To keep a webpage’s dark colors in a PDF, open the browser’s print preview and enable its background-printing option, if available. Check the preview before saving. If you control the page’s code, add print-specific CSS and set print-color-adjust: exact on elements whose colors matter. Neither setting guarantees an exact match: browsers and user print preferences can still change or omit colors.
Why dark mode can disappear in a PDF
A browser displays a webpage using screen styles, but printing or saving as PDF can apply different print styles. Browsers may also change colors or omit backgrounds to improve readability or reduce ink use. As a result, a dark page can become a white PDF with dark text, even when it looked correct in the tab. The browser’s dark theme is a separate matter: it changes browser interface surfaces, not necessarily the website’s print rules or the colors in its PDF. Chrome’s dark-mode help covers the browser theme, while WebKit’s dark-mode documentation discusses website dark-mode support.

Save the page with dark backgrounds in a browser
- Open the webpage and choose the browser’s Print command to open print preview. Do not assume the dark appearance of the tab will carry into the PDF.
- Inspect the preview. If background colors or images are missing, open the additional print settings and enable the option named something like Print backgrounds or Background graphics, if offered.
- Check that text remains readable against the background. A dark background may be appropriate for on-screen reading but less practical for a PDF that will be printed on paper.
- Save or print to PDF only after reviewing the preview. Open the saved file and check the pages you care about; the preview and saved output may not always be identical.
Firefox documents a Save to PDF destination and a Print backgrounds option under More settings in its print workflow. The exact labels and available controls can vary by browser and version. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions.

If you control the webpage, add print CSS
A page author can define print-specific styles with @media print. To ask the browser to preserve intentional colors, apply print-color-adjust: exact to the elements whose background and foreground colors belong together. For example:

}Use the property on the relevant content rather than assuming that setting a dark color on the screen automatically determines the print result. Keep important text and layout visible in print styles, and test the actual output. print-color-adjust: exact communicates that the colors are intentional; it is not a force switch. User settings take precedence, and browsers retain discretion to adjust output. The W3C CSS Color Adjustment specification and MDN’s property reference describe this behavior.

Inspect print styling in Chrome DevTools
If you are debugging a page, Chrome DevTools can emulate print media so you can inspect how its print CSS affects the page before opening the print dialog. This helps identify styles that hide content or change colors, but the final PDF still needs to be checked. See Chrome’s DevTools instructions for emulating CSS media features. Chrome’s documentation also covers print-specific page features, including CSS page margins.
When browser printing is not enough
If the PDF still loses its dark palette, try another browser’s print preview and inspect its saved output. If you can edit the site, adjust its print stylesheet and test again. The right result depends on the page’s print CSS, browser behavior, and print settings; there is no universal toggle that guarantees a pixel-for-pixel match. For a physically printed document, consider whether retaining large dark areas is worth the extra ink and whether text contrast remains comfortable.
