Cordless vs. Corded Soldering Irons: Which Is Better for Your Projects?

A corded station suits repeated bench work; a cordless butane iron is useful where mobility matters. Compare task demands, control, runtime, and setup.

For repeated work at a fixed electronics bench with mains power, a corded temperature-controlled station is usually the more practical choice. For repairs away from a bench—or wherever a cable would obstruct the work—a cordless butane iron offers useful mobility. The right choice depends on your work location, joint size and thermal demands, preferred temperature control, and willingness to manage fuel; neither type is universally better.

Compare the two types at a glance

Consideration Cordless butane iron Corded station
Where it fits Useful away from a mains outlet or where a cable gets in the way. Well suited to a stable bench with mains power and room for the station and holder.
Power source Butane; refill compatibility and model-specific runtime matter. Mains-powered station connected to a separate handpiece.
Temperature and functions Depend on the model and operating mode. Torch or hot-air temperatures are not soldering-tip temperatures. Can offer adjustable settings and a specified handpiece; the HAKKO FX-888DX is one example.
Ongoing needs Compatible fuel and replacement tips. Suitable tips and bench space for the station and holder.
Typical fit Occasional field repair or work where mobility takes priority. Repeated bench work where adjustable temperature and a stable setup matter.

These are task-based recommendations based on product formats and specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test.

Choose based on your work

Choose cordless when the work moves

A butane iron can be useful for a repair in a location without convenient mains power or where a cord makes positioning difficult. It trades the station-and-cable setup for fuel management: you need a compatible refill, and the stated runtime belongs to the specific model, not to cordless irons as a category.

For example, Weller describes the WLBU75 as a 25–75 W butane-powered tool and lists up to 60 minutes of continuous operation, replaceable tips, and electronics and PCB work among its applications. That is Weller’s claim for this product, not a runtime guarantee for other irons. See the Weller WLBU75 product page.

It can be powered by a charger or mobile power supply with a Type-C port.
  • Intelligent Gravity Sensing: After stopping working for 30 seconds, the soldering iron will enter sleep mode. T1 MAX will automatically restart to heat up to the temperature you set when picking it up again. NOTE: The red light flashes while heating, and the green light stays on when heating is complete.
  • 6 Temperature Levels: The tail knob of the soldering iron has 6 levels for adjusting the temperature. Can be adjusted accurately and efficiently for different work scenes in the range between 390°F to 840°F (200°C to 450°C) so as not to damage heat-resistant components.
  • Compact Structural with Stability: Equipped with an aluminum storage stand, the base tray can be pressed to pop up to store the welding head. The exquisite industrial design allows the soldering iron to be displayed on the table like an aesthetic piece, keeping the workbench clean, beautiful, comfortable, and pleasant.

Choose a station for regular bench work

A corded station makes sense when your work area is stable and mains power is available. A station can provide adjustable temperature settings, a separate handpiece, and a holder as part of the setup. Those features can be more useful for repeatable bench work than comparing wattage figures alone.

The HAKKO FX-888DX illustrates this format. HAKKO lists a 50–480°C setting range, a 65 W (26 V) handpiece, and a 1.2 m cord. Its stated temperature stability is ±1°C at idle under the manufacturer’s specified 200–480°C setting condition; that figure describes that condition, not every soldering situation. The listed package includes the station, FX-8801 handpiece, iron holder with cleaning sponge and wire, and instruction manual. Check HAKKO’s FX-888DX specifications and package listing.

Match temperature and power to the job

Do not assume that a higher wattage figure alone tells you which iron will perform better. Joint size, the tip, the tool’s design, and the job’s thermal demands all matter; the available product specifications do not establish a universal wattage-to-performance comparison across designs. Compare the maker’s soldering-mode temperature information, the available tips, and the handpiece or tool specifications for the work you actually do.

Mode labels matter on multi-function butane tools. Weller lists the Pyropen Cordless Std at approximately three hours of operation per filling, with separate approximate ranges for soldering (200–500°C), hot air (up to 650°C), and torch mode (up to 1300°C). The hotter hot-air and torch figures are not soldering-tip temperatures, and this runtime applies to that Pyropen model—not the WLBU75 or cordless irons generally. See Weller’s Pyropen Cordless Std page.

  • Comes with full accessories - metal stand, 15cm aluminum desoldering pump, 2 soft spare pump nozzles, 10 high-temperature cleaning sponges and 3 C210 soldering tips. Ideal for portable indoor and outdoor electronic maintenance and DIY projects.

For heavier bench work, HAKKO says the FX-888DX can accept an optional 95 W soldering iron for “heavy loaded soldering” and names compatible handpieces on its FX-888DX features page. Treat that as a model-specific option, not evidence that every corded station outperforms every cordless iron.

Check ownership and fit before choosing

  • Work location: Decide whether the job is tied to a bench or benefits from moving freely without a power cord.
  • Operating time: For a butane model, check its own stated runtime and refill process; do not transfer another model’s figure.
  • Temperature control: Check the soldering-mode range and any stated conditions for stability. Separate hot-air and torch settings from soldering settings.
  • Tips and fuel: Confirm that suitable replacement tips are available and, for a butane model, that you can obtain compatible fuel. Compatibility is model-specific.
  • Setup and package: Check whether a holder and the accessories you need are included, and allow room for a station if choosing a corded setup.
  • Region and availability: Confirm the product’s regional voltage and current availability before buying; package contents can also differ by listing.

Verdict: pick the format that fits the worksite

For a permanent, mains-powered bench and repeated soldering, start with a corded temperature-controlled station such as the HAKKO FX-888DX. For work away from that setup or where the cable is a hindrance, consider a cordless butane model such as the Weller WLBU75, while treating its fuel needs and runtime as model-specific. These are examples to compare against your task, not independently tested winners.
