Coolify vs Dokploy: Which Self-Hosted PaaS Is Better?

Coolify is the safer default for most small Docker Compose deployments; Dokploy wins when Swarm, broader integrations, volume backups, alerts, previews, or advanced permissions are decisive.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most solo developers and small teams deploying Docker Compose to one or a few servers, Coolify is the safer default. Its self-hosted edition is free with full feature access, follows a straightforward control-plane model, and keeps the platform cost at zero. Dokploy is the stronger choice when native Docker Swarm clustering, wider Git and build integrations, built-in monitoring and alerts, arbitrary Docker-volume backups, preview deployments, or more structured team controls are requirements.

This is a workflow recommendation, not a performance benchmark. The vendors’ published material does not provide a controlled test comparing CPU use, deployment speed, memory consumption, uptime, or stability. Your infrastructure, application architecture, and operating practices will matter more than a theoretical platform winner.

What Coolify and Dokploy actually do

Coolify and Dokploy are self-hosted platform-as-a-service (PaaS) products. Each puts a web control plane over Docker-based application and database deployments on servers that you provide. Instead of hand-writing every deployment, reverse-proxy, environment-variable, and restart operation, you register a server, define a resource, and let the platform coordinate Docker and Traefik.

The control plane is not the same thing as your application infrastructure. Your containers, databases, persistent files, secrets, operating system, SSH access, firewall, DNS, and workload backups still live on infrastructure you select and secure. A cloud edition can host the control plane for you, but it does not turn either product into a provider of application servers.

Dokploy’s comparison lists both products with user interfaces, Docker Compose, APIs and CLIs, multi-node support, Traefik integration, databases, monitoring, backups, rollbacks, environments, scheduled jobs, and teams. The practical differences appear in how deeply each product covers source control, build systems, clustering, operations, and governance.

Update responsibility Self-hosted updates can be automated or self-managed; Cloud updates are handled by the service Self-hosted updates are manual; Cloud updates are automatic Cloud mainly transfers control-plane maintenance, not workload operations.

How the deployment workflow differs

Docker Compose and Docker-first projects

Both products are comfortable with Docker Compose, Docker images, databases, scheduled jobs, environments, rollbacks, and Traefik-based ingress. If your project already has a tested docker-compose.yml, either platform can provide a more repeatable path than logging into a server and running Compose by hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolify is the natural starting point for a Compose-oriented solo project because its free self-hosted edition exposes all features and its workflow is deliberately centered on connecting your own servers and deploying resources there. Dokploy can run the same style of workload, but its additional value appears when you need the wider integration and governance features described below.

Git providers and repository workflows

Dokploy’s published comparison names GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Gitea, along with a Docker and generic build workflow. Coolify’s table names GitHub and Git Generic. That distinction matters if your organization mandates GitLab, Bitbucket, or a self-hosted Gitea instance: Dokploy has an explicitly documented integration for each, while Coolify’s listed options may require using a generic Git path.

Before choosing, map every repository that must deploy automatically. Check whether it is hosted on one of the named providers, whether webhooks are permitted, and whether your compliance rules allow a generic Git credential. The platform cannot remove authentication, branch-protection, or secret-management requirements imposed by your source-control system.

Buildpacks, Nixpacks, and custom build servers

Coolify lists Docker, Docker Compose, and Nixpacks. Dokploy lists those inputs plus Heroku Buildpacks, Paketo Buildpacks, and Railpack, and its comparison highlights custom build servers. A team with a standardized buildpack pipeline therefore has more documented choices in Dokploy.

Build-system breadth is not automatically an advantage for a Compose-only deployment. Extra builders introduce more images, caches, credentials, and patching responsibilities. Select the smallest build surface that matches your applications, and keep a Dockerfile or Compose fallback for workloads that need deterministic, reviewable builds.

Topology: one VPS, several servers, or a Swarm cluster

One server or a few remote servers

Both products can manage resources on customer-provided servers and list multi-node support. This is the common VPS scenario: one machine for a personal project, or a small set of machines split by workload, region, or risk. You still size the host, configure SSH and firewall rules, allocate storage, and decide how traffic and DNS reach the containers.

For this topology, the deciding factors are usually platform cost, source-control compatibility, backup coverage, and how much operational UI your team wants. Coolify’s free, full-feature self-hosted edition makes it the simpler default when those needs are modest. Dokploy becomes more compelling when the additional integrations or controls remove manual work that your team would otherwise have to build.

Docker Swarm clustering

Dokploy’s comparison specifically lists Docker Swarm clustering, while Coolify is marked as limited for Swarm. If your architecture depends on Swarm services, replicated managers or workers, or Swarm-native scheduling, treat Dokploy as the clear candidate and validate the exact supported topology in its current documentation before migration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not select Swarm merely because a platform lists it. A cluster adds manager quorum, node-drain procedures, overlay networking, certificate rotation, storage placement, and failure-recovery tasks. If you only need to deploy Compose files to one or two independent servers, a Swarm cluster may add more operational surface than value.

