To survive combat in CONTROL Resonant’s Unknown Zones, use melee when you have a safe opening to restore Combat Ability, spend abilities to interrupt or stagger threats, then capitalize on executions before returning to attacks. Read enemy attacks and dodge deliberately; if a fight’s pressure or timing is the problem, adjust the matching Assist Mode setting rather than forcing one supposedly optimal build.
Use a repeatable combat loop
Remedy describes combat as close-range melee linked to supernatural abilities. Melee hits restore the Combat Ability resource, while abilities can stun enemies and create execution opportunities. Executions temporarily increase melee damage. Together, these mechanics suggest a practical rhythm: attack with melee when there is a safe opening, use an ability to interrupt or set up a target, take an execution when one is available, and then return to attacks.

This is a system-level approach, not a promise that every melee opening is safe. Remedy Entertainment Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov describes combat as “close-range and demanding,” with enemies that require players to read attacks, manage staggers and status effects, and time dodges. Choose forms and abilities for the role you want
The Aberrant switches between Primary and Secondary Forms and has Combo Enders. Remedy says these let players tune speed, range, and combat role within a build. Choose based on the distance and style you prefer rather than chasing a form presented as universally best; the available official descriptions do not rank forms or establish an optimal Unknown Zone setup.

Remedy describes builds ranging from heavy close-range fighting to more tactical ability use. Mold Turrets, for example, attack independently and apply harmful status effects. Consider how a form and ability work together: a close-range approach favors opportunities to land melee hits, while an independently attacking turret can add pressure while you handle other threats. These are different roles, not a verified build ranking. Remedy’s combat and customization overview.
Adjust the specific part of combat that is stopping you
Assist Mode lets you change combat settings independently, and can be enabled or disabled during gameplay. Remedy’s guidance is to tune the source of the difficulty rather than select a single overall difficulty. Mohov puts it this way: “The idea is simple: instead of asking you to choose an overall difficulty, we let you change the specific parts of combat that aren’t working for you.” The same PlayStation Blog article says trophies and achievements are not gated behind Assist Mode. - Enemies overwhelm you from multiple directions: reduce Enemy Aggression.
- Dodge timing feels too strict: widen the Perfect Dodge Window or reduce Enemy Projectile Speed.
- You take too much damage or deal too little: adjust Incoming Damage or Outgoing Damage independently.
- Enemies take too long to stagger: increase Outgoing Falter, which controls how quickly you break enemy posture.
- You run short of supernatural ability use in chaotic fights: increase Power Recovery Speed.
- Melee positioning is difficult: Enhanced Melee Magnetizing makes positioning during melee attacks more forgiving.
Change the setting that matches the problem you are experiencing; the options address different sources of friction and do not require restarting the game.
Use the Gap to improve your build
The Gap is where you shape your build around three pillars: supernatural Combat Abilities, Aberrant Weapon Forms, and Talents that strengthen the relationship between abilities and melee. Defeating powerful Resonants grants unique abilities, and some encounters offer branching choices. Remedy says not everything can be unlocked in one playthrough, so treat build decisions as choices about the tools and synergies you want rather than assuming every option will be available at once. Remedy’s overview of progression and the Gap.
Use Artifacts with their conditions in mind
Artifacts are equippable passive modifiers that can affect survivability, combat, exploration, or resource economy. Some come with conditions or trade-offs, so judge an Artifact by whether its effect suits the way you approach a particular fight—not just by its headline benefit. Remedy’s New Game Plus article says players can equip up to three Artifacts during a first playthrough and unlock a fourth slot in New Game Plus. Remedy’s New Game Plus overview.
Consider optional activities if fights feel unusually punishing
A PC Gamer reviewer reported that, after prioritizing story and side quests, they reached areas where enemies had scaled beyond Dylan’s current level. The reviewer found that returning to combat encounters and world activities helped bring him back up to par. That is one reviewer’s experience, not an official rule that every player must grind. If your fights feel unexpectedly difficult, consider optional activities and available upgrades before concluding that your combat approach alone is the problem. PC Gamer’s review.

Match the fix to the problem
| What you need | Options to consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| More forgiving close-range pressure | Melee-focused form and Enhanced Melee Magnetizing | Forms can tune combat role, and this Assist Mode setting makes melee positioning more forgiving. Remedy does not identify this as a universally strongest combination. |
| More ability-driven or independent pressure | Tactical supernatural abilities such as Mold Turrets; increase Power Recovery Speed if ability management is the sticking point | Mold Turrets attack independently and apply harmful status effects; Power Recovery Speed addresses ability recovery. |
| Greater staying power | Choose Artifacts that support survivability, checking their conditions and trade-offs | Artifacts can affect survivability, but their effects may be conditional. |
| Faster posture breaks | Increase Outgoing Falter | Outgoing Falter controls how quickly you break enemy posture. |
The sources establish system-level options, not exact Unknown Zone routes, boss-phase solutions, numeric tuning, or tested optimal builds. There is no evidence-based ranking of specific setups; choose around preferred combat distance, resource recovery needs, survivability versus damage, and any Artifact conditions.
