Copper vs. Fiber Optics for Data Center Connections: How to Choose

Copper DAC can suit compatible short in-rack links; fiber can serve longer reaches and reduce cable diameter. Compare the exact PHY, ports, power and installation needs.

Neither copper nor fiber is the best choice for every data center connection. For a compatible short link inside a rack, passive direct-attach copper (DAC) can be a practical, low-cost option. Fiber is suited to longer reaches and, in the cited comparison, has a smaller cable diameter—but requires compatible optical interfaces and careful handling. Choose by matching the exact link’s PHY, speed, reach, endpoint ports, total cost, power needs and installation constraints.

What separates copper and fiber in a data center?

Copper and fiber are families of physical media, not single performance tiers. Ethernet PHY standards define operation over different media, and their supported speeds and distances vary. For example, the IEEE describes 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s optical interfaces over single-mode fiber for reaches up to 10 km. That is a capability of specified optical PHYs, not a universal comparison against every copper link. Check the PHY specification for the speed and reach you need. IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group

Passive DAC uses a copper twinax cable assembly between compatible ports, avoiding separate optical conversion in the cable assembly. Fiber links use optical interfaces; depending on the design, those may be separate transceivers or part of an active optical cable. The choice is therefore about the complete link and its endpoints, not just the cable material.

When does copper make sense?

Short, compatible connections within a rack

Passive DAC is a reasonable candidate when two devices have compatible ports, the required reach is short, and the cable can be routed comfortably. NVIDIA describes copper cables as mainly used within a rack because of their short reach in its InfiniBand cabling guide. In that guide’s HDR InfiniBand example, the maximum passive-copper length is 2 m, and the passive cable requires no port power. Those figures apply to that example, not to copper links generally. What to verify before choosing DAC

  • Confirm the device port form factor, protocol, data rate and vendor compatibility for the exact cable.
  • Check the supported cable length for the specific cable and link standard; do not assume the HDR example’s 2 m figure applies elsewhere.
  • Include cable routing and connector access in the rack layout. A short link is useful only if it reaches cleanly without obstructing service.

Passive DAC may avoid the optical modules used in some fiber configurations, but that does not establish a universal cost or energy saving. Compare the actual cable, ports and system configuration.

When does fiber make sense?

Longer reach or tighter cable routing

Fiber can support reaches beyond the copper assemblies discussed in NVIDIA’s guide, and it has a smaller diameter in that comparison. Those traits can be useful when connections extend beyond a rack or cable volume is a constraint. They do not mean every fiber link is longer or thinner than every copper option: compare the specific cable assemblies and supported PHYs.

Optical interfaces and power

Fiber requires optical interfaces compatible with the devices and link standard. In its HDR examples, NVIDIA lists up to 5 W of port power for two cited optical transceiver models. That is model-specific information, not a general power figure for fiber; check the current specification for the exact transceiver and port. NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD HDR cabling guide

Handling and maintenance

Respect the cable’s specified bend radius and provide strain relief: tight bends can degrade the optical signal. Fiber terminations also need appropriate cleaning and inspection. Fluke Networks identifies both as critical steps for data-center fiber connections. Match cleaning and inspection tools to the connector and equipment; the need for a particular kit depends on the installation. Fluke Networks: Fiber-optic cable cleaning and inspection

Compare the complete link before deciding

Use the exact PHY and endpoint combination to compare realistic options. A cable’s headline reach or price is not enough if the ports are incompatible, the installation is difficult, or the link needs extra modules.

Decision factor Questions to answer
PHY, speed and reach What data rate and distance does the exact PHY support over this medium?
Endpoint compatibility Do both devices support the cable or optical modules, form factor and protocol?
Total system cost What do the cable, required transceivers, port requirements and installation add up to?
Power What power do the relevant ports or optical modules use in this configuration?
Density and routing Will cable diameter, bend radius, route length or connector access affect rack layout?
Service and maintenance What connector, patch-panel, inspection, cleaning and replacement work will the design require?

The cited sources do not establish a neutral, current, like-for-like cost or power winner for equivalent data center links. Vendor calculations depend on architecture and configuration. A practical selection sequence

  1. Identify the link. Record the protocol, target data rate, distance and the PHY supported at both endpoints.
  2. Check compatible options. Confirm exact port types, cable or transceiver compatibility, and supported reach in the relevant specifications.
  3. Assess the route. Consider rack boundaries, cable diameter, bend radius, connector access and any patch-panel requirements.
  4. Compare whole-link requirements. Include cable and optics costs, port or module power, and installation and maintenance work.
  5. Select the option that meets the requirements. For a short compatible in-rack connection, consider passive DAC; where reach or cable diameter favors it, consider fiber with compatible optics and an installation plan.

What to verify before ordering or installing

  • Use the currently adopted PHY specification and the exact endpoint and cable documentation; standards and product specifications can change.
  • Keep protocol-specific figures in context. NVIDIA’s 2 m passive-copper example and transceiver power figures are HDR InfiniBand guidance, not general Ethernet or copper/fiber limits.
  • For fiber, follow the cable’s bend-radius and strain-relief requirements and use connector cleaning and inspection procedures appropriate to the equipment.