Traefik and ingress

Both platforms list Traefik integration. That gives you a common reverse-proxy layer for routing domains to containers and handling the edge of the deployment. It does not eliminate the need to manage DNS records, certificates, firewall exposure, HTTP headers, or application-level authentication. Plan which ports are public, which services remain private, and how an ingress change is rolled back before putting production traffic behind the control plane.

Operations: monitoring, backups, and recovery

Monitoring and alerts

Both comparison entries include monitoring, but Dokploy specifically highlights CPU, RAM, and disk monitoring with automated alerts. That explicit signal is useful for a small team that wants threshold notifications without assembling a separate monitoring stack.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Metrics are not a recovery plan. Decide where alerts go, who acknowledges them, and what action follows a full disk, exhausted memory, failed deployment, or unreachable node. Test an alert by creating a safe threshold in a non-production environment, and document the escalation path. The published material does not establish comparative alert latency, metric retention, or resource overhead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Database backups

Both products list database backups. A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Define retention, encryption, destination, and recovery-point objectives outside the platform’s default settings. Perform a restore to an isolated server, verify application connectivity, and record the exact version and credentials needed to repeat the procedure.

Docker-volume backups

Dokploy’s comparison highlights backups for arbitrary Docker volumes. This is important for services that keep state in volumes rather than in a database: uploaded media, search indexes, queues, or application-specific files. Coolify’s comparison lists backups but does not make the same arbitrary-volume emphasis in the supplied feature table. If volume-level protection is a hard requirement, confirm the supported volume types, destinations, scheduling, encryption, and restore workflow in Dokploy’s current documentation before committing.

Rollbacks and updates

Both platforms list rollbacks. A rollback should cover the image or build artifact as well as configuration, migrations, and persistent data. A previous container image cannot safely undo a database migration that changed the schema. Keep migration steps reversible where possible and rehearse a rollback with a disposable environment.

Control-plane updates are a separate concern. With self-hosted Coolify, the operator installs, updates, monitors, backs up, and restores the Coolify instance; updates may be automated or self-managed. Dokploy’s self-hosted updates are manual. A managed Cloud edition handles updates to the control plane, but your workload images, operating system patches, secrets, data, and network controls remain yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Team controls, environments, and preview deployments

Both products list teams and environments. Dokploy’s comparison additionally highlights advanced permissions and preview deployments. Those features matter when several developers share a platform, when production access must be narrower than staging access, or when every pull request needs an isolated review environment.

  • Separate production and non-production environments.
  • Give deployment rights only to the people or automation that need them.
  • Keep database credentials and signing keys out of Compose files and source repositories.
  • Define who can create servers, alter domains, rotate secrets, and destroy resources.
  • Record changes in your source-control or ticketing system even if the platform does not provide a complete audit trail.

Dokploy’s documented advanced permissions and preview deployments make it the stronger candidate for structured team workflows, but verify the exact role matrix, audit history, single sign-on, SCIM, and approval behavior you require. The supplied comparison does not establish that either product provides every enterprise identity feature.

Pricing: license cost is only one line item

Coolify pricing

Coolify’s pricing page labels self-hosting “Free forever” with “Full access to all features,” no feature restrictions, community support, and automated or self-managed updates. “Free” refers to the platform license, not to the servers or the work of operating them.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Coolify Cloud starts at $5 per month for up to two connected servers, with $3 per month for each additional server, according to the pricing page accessed October 14, 2026. These figures can change. You still bring and secure the workload servers, storage, DNS, secrets, and operating system.

Dokploy pricing

Dokploy’s Cloud versus Self-Hosted documentation lists Self-Hosted (OSS): Free and Cloud from $4.50 per month. Its plan table lists Hobby at $4.50 per month per server and Startup at $15 per month for three servers. The page also states that self-hosted updates are manual and Cloud updates are automatic. Confirm current prices, billing units, limits, and included support before purchase.

What your total cost includes

For either product, budget for the application servers, attached or object storage, backups, bandwidth, domains, monitoring, and engineering time. Self-hosting also means maintaining the control-plane host and its backup. A $0 license can be more expensive than a subscription if a missed update or failed restore consumes a weekend; a subscription can be wasteful if your team already operates reliable infrastructure and needs no managed control plane.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Cloud versus self-hosted: who operates what?

Coolify’s documentation explains that the choice changes who operates the Coolify instance, not the resource workflow or the location of your workloads. Dokploy similarly says its Cloud and self-hosted versions share the same deployment engine, including Docker and Traefik integration, the API, and core features.

