Choose viewport or full-page capture
A normal screenshot records the browser viewport—the visible portion of the page. Full-page capture extends the image across the page’s scrollable content. Choose based on how you will use the image: a tall full-page JPG can be awkward to view or share when a viewport capture would show the relevant content.

When no explicit type overrides it, the filename extension selects the type; otherwise screenshots default to PNG. Its screenshot command also supports full-page capture. Check the current CLI help and documentation for the exact option spelling for your installed release; package and browser installation details can vary over time. The CLI runs headless by default.
Use Playwright’s API when the CLI is not enough
The API gives you explicit control over browser launch, navigation, screenshot capture, and cleanup. Install Playwright and its browser according to the official Playwright installation guide. This Node.js example writes a JPEG of the viewport:

Wait for delayed or JavaScript-rendered content
A page may render important content after its initial load. A delay, a wait for a visible element, or a timeout can help align capture timing with the page, but none guarantees that every site’s scripts, images, or network requests are complete.

Check the saved JPG
- Confirm the command completed and the output file exists at the path you specified.
- Open the image or inspect it with your usual image utility to verify it is a JPEG and that the dimensions and visible content are right.
- If the image cuts off content, use full-page capture or adjust the viewport dimensions.
- If content is missing, adjust the wait condition or timing, then capture again.
Troubleshooting
- The command is not found: the CLI may not be installed globally, or its executable may not be on your shell’s PATH. Check the package’s installation instructions and reopen the terminal after changing PATH.
- Output is PNG, not JPG: check that the command’s JPEG format option is spelled as documented for your installed version. In Playwright CLI, use a
.jpegfilename unless an explicit type overrides extension inference. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may still be loading, depend on client-side rendering, or require a particular element to appear. Add an appropriate wait and inspect again; no reviewed documentation promises universal completion for every site.
- Some images are missing in a full-page capture: they may load lazily as the page is scrolled. Check the tool’s full-page behavior and whether the target page requires additional scrolling or interaction.
- Chrome creates
screenshot.pngrather than JPG: that is the documented default in the cited Chrome reference. Use a JPEG-capable CLI or Playwright instead of assuming an undocumented Chrome flag. - The capture takes too long: set a suitable timeout if the tool supports one and reduce unnecessary waits. A timeout limits waiting; it does not fix a page that cannot load or prove the image is complete.
