To place the Copilot app beside another window in Windows 11, open Copilot and use Windows Snap. To remove it from that arrangement, restore or reposition its window with standard Windows controls; Microsoft does not document a Copilot-specific undock command. If you mean the Copilot button inside Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, that control has a separate Dock command.
First, identify which Copilot you mean
“Dock Copilot” can refer to different interfaces. The current Copilot app is a Windows desktop window, so you arrange it with Snap. In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, the Copilot Dynamic Action Button is a small control with its own Dock option. A right-side Copilot sidebar also appeared in a Windows 11 preview in 2023, but that historical description does not establish how every current version behaves.

| Interface | What you move | How to arrange it |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot app in Windows | The app window | Use Windows Snap, then standard window controls to restore or reposition it. |
| Copilot Dynamic Action Button in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint | A button within an Office document | Use the button’s Dock command or drag it to the side of document content. |
| Copilot in Windows 11 version 22H2 preview | A right-side sidebar, as described in Microsoft’s September 26, 2023 release note | This is a dated preview description, not current general instructions. |
How to snap the Copilot app beside another window
Open Copilot
- Launch Copilot from its taskbar icon or Start menu. On a new Windows 11 PC, it may already be installed and pinned. If it is not installed, Microsoft directs users to the Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s Copilot access instructions describe these options.
- You can also open Copilot with the Copilot keyboard key or Windows+C. In Copilot, go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts to choose whether the shortcut opens the full app or the smaller quick view. The shortcut opens Copilot; it does not dock the window.
Arrange it with Snap
- With Copilot open, use Windows Snap to place its window at the left or right edge of the screen, or select an available Snap layout.
- Use the mouse or keyboard Snap controls built into Windows. The available layouts can vary with display size. For Microsoft’s instructions, see Snap your windows.
Snap is a Windows window-arrangement feature, not a Copilot setting. It places Copilot alongside other open windows rather than turning the app into a permanent sidebar.

How to undock or move the app window
To take Copilot out of a snapped layout, use ordinary Windows window controls to restore the window or reposition it. Microsoft’s Snap instructions explain arranging windows but do not specify a Copilot-only “undock” command. The exact control you use depends on how you snapped the window and your Windows setup.

If you meant the Copilot button in an Office document
The Copilot Dynamic Action Button in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is a separate feature from the Windows app. To dock the button, right-click it and choose Dock, or drag it to the side of the document content. Select the smaller docked icon or drag the button back into the document canvas to re-engage it. Microsoft says the docked state lasts for the working session. See Microsoft’s instructions for the Copilot Dynamic Action Button.
If you only want to remove the taskbar icon
Unpinning Copilot removes its taskbar shortcut; it does not undock or move an open Copilot window. To remove the shortcut, right-click the pinned icon and choose Unpin from taskbar. Microsoft’s taskbar customization instructions cover pinning and unpinning apps.

Why older instructions may show a Copilot sidebar
Microsoft’s September 26, 2023 release note for Windows 11 version 22H2 described the Copilot preview as a bar on the right side of the screen that would not overlap desktop content or block open app windows. That statement refers to that preview and version; it should not be taken as confirmation that the current Copilot app has the same sidebar behavior. See Microsoft’s September 26, 2023 Windows configuration update.
