Control D vs. NextDNS: Features, Privacy, Performance, and Pricing Compared

NextDNS offers a published free tier and personal pricing with extensive filtering and log controls. Control D emphasizes scheduled profiles and selective traffic redirection; its SMB price is not a personal-plan price.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose NextDNS if you want a query-limited free tier, a published personal subscription price, broad filtering controls, and explicit choices for optional logs. Consider Control D if you want scheduled profiles or its standout feature: redirecting selected traffic through proxy locations. Neither service is an all-purpose VPN, and the available evidence does not establish a universal winner for privacy or speed. Their published prices also describe different plans in different currencies, so they are not directly comparable.

What these services do—and what sets them apart

Control D and NextDNS are configurable DNS filtering services. When a device looks up a domain name, its DNS resolver can apply rules before returning an answer. Depending on the rules, that can block a domain associated with ads, trackers, or threats, or allow it. Both services support encrypted DNS options, so a device can send DNS requests over an encrypted connection rather than exposing them as ordinary DNS traffic to local network observers.

The practical distinction is emphasis. NextDNS presents a broad set of filtering and logging controls, including threat protection, ad and tracker blocking, parental controls, analytics, and custom lists. Control D emphasizes profiles, scheduled rules, service-level filtering, and traffic redirection. The useful choice depends on which controls you will actually use—not on a blanket claim that one blocks more for everyone.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

That range makes it a plausible starting point if you want one profile to combine security, content restrictions, and custom domain rules. The presence of a control does not guarantee a particular result: the filters and lists you enable determine what gets blocked, and false positives or missed domains may require adjusting an allow or deny rule.

Control D: profiles, schedules, and service rules

Control D’s personal-use overview describes family profiles, scheduled blocking, service-level rules, content filtering, and location redirection. These controls can be useful when different devices or people need different policies, or when you want a rule to apply to a service rather than manage every domain separately.

Its business documentation also lists custom rules, analytics, SIEM streaming, multi-tenancy, and traffic redirection. Those are business features in the reviewed materials; their presence there is not proof that every personal plan includes them. Check the plan’s current feature list before relying on a specific capability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does one block more?

The documented feature lists show different controls, not a controlled comparison of real-world blocking effectiveness. Results depend on the enabled categories, lists, custom rules, and the domains your devices contact. If one service blocks a site or app you need, review its logs and rules and adjust the relevant profile rather than assuming the provider is categorically better or worse.

Profiles, devices, and protocol choices

Think of a DNS service as a policy layer that must be attached to each device, browser, operating system, or router you want covered. NextDNS’s Free and Pro pricing pages list unlimited devices and configurations, but the Free allowance still counts queries generated by all of those devices. A large household can therefore use many devices without a device-count surcharge while consuming the monthly query quota more quickly.

Control D’s profiles and scheduled rules are particularly relevant when policy should vary by device or time. For example, a family may want different profiles for adults and children, or a schedule that changes blocking at certain times. The documented feature does not mean every profile or protocol is included in every plan, so verify the account-level limits before building a complicated setup.

DoH and DoT are listed for NextDNS. Control D’s business pricing material lists DoH, DoT, DoQ, DoH3, and legacy DNS. DoQ and DoH3 can matter if your client or network supports them, but a protocol appearing on a business page is not evidence that it is enabled for a personal subscription. Use the protocol your device supports consistently when comparing latency, and confirm that the endpoint is configured correctly rather than falling back silently to ordinary DNS.

Router-level deployment can cover more devices, while per-device deployment allows different profiles. The right choice depends on whether you want one household policy or separate policies. Whichever method you choose, test a blocked domain, an allowed domain, and an everyday application after setup. A successful encrypted connection alone does not prove that the intended filter profile is active.

Privacy: distinguish encryption, logs, and account data

Encrypted DNS protects the connection between a device and its resolver from some observers on the local network. It does not remove the resolver from the process: the provider still handles DNS requests in order to answer them. A privacy comparison therefore needs to consider transport encryption, query logging, retention, analytics, account information, and the provider’s stated processing and sharing practices separately.

NextDNS logging controls and policy statements

NextDNS says users can choose whether to log, what data to log, how long to retain it, and the storage jurisdiction. Its listed jurisdiction choices are the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, and Switzerland. The service says logs can be disabled or retained from one hour to two years, and that users can view, export, or delete their data.

