“Copy between windows” in Windows usually means copying selected content in one app and pasting it into another. Select the text or other supported content, press Ctrl+C, switch to the destination window, click where the content should go, and press Ctrl+V. Windows temporarily holds the copied item on the clipboard.

What does “copy between windows” mean?

It is the ordinary copy-and-paste workflow between two application windows on the same Windows PC. You copy a selection from the source window; Windows places it on the clipboard; then you paste it into the destination window. Microsoft explains that copied content is automatically placed on the clipboard for pasting in its Windows clipboard documentation.

In the basic workflow, the clipboard holds the most recently copied selection. Copying something else replaces that item. Copying and pasting does not mean transferring the entire visible window; for that, use a screenshot method.

How to copy and paste between two app windows

  1. In the source window, select the text, image, or other content the app supports copying.
  2. Press Ctrl+C.
  3. Switch to the destination window and click the insertion point or location where the content belongs.
  4. Press Ctrl+V.

The result depends on what the destination app accepts. If the content does not paste as expected, check that the selection was copied and that the destination supports that content type.

Which copy method fits your task?

Method What it keeps Where you can paste
Basic clipboard The latest copied selection Another compatible app on the same PC
Windows clipboard history Up to 25 copied entries; each item is limited to 4 MB, according to Microsoft Compatible apps on the same PC; syncing to another device is a separate optional feature
Office Clipboard Up to 24 copied items, according to Microsoft Another Office document
Active-window screenshot An image of the active window An app that accepts pasted images

Use Windows clipboard history for more than one copied item

Windows clipboard history lets you retrieve earlier copied items instead of relying only on the latest one. After enabling the feature, press Windows+V to open its history and choose an item to paste. Microsoft lists a limit of 25 entries and 4 MB per item, with support for formats including text, HTML, and bitmap. Older entries are removed as space is needed unless pinned, and history is cleared on restart except for pinned items. See Microsoft’s clipboard instructions for the setting and details. These documentation limits are not a guarantee that every app or content type will behave identically.

Use Office Clipboard to collect items for Office documents

Office has its own Clipboard task pane, distinct from Windows clipboard history. Microsoft says it can collect up to 24 items copied from Office documents or other programs and paste them into another Office document. Consult Microsoft’s Office Clipboard instructions for how to open and use the pane.

Copy a window as an image instead of copying its contents

To capture the visible contents of one active window, make that window active and press Alt+Print Screen. Then switch to the receiving app and press Ctrl+V to paste the captured image. This copies a picture of the window, not editable text or the underlying file. Microsoft’s screenshot instructions describe this shortcut.

Copying between windows is not the same as syncing between devices

Copying from one app window to another on the same PC uses the local clipboard. Windows can also sync clipboard items across devices, but that requires enabling clipboard sync and using the same Microsoft or work account on the devices. It is an optional, separate workflow—not a requirement for copying between two windows. Microsoft’s clipboard documentation covers the feature. Its instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, so Windows 11 is the relevant current version for these directions.
