, fees, required equipment, installation charge, data allowance, upload information, and any hotspot-specific limit.
- Test from the planned streaming setup. Measure sustained upload performance where the encoder will run and monitor stream health; do not rely on a plan’s download speed alone.
- Compare the all-in totals. Include overages, throttling or deprioritization risks, one-time setup costs, and what happens when a data allowance is exceeded.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are streaming uploaded video to YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fiber-versus-mobile connection at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.

Common decision mistakes
- Using download speed as the deciding number: a continuous live upload depends on sustained upload performance.
- Treating “unlimited” as unlimited hotspot data: verify whether hotspot use has separate limits, reduced speeds, or other restrictions.
- Assuming a data estimate is an invoice: bitrate, protocol overhead, uptime, billing periods, and plan rules affect actual usage and charges.
- Choosing on the introductory price alone: compare ongoing cost and include fees, required equipment, installation, and overages.
- Assuming a cable fixes the service: Ethernet can improve the local device-to-router connection, but cannot remove an ISP cap or solve insufficient broadband upload capacity.