NextDNS’s privacy policy says it does not sell, license, sublicense, or share data submitted directly or indirectly by users. It also says that, when answering a DNS query, the server discards request and response data immediately after replying if the user has not specifically requested that data be logged. These are the provider’s policy statements, not independent verification of its practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control D data practices and business retention

Control D’s privacy policy was last updated February 26, 2026. It says the company primarily acts as a PII processor and describes technical data it may collect when people use its website and platform, including IP address, device and browser details, URLs visited before using the service, and visit timing. The policy describes processing for contract performance, service-improvement analytics, and model training using anonymized data provided voluntarily; it also describes subcontractors and safeguards for cross-border transfers. It says users can opt out of model training.

Separately, Control D’s business pricing page lists 30 days of raw query retention and up to one year of lower-resolution analytics. It describes hourly granularity for the most recent month and daily granularity for the most recent year, and says organizations can choose among three storage regions. These business settings should not be treated as the logging defaults or choices for all personal accounts.

Neither provider’s own policy is an independent privacy audit. If your decision depends on a particular retention period, location, or processing purpose, check the settings and terms for the exact plan you intend to use.

Privacy questions to answer before subscribing

  • Can logging be disabled, and is that setting available on the plan you are considering?
  • What retention duration and data region can you select?
  • Are analytics separate from raw query logs, and do they use a different retention period?
  • Does the policy distinguish DNS-query data from account, billing, device, and website-interaction data?
  • Can you export or delete stored data, and can you opt out of optional model training?

These questions prevent a common mistake: treating “encrypted DNS” as if it answered every privacy question. Encryption changes who can observe the connection in transit; it does not by itself specify what the resolver stores or how account and platform data are processed.

Pricing: compare the plan type as well as the number

Service and plan Published price and allowance What to keep in mind
NextDNS Free £0 per month; 300,000 queries per month; unlimited devices and configurations; access to all features. After the monthly query quota, DNS continues to resolve as a standard, non-blocking service. The pricing page shows prices in GBP.
NextDNS Pro £1.79 per month or £17.90 per year; unlimited queries, devices, and configurations. The page describes this plan as intended for personal and close-family use.
Control D SMB $2 per endpoint per month. This is a business rate, not a personal subscription price. The currency and billing unit differ from NextDNS Pro.
Control D personal Price not stated on the reviewed personal-use page. Do not infer a personal price from the SMB rate or from older comparison claims.

For a household, NextDNS provides a clear published personal price and a free option with a defined monthly query allowance. The 300,000-query limit is a DNS-query count, not a device count: the free plan lists unlimited devices, but queries can continue accumulating across those devices. Once the quota is exceeded, the service answers DNS requests without blocking, which changes the protection behavior rather than simply stopping name resolution.

Control D’s $2-per-endpoint-per-month SMB price is useful only when evaluating that business offer. It cannot establish what an individual or family would pay. Because the published figures use GBP versus USD and consumer/family versus business-per-endpoint pricing, an unqualified claim that one is cheaper would be misleading. Check current prices, currency, billing period, and eligible use before subscribing.

Pricing pitfalls

Do not compare £1.79 per month with $2 per endpoint as though they describe the same product. One is a personal subscription with unlimited queries; the other is a business unit price tied to endpoints. Exchange rates, taxes, billing frequency, and eligibility can change the final amount. Also distinguish a query allowance from a device allowance: unlimited devices do not mean unlimited monthly queries on the NextDNS Free tier.

Performance: why there is no reliable universal winner

Control D’s homepage advertises a DNS resolution speed of 6.65 ms. It also displays a 99.98% malware block-rate figure attributed to Nexxwave, 2025. The reviewed material does not provide enough matched head-to-head methodology to use either number as proof that Control D is faster or more effective than NextDNS.

NextDNS describes its network as ultra-low latency and says it is embedded within carriers’ networks in major metropolitan areas. That is a provider description, not a direct comparison against Control D. DNS response time varies with a user’s location, ISP routing, resolver point of presence, current server load, cache state, and configuration. It is only one part of page-load time; a faster DNS lookup does not necessarily make every site feel faster.

Test both on the network that matters to you

  1. Use the same device and connection. Compare from the network where you expect to use the service, and avoid changing Wi-Fi, VPN, or mobile connections between tests.
  2. Keep the DNS protocol consistent where possible. Both list DoH and DoT, so use the same protocol for each comparison rather than comparing unlike setups.
  3. Match the filtering configuration. Enable comparable blocking categories, and note whether a test includes Control D redirection or other rules that may affect the lookup path.
  4. Repeat measurements at different times. A single lookup can reflect cache state or temporary routing and load conditions. Look for a consistent pattern instead of treating one result as decisive.
  5. Check actual use, not just latency. Confirm that the sites and apps you rely on resolve correctly and that the filtering behavior matches your needs.

