In one hands-on comparison, Copilot felt better for quick, clearly defined edits in Word, while ChatGPT was more useful when the request was open-ended. That is one reviewer’s experience—not a controlled test or a general ranking. The practical choice depends on how specific your task is, what document context you need, and which tool your account and organization allow you to use.
What the Word comparison found
TechRadar contributor Eric Hal Schwartz tested both assistants by asking each to make a reusable vacation-planning template from a blank Word document. His results favored different tools for different kinds of work.

ChatGPT: a looser, more flexible template
Schwartz said ChatGPT included travel and accommodation details, reservation deadlines, estimated travel times, priority activities, backup plans, and ideas that were not yet committed to the itinerary. He found its structure less rigid, which suited a request with room for interpretation.

Copilot produced sections for transportation, accommodation, daily plans, activities, dining, and packing. Schwartz described the result as clean and immediately usable, and said individual sections were easy to tweak and reorganize.
#1 Best Overall
His broader takeaway was that Copilot suited a known, specific edit, while ChatGPT suited a fuzzier request where conversational flexibility mattered. As he put it: “But I would tend to pull up Copilot only when I already knew what I wanted it to do.” This is a qualitative account from one reviewer, not evidence of a universal advantage or a standardized comparison of accuracy or productivity. How the assistants work in Word
ChatGPT for Word
OpenAI describes its Word add-in as a sidebar for working with the open document. You can ask about the document, revise selected text, or turn notes into a draft. Documented uses include drafting, summarizing, revising for an audience, reorganizing headings and formatting, and checking for unclear wording or inconsistent terminology. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Word guide says the add-in is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, subject to plan limits.

- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
To use it, install the add-in through Microsoft Marketplace, open it from Word’s ribbon, and sign in. Organization administrators can control access, and Microsoft 365 administrators must also allow the add-in. Its conversations are separate from regular ChatGPT conversation history; ChatGPT memory and skills do not carry over. It can work with the open document but cannot reference other files stored on your computer, so paste relevant material into the prompt when needed.

Copilot in Word
Microsoft describes Copilot in Word as a tool to create, refine, understand, and collaborate on documents. Its documented workflows include drafting from prompts, notes, outlines, or referenced files; rewriting selected passages; summarizing or asking questions about a document; and reviewing proposed edits before accepting them. Where the feature is available and enabled, Copilot may draw on relevant files, emails, and meetings in the user’s Microsoft 365 context. Microsoft’s Copilot in Word guide explains its workflows and availability.
Microsoft says Copilot’s availability depends on subscription or license, organization settings, platform, and language. It also limits how many words it can process per prompt. Microsoft warns that Copilot can misinterpret facts or produce inaccurate or inappropriate content, so proposed output needs review. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Word FAQ.

Which one should you use?
| What matters for this task | ChatGPT for Word | Copilot in Word |
|---|---|---|
| Task is clearly defined | Can revise selected text or make other document changes; the comparison reviewer preferred it less for quick, specific edits. | The reviewer preferred it for a specific change when he knew what he wanted. |
| Task is open-ended | The reviewer preferred its flexibility for a less-defined request. | Can draft from prompts, notes, or outlines; the reviewer found its template more conventional. |
| Editing the document directly | Works in a sidebar and can revise selected text; complex formatting may need manual cleanup. | Supports in-place rewriting and review of proposed changes, including controls to replace or insert content. |
| Using context beyond the open document | Cannot reference other local computer files automatically; paste relevant text into the prompt. | May use relevant Microsoft 365 files, emails, and meetings when enabled and available. |
| Access | Documented for all ChatGPT plans, including Free, subject to plan limits and administrator controls. | Depends on Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license, organization settings, platform, and language. |
| Reviewing output | OpenAI warns of mistakes and unwanted changes; verify important facts and edits. | Microsoft warns of mistakes and inaccurate or inappropriate content; review suggestions before relying on them. |
For a targeted rewrite or mechanical change, try Copilot’s Word controls if they are available in your account. For a prompt that is still taking shape—such as turning loose planning notes into a flexible structure—ChatGPT may fit better. That distinction reflects Schwartz’s experience, not a guarantee about how either tool will handle your own document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to check before accepting AI edits
- Check the wording and facts. Both vendors warn that generated content can be wrong; compare edits with the original and verify important details.
- Review what changed. Copilot can present edits for review, while ChatGPT may change content you intended to keep.
- Inspect formatting. ChatGPT’s complex tables, charts, or formatting can need manual adjustment.
- Account for context limits. ChatGPT for Word uses the open document rather than other local files; Copilot’s access to Microsoft 365 context depends on availability and settings, and its prompts have a word-processing limit.
