Conversation IDs Explained: What They Remember—and What They Don’t

A conversation ID can help retrieve conversation history, but project files and instructions must be supplied separately—and the ID is not an authorization token.

A conversation ID can help an application find or continue conversation-related state. It does not, by itself, contain the project files, repository instructions, or other current inputs an AI coding agent needs. The application must retrieve the relevant history and supply project context separately.

What is a conversation ID?

A conversation ID is an identifier used by a particular service or application to refer to conversation-related state. Its meaning depends on the framework: it may select stored history, accompany service-managed history, or serve as a default session identifier in a specific platform setup. The label alone does not tell you exactly what is stored or where.

For example, the OpenAI Agents SDK session documentation describes sessions that store conversation history for a session and make it available across subsequent runs. The session ID selects that history; it is not itself the history.

Does a conversation ID contain project context?

No—not inherently. A repository’s current files, project rules, and task-specific inputs are distinct from conversation history. The cited session documentation describes mechanisms for retaining or restoring history and state; it does not define a universal project-context bundle carried inside every conversation ID.

In a coding-agent application, resuming an earlier discussion might restore what the user and agent said previously. The application still needs to load the current repository instructions and relevant files for the new task. That separation is an application-design choice, not a guarantee made by a conversation identifier.

How does an agent remember earlier messages?

An identifier can help an application select state, but the continuation mechanism depends on the framework and its storage design. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation describes session options including in-memory, SQLite, Redis-backed, and OpenAI-hosted storage. A session can make history available across runs; the identifier is a reference used to select the session, not a self-contained record.

Microsoft’s Agent Framework session documentation describes service-issued identifiers that may accompany service-managed history. It also describes an AgentSession with local or session state that can be serialized and restored. These are framework-specific behaviors, so an implementation should follow the documentation for the exact product and version it uses.

Is a conversation ID an authorization token?

No. An identifier should not be treated as proof that the person presenting it is allowed to access the associated history. The OpenAI Agents SDK states: “A session ID selects conversation history; the session ID does not authenticate a user or authorize access to that history.”

Microsoft’s Agent Framework documentation warns that in hosted or multi-user apps reusing a backing key or project, developers should not treat service_session_id, previous_response_id, or conversation/conversation_id as end-user authorization boundaries. Keep service-side IDs in trusted application storage, authenticate the user or tenant, and verify ownership before resuming or retrieving state. A raw ID may be opaque, but opacity is not an access-control check.

How is conversation history different from server-side continuation?

History stored through an SDK session and continuation through a service identifier are distinct approaches. The OpenAI Agents SDK documentation says a run cannot combine its session mechanism with run-level continuation options such as conversation_id or previous_response_id. Choose the mechanism that fits the application’s storage and continuity needs rather than assuming that every kind of state can be combined.

Why can’t “conversation ID” be defined the same way everywhere?

Products use identifiers and sessions differently. In the documented Microsoft Teams sessions-enabled setup, a session is an independent conversation context in a one-to-one chat, and the conversation ID is the default session ID. That platform-specific rule should not be generalized to other APIs or agent frameworks. Check the relevant product documentation to determine what its ID selects, what state is retained, and how that state is restored.
