For an Indian banking portal you are authorized to render, use Playwright for Java with Chromium: navigate through the bank-approved session, verify the intended page has loaded, and call Page.pdf() with explicit print settings. Treat the result as a rendered copy—not an official bank statement or transaction record unless the bank’s own workflow says it is one. Customer-specific pages require institution-approved authentication, storage, access, and retention controls.
First decide whether browser rendering is appropriate
A browser-generated PDF is useful when an authorized application needs a visual copy of a web page. It does not replace a bank-provided statement, receipt, or export endpoint when an authoritative record is required. Prefer the bank’s own export for those cases.

- Public information: render only the intended public page.
- Internal or customer-specific content: obtain the institution’s approval for the use case, authentication flow, destination, retention period, and access controls before implementing it.
- Login and export controls: do not bypass login, MFA, access restrictions, or a portal’s export rules. Do not hard-code customer credentials or reuse one customer’s session for another.
The RBI’s Digital Payment Security Controls address secure-by-design practices, threat modelling, application lifecycle security, and testing for covered entities and applications. The RBI IT Services Outsourcing Direction addresses matters including provider monitoring and customer-information confidentiality where applicable. These sources do not determine the obligations of every portal or deployment; the institution’s security and compliance teams must assess applicability and amendments.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set up Playwright Java and Chromium
Playwright Java is distributed as Maven modules. Its installation guide lists Java 8 or higher as a system requirement; for production, select a currently supported Java and Playwright/browser combination for the bank’s environment. Follow the official Playwright Java installation guide to add the current Maven dependency and install the matching Chromium runtime and operating-system dependencies. PDF generation in this workflow uses Chromium; do not assume another browser engine supports the same PDF API.
The source example below assumes the Playwright Java dependency is already installed. It accepts an HTTPS URL, checks it against an exact approved hostname supplied through the environment, waits for an application-specific ready selector, and writes PDF bytes to a caller-specified path. The selector and hostname are configuration—not authentication. Integrate authentication only through the bank-approved design.

Run it with the exact approved hostname, URL, output path, and a selector that appears only when the relevant application content is ready. For example, configure APPROVED_HOST in the service environment, then pass the bank-approved URL, a controlled destination such as /secure-output/page.pdf, and a selector chosen with the portal team. Do not put customer data or secrets in command-line arguments if they may be exposed in process listings or operational logs.

The selector wait is intentionally application-specific. A visible page shell alone may not mean asynchronous account data has finished loading. Validate the expected page state without logging rendered text or account data. In production, add explicit handling for navigation errors, selector timeouts, unexpected redirects, and destination-write failures; the illustrative API shape has not been tested against a particular banking portal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose print behavior for the page
Page.pdf() returns PDF bytes and renders using print CSS by default. Its documented options include paper format, margins, page ranges, scale, background printing, CSS page-size preference, tagged output, and document outlines. Consult the Playwright Java Page API for the deployed library version. Defaults matter: backgrounds are off, CSS page size does not take priority, and tagged output is off.
- Paper size and margins: the example explicitly selects A4. Set margins when the portal’s print stylesheet does not provide suitable ones, and inspect the result for clipping.
- CSS page size:
setPreferCSSPageSize(true)lets a page’s CSS@pagesize take precedence. If the portal should use the API’s chosen paper format instead, omit that preference or set it false. - Backgrounds: enable them only when color or background graphics are necessary to understand the page; the API default is not to print them.
- Screen-styled output: if the intended PDF should reflect screen media rather than print CSS, emulate screen media before calling
page.pdf(), as the API documentation specifies. This can change layout and pagination. - Page ranges, scale, outlines, and tags: use these only when the output requirement calls for them. A tagged-PDF option does not by itself establish accessibility conformance.
Protect customer content throughout the job
Rendering a logged-in page makes the browser process, output file, temporary storage, and operational diagnostics part of the customer-data path. Design those components under the bank’s approved architecture and policy.
- Use a fresh, appropriately isolated browser context for each job. Never carry one customer’s session into another job.
- Keep authentication and session handling within the bank-approved flow; do not store credentials in source code.
- Use a controlled output destination with least-privilege access, encryption, and a defined retention period.
- Ensure temporary files, exception messages, traces, and monitoring do not expose account details or rendered page text.
- If a third-party service or outsourced infrastructure processes the page or PDF, have the institution assess the relationship and applicable outsourcing, confidentiality, incident, and data-storage controls before use.
Validate the document before relying on it
Test representative, institution-approved pages and states in a non-production or otherwise approved environment. Check for clipped columns, unexpected page breaks, missing fonts or language glyphs, omitted dynamic content, and differences between print and screen styling. Review the generated file itself, not just whether Page.pdf() returned bytes.

An Indian government document describes processes and observations for accessible PDFs on government websites. It is useful context for validation, but does not establish that a PDF generated from a banking portal meets an applicable accessibility standard. See the accessible-PDF process document; determine the requirements for the intended audience and use with the institution.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Chromium fails to launch: confirm the Playwright Java dependency and matching browser/runtime dependencies were installed for the deployment environment using the official installation guide. Check operating-system libraries and execution permissions.
- The ready-selector wait times out: the selector may be wrong, the page may still be loading data, or navigation may have reached a login or error screen. Confirm the approved flow and page state without recording sensitive content; use a selector tied to actual application readiness.
- The PDF is blank or incomplete: a navigation event is not proof that client-side content is ready. Wait for the portal’s approved readiness condition and verify the expected page state before printing.
- The layout is clipped or paginated badly: inspect print CSS, paper format, margins, scale, and CSS page-size preference. Compare print-media output with the portal’s intended print layout.
- Background colors or graphics are missing: background printing is off by default; enable it only if required.
- Glyphs or fonts are missing: verify that required fonts are available in the browser runtime and validate the output for each language the portal supports.
- The PDF cannot be written: check destination permissions, available storage, and the application’s controlled output path. Avoid exposing destination or page details in broadly accessible logs.
- The content is not an official record: browser rendering captures a page presentation. Use the bank’s designated statement, receipt, or transaction export workflow when authoritative status is required.
Or skip the browser setup
For a page the institution has approved for external processing, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API that also supports PDF output. This generic one-call example captures a public demonstration page as WebP; it is not a banking-portal export and does not show a PDF-format parameter. Check the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the documented PDF request options before using that output format. Do not send customer-specific banking content to an external service unless the bank has approved the service and data flow.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sources and version scope
The Playwright Java installation and API pages are living documentation accessed on October 3, 2026; confirm the API behavior and dependencies for the version actually deployed. The RBI outsourcing direction is dated April 10, 2023, and the accessible-PDF document is identified as version 2.0 and circa 2020. Confirm current requirements and applicability with the institution rather than treating these references as a portal-specific legal determination.
