Core Web Vitals are three measures of how real visitors experience a page: loading, responsiveness, and visual stability. The current good targets are Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200 milliseconds, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1. Google recommends assessing these results at the 75th percentile, rather than treating one visit as representative of everyone.
What Core Web Vitals measure
Core Web Vitals are field metrics: they describe user experience using data from real visits, where devices, network conditions, and visitor behavior vary. The three metrics cover different problems, so a weak result in one is not interchangeable with a weak result in another.

| Metric | What it measures | Good target |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Loading performance: when the page’s main content has likely loaded. | Within 2.5 seconds |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Responsiveness: how quickly the page responds visually to user interactions. | Under 200 milliseconds |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Visual stability: unexpected movement of visible page content. | Under 0.1 |
These are Google’s current good thresholds, not a promise that every visit will meet them. Google Search Central’s guidance gives the targets at Core Web Vitals; web.dev explains how to assess them using real-user data at Web Vitals.

LCP tracks when the largest visible content element has rendered, making it a useful indicator of when the main content appears ready. A page can feel slow even if smaller elements load quickly, so LCP focuses attention on the prominent content visitors came to see.

INP: responsiveness
INP reflects the delay between a user interaction—such as a tap, click, or keypress—and the next visual update. It became a Core Web Vital on March 12, 2024, replacing First Input Delay (FID). FID is historical context; INP is the responsiveness metric to use when discussing the current set.
CLS: visual stability
CLS captures unexpected movement of visible page content. A page may shift as elements load, causing someone to lose their place or accidentally select the wrong control. CLS is about unexpected layout shifts, not simply whether a page changes during use.
How to read the thresholds and percentile
Google recommends judging Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile of page loads. In practical terms, that means looking at the experience of most visits while allowing that a minority may be slower or less stable. It is not an average, and a single fast test does not establish that visitors generally have a good experience.
Where reporting allows it, separate mobile and desktop results. The same page can behave differently across devices and network conditions. For useful comparisons over time, keep the page or page group and device category consistent; that is a way to make the data easier to interpret, not a separate Google ranking rule.
Where marketers can check Core Web Vitals
Google identifies several reporting and diagnostic options: the Search Console Core Web Vitals report, PageSpeed Insights, Chrome DevTools, and the web-vitals JavaScript library. For marketers, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are often the clearest starting points: the first helps identify patterns across a site, while the second can show both real-user data and a diagnostic test.
Use Search Console to find affected page groups
The Search Console Core Web Vitals report groups pages by status and metric, making it useful for spotting issues that affect more than one URL. Treat the report as a way to find patterns and prioritize investigation; it does not explain every cause on an individual page.

Use PageSpeed Insights to distinguish field data from diagnostics
PageSpeed Insights reports Lighthouse lab diagnostics and Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX) field data when enough real-user data is available. Its field data can be page-level or origin-level. When a page does not have enough samples, PageSpeed Insights may show origin-level data instead; there may also be too little data to assess the page.

Lab results are useful for diagnosing a controlled test, but they do not replace field data from real visits. As web.dev puts it, “While lab measurement is an essential part of delivering great experiences, it is not a substitute for field measurement.”
Use browser and code tools when the team needs deeper investigation
Chrome DevTools can help developers inspect performance locally, and the web-vitals JavaScript library can measure metrics in a site’s own instrumentation. These options are most useful when a team needs to investigate behavior beyond what summary reports show. Google’s overview of measurement options is in its Core Web Vitals documentation.
How to turn results into a useful team conversation
Core Web Vitals can help marketers and developers agree on which user-experience problem to investigate, but the metric alone does not identify its cause. Keep the conversation concrete: name the affected metric, specify whether the evidence is field or lab data, and confirm whether it applies to a page or the broader origin and to mobile or desktop.
- If LCP is weak: frame the issue as slow loading of prominent content, then ask the technical team to investigate what is delaying that content.
- If INP is weak: describe a responsiveness problem after interactions, rather than calling the page simply “slow.”
- If CLS is weak: identify unexpected movement as the experience issue, especially where it disrupts reading or selecting controls.
- If the sources disagree: compare the field report with the lab test without treating either as a substitute for the other; the two describe different conditions.
For monitoring across a site, web performance reporting tools can help teams track real-user outcomes and trends. The official options above are sufficient to get started; a paid product is not required by Google’s guidance.
What Core Web Vitals mean for Google Search
Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but passing a report does not guarantee a ranking increase or a top position. Google also says there is no single page-experience signal: its systems seek relevant content, and page experience includes other considerations such as security, mobile usability, intrusive interstitials, and distracting ads. Google says its core ranking systems generally evaluate page experience at the page level, while some assessments are site-wide.
Best Value
As Google Search Central states in Understanding Google Page Experience: “Keep in mind that getting good results in reports like Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report or third-party tools doesn’t guarantee that your pages will rank at the top of Google Search results.” A responsible team description is that the metrics are part of Google’s page-experience considerations and a practical way to identify user-experience problems—not a standalone SEO score or ranking promise.
A note on older LCP statistics
A historical web.dev analysis of CrUX data from April 2020 found that 42% of phone origins and 51% of desktop origins met the candidate 2.5-second LCP threshold used in selecting that target. These are historical threshold-selection figures, not current estimates of the share of sites that pass LCP.
