Install the regular puppeteer package and it normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser for its own use, so you do not need to install Chrome as a system application. The browser binary still exists on the machine or container. If you need it off that host, use puppeteer-core and connect to a remotely managed browser.
What “without a local Chrome install” means
Puppeteer needs a browser to render a page before it can produce a PDF. The simplest setup avoids a separate, system-wide Chrome installation, not browser files altogether: the full puppeteer package normally downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing build during installation and launches it from Puppeteer’s cache. The cache location and download size can vary by Puppeteer version and platform; the installation guide lists approximate downloads of 170 MB for macOS, 282 MB for Linux, and 280 MB for Windows, and says the default cache has been $HOME/.cache/puppeteer since Puppeteer v19.0.0. The full package is the right default if “no local Chrome install” means no separate system application. Choose puppeteer-core when you will manage the executable yourself or connect to a remote browser. Unlike puppeteer, puppeteer-core does not download Chrome; Puppeteer configuration files and environment variables do not apply to it. See installation and configuration.

Install Puppeteer and generate a PDF

Use a supported Node.js runtime for the Puppeteer release you install. The current system requirements page lists Node 22.12 or later; verify the requirements for your exact release and deployment image at Puppeteer system requirements.

In your project directory, install the full package:
npm install puppeteerIts normal install process obtains a compatible Chrome for Testing build. If your project uses ES modules, save the following as

Save and run this script:

page.pdfin the current working directory. The launch call uses Puppeteer’s managed browser, so this script does not need a system Chrome path.
Choose the right readiness condition
networkidle2 is an example, not a guarantee that every page is fully rendered. A site may load content after the initial navigation, use lazy-loaded images, animate elements, or keep network connections active. For pages with a known readiness signal, wait for that page-specific condition—for example, a selector that appears when the content is ready—before calling page.pdf(). A fixed delay can help with a known delay but is not a reliable substitute for an application-specific signal.

Understand print layout and colors
page.pdf() uses print CSS by default and returns a Promise<Uint8Array>. If you want the screen layout instead, call await page.emulateMediaType('screen') before generating the PDF. Printing can also alter colors; for color-sensitive output, the API documentation points to the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust. See the Page.pdf() API.
Control the browser download in CI and containers
When package install scripts are blocked
Some package managers or project policies prevent dependency install scripts from running, so Puppeteer may install without its browser. During image or build setup, run the official recovery command:
npx puppeteer browsers installAlternatively, configure the package manager to allow Puppeteer’s postinstall script. Follow the instructions for your package manager and project policy in the installation guide.
When you need a specific browser build
You can use Puppeteer’s browser CLI to select a channel or build. For example:
npx @puppeteer/browsers install chrome@stableYou can also specify a browser build or version with the CLI. Pinning can make builds more reproducible, but align the browser version with the Puppeteer version: Puppeteer documents compatibility with specific browser versions. Consult the browser CLI documentation and installation guidance.

When Linux dependencies are missing
On Ubuntu or Debian, the browser may need system libraries in addition to the downloaded browser files. The Puppeteer CLI offers this command to attempt dependency installation:

Check your target image and permissions before using it in a container build; a successful browser download alone does not prove that all runtime libraries are present. The system requirements list supported platforms and note that operating-system libraries and archive extraction utilities may be required.
Use an externally managed or remote browser
For a browser installed by your environment, use puppeteer-core and specify its executable path:

}Replace the example path with the executable path provided by your operating system image or deployment environment. Do not assume that a path from another machine or container exists in this runtime.
If the browser must not be present on the application host, use puppeteer-core to connect to a remote browser endpoint instead of launching a local executable. The connection URL, credentials, and network configuration depend on the remote environment; confirm those details with its provider. Puppeteer’s installation documentation describes the distinction between the full and core packages at pptr.dev.

Troubleshoot common PDF-generation failures

“Could not find Chrome (ver. …)”: Puppeteer cannot find the browser build it expects. If install scripts were blocked, run
npx puppeteer browsers installin the build environment. If you deliberately use a managed browser, usepuppeteer-corewith the correctexecutablePath. -
Browser downloads fail during installation: Check whether the build environment permits dependency install scripts and can reach the browser download. If scripts are intentionally disabled, download the browser explicitly during image or build setup.

Chrome starts locally but fails in the container: The image may lack required operating-system libraries or extraction utilities. Check Puppeteer’s requirements for the exact OS and architecture; on Ubuntu/Debian, the CLI dependency option requires root.

PDF omits content or images: The page may still be loading when capture begins. Replace a generic navigation wait with a readiness condition tied to the page’s content, and account for lazy-loaded elements or delayed requests.

PDF looks different from the browser window: PDF generation uses print media by default. Emulate screen media before printing if that is the intended appearance, and account for print-specific CSS and color adjustment.

A remote connection fails: Check the endpoint, authentication, network access, and the remote browser’s availability with the service or environment operator. These settings are specific to the chosen deployment.