Responsibility Self-hosted edition Cloud control plane
Control-plane hosting and availability You Vendor for the platform service
Control-plane updates You; Coolify can be automated or self-managed, Dokploy lists manual updates Handled by the vendor according to the service plan
Application and database servers You provide, pay for, secure, patch, and monitor them
Persistent data and workload backups You define retention, destinations, encryption, and restore tests
Secrets, SSH, firewall, and DNS You
Support model Coolify lists community support; Dokploy plan details should be checked currently Vendor support varies by plan

Choose Cloud when automatic control-plane updates, managed availability, and vendor support are worth the recurring fee. Choose self-hosting when you want maximum control, already have patching and backup discipline, and can accept responsibility for the platform itself.

How to choose for common scenarios

Solo developer deploying a few Compose services

Choose Coolify unless a Dokploy-specific integration solves a problem you already have. The free self-hosted license, full feature access, and Compose-oriented workflow keep the initial decision simple. Put the saved subscription budget into backups, storage, and a second recovery location.

Small agency with GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea

Choose Dokploy when those repositories are part of the normal delivery path. Its comparison explicitly names all three providers, while Coolify’s listed source options are GitHub and Git Generic. Validate webhook, deploy-key, and organization-permission behavior with a non-production repository.

Team standardizing on Docker Swarm

Start with Dokploy because native Swarm clustering is listed as a capability and Coolify’s support is marked limited. Confirm node roles, storage behavior, ingress, upgrades, and failure recovery against your intended cluster design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stateful services with many Docker volumes

Favor Dokploy if arbitrary Docker-volume backups are a non-negotiable requirement. Inventory every volume first, including files that are not represented in a database, and prove that a complete restore works on a clean server.

Team needing preview environments and granular permissions

Dokploy is the better documented fit because its comparison highlights preview deployments and advanced permissions. Establish naming, expiration, resource limits, and secret isolation so temporary environments do not become permanent production copies.

Operator who does not want to maintain the control plane

Use the Cloud edition of whichever product fits your deployment workflow. The subscription transfers control-plane hosting, updates, and some availability work; it does not transfer responsibility for the servers and data running your applications.

A practical evaluation and migration checklist

Run the same small acceptance test on both platforms before moving production:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Provision a disposable Linux server with the CPU, memory, disk, SSH, firewall, and DNS settings you expect in production.
  2. Install the self-hosted control plane or create the corresponding Cloud account, then verify that the server connection method meets your security policy.
  3. Deploy a representative Docker Compose application with one public service, one private service, an environment secret, and persistent data.
  4. Connect the repository provider your team actually uses and test a branch or pull-request deployment without exposing production credentials.
  5. Attach a database and a file volume, run a backup, delete the test resource, and perform a full restore to a separate location.
  6. Trigger a failed image build and a failed health check. Confirm the error is visible, the previous release can be restored, and data remains intact.
  7. Measure your own deployment duration, resource use, alert behavior, and recovery time. Treat those observations as environment-specific, not as universal product benchmarks.
  8. Document who owns updates, DNS, secrets, backups, incident response, and account recovery before choosing a production edition.

Limitations and risks to keep in view

  • No published performance winner: the available official material contains no controlled comparison of speed, CPU, memory, uptime, or stability.
  • Free does not mean maintenance-free: self-hosted editions still require patching, monitoring, backup, restore, and incident response.
  • Cloud does not host your workloads: application servers, databases, persistent files, and network security remain customer responsibilities.
  • Feature labels need validation: a table entry such as “monitoring,” “backups,” or “multi-node” does not specify retention, limits, supported storage, or failure behavior.
  • Pricing changes: the listed monthly amounts are snapshots from October 14, 2026 and should be checked on the current plan pages.
  • Clustering increases operational scope: Swarm is useful only when its scheduling and resilience benefits justify managing a cluster.

Verdict

For a self-hosted PaaS on a VPS, choose Coolify when your priority is a free, open-source, Docker Compose-friendly workflow on one or a few servers and you are willing to operate the control plane. Its self-hosted edition has no license fee and no feature restrictions according to its pricing page.

Choose Dokploy when a documented capability changes your architecture or team workflow: native Docker Swarm clustering, GitLab, Bitbucket, or Gitea, additional buildpack choices, explicit CPU/RAM/disk alerts, arbitrary Docker-volume backups, preview deployments, custom build servers, or advanced permissions.

Whichever you select, treat it as a deployment control plane rather than a replacement for infrastructure engineering. Secure and patch the servers, protect secrets, back up persistent data, test restores, and define recovery ownership. That discipline will have a larger effect on the outcome than the absence of a universal benchmark winner.
