Some cordless drills add useful capabilities beyond basic drilling and fastening: a brushless motor, an adjustable clutch, and either hammer action or a separate bind-response feature. These features are available on the specific models below, but the available product information does not establish that all inexpensive drills lack them—or define a price cutoff separating “cheap” from other drills.
What these features do—and what they do not prove
The examples here come from different voltage platforms and product configurations, so they illustrate features rather than provide a head-to-head performance test. Manufacturer claims and specifications are identified as such; they are not independent test results. When comparing actual listings, check the job, chuck size, battery platform, kit contents, handling features, and control options rather than judging by voltage or clutch-setting count alone.

1. Brushless motor: efficiency claims to evaluate
A brushless motor is one feature worth checking if runtime and motor design matter to your work. DEWALT describes the DCD706F2’s brushless motor as providing efficient performance and runtime. Milwaukee says the brushless motor in its 2902-20 is optimized for efficiency and delivers more runtime and longer life than a brushed motor. These are the manufacturers’ stated benefits, not independently measured comparisons.
The DEWALT DCD706F2 is a 12V MAX brushless 3/8-inch hammer drill kit. DEWALT lists a two-speed transmission, a ratcheting chuck, an LED foot light, a 6.6-inch front-to-back length, and 250 UWO on its product page. These specifications describe that model; they do not establish how it compares with every lower-cost drill.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight design fits into tight areas
- High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
- High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
- 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control
Milwaukee’s 2902-20 is an M18 brushless hammer drill. Its product page lists a 1/2-inch all-metal ratcheting chuck, two speed settings, an included side handle, and maximum torque of 725 in-lbs. Milwaukee’s figure is a manufacturer specification, not a comparative test result.
2. Adjustable clutch: more control when fastening
A clutch setting lets you select a fastening torque range, helping reduce the risk of driving a fastener too far into a workpiece. It is useful to have control suited to the material and fastener; a larger setting count by itself does not establish better quality or a universal performance threshold.

| Model | Clutch specification | Other relevant details |
|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DCD706F2 | 15 clutch settings | 12V MAX; 3/8-inch chuck; two-speed transmission |
| Milwaukee 2902-20 | 18 clutch settings | M18; 1/2-inch chuck; two speed settings; side handle included |
| Makita GPH01Z | Electronic digital clutch: 41 settings in low speed and 21 in high speed | 40V max XGT; 1/2-inch hammer driver-drill |
These counts are model-specific manufacturer specifications: see the DEWALT, Milwaukee, and Makita product pages. Clutch designs and counts differ, so compare how the control suits your fastening tasks instead of treating the number as a standalone quality score.

3. Beyond ordinary drilling: hammer action or bind response
Hammer action for masonry drilling
A hammer-drill mode adds percussive action while drilling, a feature intended for masonry work. Makita explicitly describes the GPH01Z’s hammer mode for masonry. A hammer drill is not automatically the right tool for every concrete job; match the drill and bit to the material and workload.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Bind response is a different feature
Makita also lists Active Feedback-sensing Technology (AFT) for the GPH01Z. The company says AFT turns off the motor if rotation of the accessory is suddenly forced to stop. That is a response to a sudden bind or stop event, not the percussive action used for masonry drilling. Do not treat hammer mode and bind response as interchangeable features.
Makita lists the GPH01Z as a 40V max XGT brushless 1/2-inch hammer driver-drill with an electronic digital clutch and maximum torque of 1,250 in-lbs. The company also claims up to 35% faster drilling speed versus its specified XPH07 18V model. Both figures are manufacturer statements on the GPH01Z product page; the speed claim is a comparison with that named Makita model, not an independent or general result.

How to compare drills for your work
- Task: Decide whether you mainly need fastening, wood or metal drilling, or masonry drilling. Hammer action is relevant to masonry; a bind-response feature addresses a different event.
- Control: Check clutch design and range, speed settings, and trigger control against the fasteners and materials you use.
- Handling: Consider size, weight, chuck capacity, and whether a side handle is included or useful for the work.
- Ownership: Confirm the battery platform and whether the listing includes a battery and charger. The examples span different platforms and kit configurations, so do not assume batteries or included accessories are interchangeable.
- Evidence: Treat manufacturer specifications and claimed benefits as product information, not independent comparative test results.
