CONTROL Resonant is a zone-based action game, not an open-world sandbox. For a smoother start, explore each area without losing sight of the main campaign, learn enemy attack cues before committing to melee, and use the Gap to tailor Dylan’s upgrades. If a fight is the problem, Assist Mode lets you adjust individual combat settings during play.
Is CONTROL Resonant open world?
No. Remedy describes CONTROL Resonant as a game built around distinct, expansive zones rather than an open world. Dylan Faden explores a warped Manhattan through areas that combine the central story with optional activities, hidden encounters, lore, and discoveries. Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov summarized the design this way: “Control Resonant isn’t an open-world game, but it is built around large, distinct, and expansive zones filled with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries.” Remedy’s gameplay overview and Mohov’s explanation of the zone-based structure are the basis for that distinction.

Think of exploration as looking carefully within a crafted zone, not roaming a seamless sandbox. The West Incursion Zone, for example, is described as an early area where architecture and gravity become increasingly distorted. The layout and discoveries are part of the experience, but the available descriptions do not establish a single best route through it.
How should a beginner approach melee combat?
Dylan’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant, puts close-range combat at the center of the game. Remedy’s combat guidance emphasizes reading enemy attacks, managing staggers and status effects, and timing dodges. That makes observation more useful than rushing into a sequence of attacks you have not yet learned to interrupt or evade. Remedy’s combat description outlines those systems.

- STEP INTO A WARPED REALITY: Explore multiple areas of a ravaged Manhattan in an expansive, unfamiliar, and exciting world. Traverse perception-bending locations and grapple with gravity anomalies that distort the vertical and horizontal plane, adding additional dimensions to puzzles and new tactical decisions to combat. Meet faces old and new on a path fraught with risk but rich in opportunity as the cityscape is reshaped and reality is redefined by a godlike force.
- MASTER THE PARANATURAL: Channel the raw experiences of Dylan’s past to help understand his present and dig deeper into the inner workings of the FBC and reveal the horrors threatening humankind. Tap into power he must learn to master and take choices to shape how his abilities manifest and grow. Explore a deep progression system to define how Dylan adapts to emerging dangers. Forge connections crucial to Dylan’s fight to retain his humanity as he journeys from former test subject to paranatural superweapon
- THE FIGHT SHIFTS. YOUR WEAPON SHIFTS WITH IT: Meet constantly evolving threats head-on, utilising the environment, deploying elemental abilities and using the raw force Dylan’s shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant. Wield the Aberrant in its many deadly forms. Deliver bone-crunching blows with a two-handed hammer and flow seamlessly into the swift precision of dual-wielded blades as this paranatural weapon morphs on demand to meet each new challenge.
- SHARED LEGACY. NEW THREAT: FBC Director Jesse Faden's lockdown is no longer holding. A paranatural catastrophe has spilled beyond the Oldest House and onto the streets of Manhattan, and the Bureau's grip on containment is failing. Jesse Faden walked into the Oldest House to confront the threat within. Now Dylan must walk out of it to contain the threat beyond.
- Watch an enemy before committing. Learn which attacks are coming and when the opening to respond appears.
- Treat dodging as timing, not just movement. If an attack keeps catching you, focus on its cue and adjust the dodge timing rather than changing several habits at once.
- Pay attention to stagger and status effects. These are documented parts of combat, so notice how they change an encounter instead of treating every enemy as a simple damage race.
- Change one variable when stuck. Try a different approach to timing, positioning, or an Assist Mode setting, then see whether that addresses the specific difficulty.
These are practical implications of Remedy’s described mechanics, not a tested combo or guaranteed strategy. The available official material does not establish an optimal Aberrant form, ability rotation, or early build.
Why are Resonants important?
Resonants are powerful boss enemies and also progression milestones. Remedy says defeating them is the primary way Dylan expands his supernatural arsenal, with each victory rewarding a new combat ability. If a Resonant blocks progress, it is not necessarily a side challenge to ignore: overcoming these encounters is tied to gaining new powers. The official gameplay overview describes their role.
How do exploration and progression work?
The campaign, optional stories, and zone discoveries serve different purposes. Remedy identifies Dylan’s Journey as the main campaign and World Quests as self-contained narrative stories. Manhattan is divided into crafted zones with their own encounters, lore, and secrets, so optional exploration can add context and activity alongside the central narrative. Remedy’s overview of the game describes these elements.

Use the Gap to shape your playstyle
The Gap is Dylan’s place to manage progression: he can unlock upgrades for himself and the Aberrant, test builds, and craft Artifacts. Since the choices shape how he fights, use it to respond to what is giving you trouble rather than assuming one setup is universally best. Remedy’s description of the Gap covers its role.
What Artifacts do
Artifacts are equippable passive modifiers. They can affect survival, combat, exploration, or resource economy, and some come with conditions or trade-offs. An Artifact is therefore a way to tune a build, not simply a flat upgrade that is automatically right for every situation.
In a pre-launch New Game Plus article, Remedy’s Sergey Mohov described a limit of up to three equipped Artifacts in a first playthrough and a fourth slot in New Game Plus. That same pre-launch article says some abilities and upgrades carry forward, while traversal abilities do not. These are pre-launch details; the current implementation should be checked in-game rather than assumed from that announcement. Remedy’s New Game Plus article.
How do I make CONTROL Resonant easier?
Use Assist Mode to adjust the specific mechanic causing trouble instead of treating difficulty as an all-or-nothing choice. Remedy says its settings can be enabled or disabled at any point during gameplay, and that using Assist Mode does not block trophies or achievements. Remedy’s Assist Mode explanation describes the options.

PC performance and console display setup
On PC, compare your hardware with the final system requirements and use an SSD as specified by Remedy’s support guidance. Start with a display resolution and refresh rate that suit your monitor, then choose a graphics preset; if performance is unstable, reduce demanding settings. Exact requirement values are not included here, so check the current Remedy PC performance guidance rather than relying on a generic specification.

On PS5, Remedy recommends automatic resolution and video output settings. Its support article describes a PS5 Pro Balanced mode target of 40 fps at 2160p with ray tracing, which requires a 120 Hz-compatible display. A display’s refresh rate is its capability, not a promise that the game will render at the same frame rate. Consult Remedy’s PS5 display and performance guidance for current details.
Audio and accessibility
Confirm that the console or PC is sending sound to the intended audio output and supported format. Remedy recommends checking master volume, dialogue, music, effects, and accessibility audio settings. PS5 3D Audio requires a compatible headset; it is an optional feature, not a requirement for play. See Remedy’s audio guidance.

Protect saves before troubleshooting or changing systems
Before deleting save data, reinstalling, or moving to another system, confirm cloud synchronization and back up saves where the platform supports it. Remedy warns against manually transferring saves between storefronts unless an official support page confirms that transfer is supported. For troubleshooting, its suggested order starts with game updates and a restart, then storage and output checks and platform-specific help before reinstalling. Follow the current Remedy troubleshooting guidance before taking a step that could put progress at risk.
