The right fix depends on the controller model, platform, and whether it connects by USB or wirelessly. One documented case is an Xbox 360 wired controller on Steam Link disconnecting during vibration when connected through a USB extension; Steam recommends removing the extension and connecting directly.
First identify the controller and connection
Before changing settings or buying a cable, note the controller model, the console or computer, the game, and the operating system. Also identify whether it is connected by USB, Bluetooth, or another wireless adapter, and whether the setup includes an extension, hub, or other USB devices.

- Does it disconnect only as vibration begins, or at other times too?
- Does switching vibration off stop the disconnection? This is a diagnostic test, not a repair.
- Does the problem follow the controller to another host, or stay with the original console or computer?
These distinctions matter: the available support guidance does not establish one cause or fix that applies to every controller.

Xbox 360 wired controller on Steam Link: remove the USB extension
Steam’s Xbox 360 wired controller disconnects guidance describes reports of disconnection when vibration activates while a USB extension is in use. Connect the controller directly to the Steam Link and test again. This is a specific report and recommendation; it does not establish that extensions cause the same symptom on other controllers or platforms.

For other intermittent USB problems, test the connection path
If the controller is wired by USB and disconnects intermittently, Steam recommends basic connection checks in its USB connection and contention troubleshooting:
- Try another USB port.
- Temporarily disconnect other USB devices, then check whether the symptom changes.
- If practical, test the controller on another computer.
If changing the port, removing other devices, or switching hosts changes the behavior, investigate that USB path or host setup. These checks do not prove that USB contention explains every disconnection triggered by rumble.

Follow the instructions for the specific controller
DUALSHOCK 4
For DUALSHOCK 4 wireless-controller problems, PlayStation advises checking that the controller has enough charge and that vibration is enabled in the console settings. Its reset and re-pair procedure is:
- Turn off and unplug the PS4.
- Disconnect the controller from the USB cable.
- Press and hold the small reset button on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS4 with USB, then press the PS button to pair it again.
PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 support guidance also covers charge and vibration settings. If the controller still disconnects, record whether the symptom occurs wired as well as wirelessly and whether it follows the controller to another host.

Nintendo Switch controllers with HD Rumble
Nintendo’s HD Rumble troubleshooting recommends checking the controller’s battery charge and updating its firmware. That guidance addresses rumble that is not working correctly; it does not diagnose a general vibration-triggered disconnection.
DualSense used wired on a PC
For a DualSense connected to a PC by USB, PlayStation Accessories documentation says removing the USB cable disconnects and turns off the controller. If the disconnect happens when the cable is removed, that is expected wired behavior, not evidence of a vibration fault. See PlayStation Accessories.

When the symptom persists
After the checks that apply to your model, note whether the issue happens with another compatible cable or port, on another host, and with vibration disabled. If the behavior follows the controller across hosts or continues after model-appropriate connection checks, contact the controller or platform maker’s support channel for guidance on that model. The available instructions do not establish a universal internal cause or repair for an unspecified controller; they do not show that the rumble motor, battery contact, power circuit, wireless interference, or firmware is responsible.
