To keep column headings visible across pages in a PDF, use a semantic HTML table with its header rows inside <thead>, preserve the print display role table-header-group, then print the page to PDF and check the preview. CSS allows print browsers to repeat table header groups, but does not require identical behavior in every browser or layout.
Make the table header repeat in print
A real <thead> is the key: a bold first row elsewhere in the table is not the same semantic header group. CSS 2.2 maps <thead> to display: table-header-group and says print user agents may repeat its rows on each page spanned by a table. The W3C CSS Print Profile includes the same display role. “May” matters: it is not a guarantee that every browser, document structure, or unusual table layout will paginate the same way. Use semantic table markup
If you control the page HTML, place the column labels in a <thead> and the data rows in a <tbody>:

</table>For a table with multiple header rows, keep the header rows within the same <thead>. This also gives assistive technology the table structure it needs; do not rely on bold styling alone to communicate column headings.

Preserve the header group for print
Add or retain this print rule, particularly if existing print CSS changes table elements’ display behavior:

}Use the rule in the stylesheet for the page you are printing. It expresses the intended table-header role; it cannot force a renderer to repeat headers in every case. If you are printing a webpage you do not control, you may not be able to add this CSS directly, so use the browser preview to see what that page produces.

Save the webpage as a PDF
Open the browser’s print preview, choose the PDF destination or save-to-PDF option, and inspect the pages containing the long table before saving. Menu labels can change, so the exact path depends on browser version and platform.

- Open the webpage and open Firefox’s print preview.
- Choose Save to PDF as the destination.
- Review the pages where the table continues. Check page size, margins, scaling, and whether the headings appear on continuation pages.
- Save the PDF if the preview is legible and paginated as intended.

Microsoft Edge
- Open the page and choose the browser’s Print command.
- Use the preview and available controls for page selection, margins, and scaling.
- Check whether browser headers and footers are enabled, and inspect the table’s repeated headings before printing or saving to PDF.
Microsoft documents these print controls at Print in Microsoft Edge. The right margin or scale setting depends on the particular table and should be judged in preview.
Google Chrome
- Open the page and start browser printing.
- In the print dialog, select the PDF destination or save-to-PDF option available on your system.
- Inspect the table pagination and check whether automatic browser headers and footers are wanted; turn them off in the dialog if they interfere.
- Save only after confirming the page scale and legibility in preview.
Chrome’s print output is affected by CSS paged-media rules. Chrome 131 added CSS page-margin boxes; the print dialog can also add automatic header and footer content when there is room. See Chrome for Developers: CSS print margin boxes.

Check pagination before sharing
Do not assume that a successful PDF export means the table is easy to read. Review at least one page where the table begins and one where it continues. Confirm that the column labels are visible, rows are not clipped, and scaling has not made text too small. Page size and margins can change where a table breaks; browser-added headers or footers can consume space. There is no standards-based success rate or universal browser ranking established for this behavior.
- Header on continuation pages: confirm it appears in the preview, not just on the first page.
- Horizontal fit: if columns are clipped, consider landscape orientation or a different scale where the browser offers those controls.
- Readable text: avoid reducing scale so far that labels or values become difficult to read.
- Extra browser text: decide whether date, title, URL, or page-number headers and footers belong in the shared PDF.
Troubleshoot missing or awkward headers
The heading appears only on the first page
Check that the header is actually inside <thead>, rather than the first row of <tbody>, and that print CSS has not replaced the header group’s display role. If you control the stylesheet, apply the table-header-group rule shown above. Then preview again. The CSS specification permits repetition but does not make it mandatory, so a particular document and print renderer may still behave differently.

The PDF cuts off columns or makes them hard to read
Use preview to adjust scale, margins, or orientation if those controls are available. These settings trade page fit against text size; check the result at normal reading size rather than choosing a setting solely because all columns fit on one page.
Page numbers or browser details appear around the table
Look for a headers-and-footers option in the print dialog. Chrome can add this content when there is room, and Edge documents optional browser headers and footers. Turn it off if it is unwanted, then verify that the table still fits.
The webpage is not under your control
You cannot reliably impose the needed semantic structure or print CSS from the print dialog alone. Try the browser’s available simplified-printing options, where offered, and inspect the preview. Mozilla’s documentation describes simplified printing and mentions Print Edit WE; check that extension’s current availability and support before installing it.