There is no matched, sufficiently documented comparison here that justifies naming a speed winner for all regions or networks. A local test is more relevant than either provider’s standalone marketing figure.

What Control D’s redirection does—and does not do

Control D says its traffic-redirection feature can route selected traffic through proxy locations and mask the client IP address from destination websites, without a VPN. This is a distinct capability from ordinary DNS filtering and may suit someone who wants selected service or domain traffic routed through another location.

It should not be mistaken for a full VPN. The stated feature does not establish that all device traffic is encrypted and routed like a VPN connection, nor does it guarantee that a particular streaming service or website will accept the selected location. Treat it as selective redirection with service-specific behavior, not a promise of universal geo-unblocking.

Common setup and decision pitfalls

  • Assuming every business feature is personal. Control D’s extended protocol list, SIEM streaming, multi-tenancy, and retention figures come from business material. Confirm personal-plan availability.
  • Leaving an old resolver active. A device or router can still use another DNS path if its settings, browser, operating system, or network overrides the intended configuration. Verify which resolver is answering before judging filtering.
  • Testing unlike profiles. Different blocklists, schedules, rewrites, or redirection rules make a speed or blocking comparison inconclusive.
  • Reading a malware percentage as a universal benchmark. The 99.98% figure is attributed to Nexxwave, 2025, and has no matched comparison context in the cited material.
  • Expecting DNS filtering to fix every application. A domain rule can affect name resolution, but it does not establish that every advertisement, tracker, or in-app connection will behave identically.
  • Using the free tier without monitoring queries. After NextDNS Free reaches 300,000 monthly queries, it continues as standard non-blocking DNS, so the expected protection can change mid-month.

Which service should you choose?

  • Start with NextDNS if you want to try a free tier, need a published personal price, or value a wide selection of filters and explicit choices for log retention and data region.
  • Consider Control D if scheduled profiles, service-level rules, or redirecting selected traffic through proxy locations are central to your setup.
  • For a business deployment, compare endpoint pricing, management features, retention terms, and protocol requirements. Control D’s SMB price and business feature list are not directly comparable with a consumer subscription.
  • If privacy is decisive, inspect the exact plan’s logging controls and applicable policy rather than treating encrypted DNS alone as a complete privacy guarantee.
  • If speed is decisive, test both services from your own location with the same protocol and setup; the available figures do not support a global ranking.

Bottom line

NextDNS is the clearer fit for a personal user who wants a free starting point, published personal pricing, broad filtering, and granular optional-log controls. Control D stands out when profiles, schedules, and selective proxy-location redirection matter more. Check the current plan details for the features and price that apply to your use, then judge performance on your own network rather than relying on unmatched provider claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Control D better than NextDNS?

Neither is better for every use. NextDNS is the stronger starting point for published personal pricing, a query-limited free tier, broad filtering, and detailed optional-log controls. Control D is more distinctive if you need scheduled profiles, service rules, or selective proxy-location redirection.

Does Control D work like a VPN?

No. Control D describes selective traffic redirection through proxy locations that can mask the client IP from destination websites. That does not establish full-device VPN encryption or guaranteed access to every geo-restricted service.

How much does NextDNS cost?

The published Free plan is £0 with 300,000 queries per month. Pro is listed at £1.79 monthly or £17.90 yearly, with unlimited queries, devices, and configurations. Prices are shown in GBP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when NextDNS Free reaches its query limit?

The service continues answering DNS requests as standard, non-blocking DNS. It does not simply stop name resolution, but the blocking protection no longer applies in the same way.

What is Control D’s price?

The reviewed personal-use page does not state a personal price. Control D’s business page lists SMB pricing at $2 per endpoint per month, which should not be presented as an individual or family subscription price.

Which service has better privacy?

The answer depends on the exact settings and plan. NextDNS documents selectable logging, retention from one hour to two years or no logging, and four jurisdiction choices. Control D describes its data processing in its policy and lists business retention of 30 days for raw queries and up to one year for analytics. These are vendor statements, not an independent matched audit.

Which DNS service is faster?

There is no reliable universal winner in the documented information. Control D advertises 6.65 ms resolution speed, while NextDNS describes an ultra-low-latency network, but neither figure is a matched comparison across the same regions and networks. Test both locally using the same protocol and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do both services support encrypted DNS?

Yes. NextDNS lists DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS. Control D’s business pricing material lists DoH, DoT, DoQ, DoH3, and legacy DNS; verify which protocols your specific personal plan supports.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: NextDNS is the safer default for a personal user seeking clear pricing and broad filtering controls. Choose Control D when scheduled profiles or selective traffic redirection are the deciding features, and verify plan terms before subscribing.
