To translate MDN Web Docs into Spanish, contribute through the mdn/translated-content repository. First check that the page needs translation or updating, then follow MDN’s translation and contribution guidance, preserve technical identifiers, and submit your changes in a pull request for review. Spanish is an active MDN locale.
Start with MDN’s Spanish localization guidance
MDN’s localization page lists Spanish among its active locales and directs contributors to the translated-content repository. Read the repository’s contribution guide and translation guidelines before editing. MDN’s guidance calls for enough English comprehension to understand the source and fluency in the target locale; small typo fixes are an exception to the English prerequisite.

If you need help coordinating, MDN lists Spanish community channels including Matrix (#mdn-l10n-es), Telegram (MDN l10n ES), and Discord (#spanish) on its localization page.

Check whether you are translating a page or updating one
Before starting, inspect the Spanish target page, its English source, and related repository issues or pull requests. This helps you avoid duplicating active work and tells you whether to create a translation or bring an existing one up to date. Page-specific requests can coordinate contributors; for example, an April 2026 issue about Web/HTML/Guides asked people intending to work on it to comment on the issue. That is a page-level example, not a rule that applies to every Spanish translation.

For a new translation
- Find the English page in the
mdn/contentrepository and identify its corresponding path under the Spanish locale inmdn/translated-content. - Copy the page into the corresponding locale directory, following the existing file structure rather than creating a new format.
- Prepare the front matter: remove unnecessary fields, translate
titleandshort-titlewhen present, and addl10n.sourceCommitwith the latest commit that modified the English source file. - Translate the content according to MDN’s guidelines and Spanish conventions. Keep API names, property and method names, variables, and Kumascript macros intact.
- Commit and push your branch, then open a pull request for review.
The guide’s walkthrough illustrates the process with French paths. Use it as a workflow example, but follow the matching Spanish locale path for your page.
For an existing Spanish translation
- Compare the Spanish page with the current English source, including the page’s history, to identify changes that need to be reflected.
- Add sections that are missing from the Spanish version and remove material that no longer appears in the source.
- Update
l10n.sourceCommitto the latest commit that modified the English page. - Check internal links: Spanish pages should use
/es/rather than/en-US/where the link points to a localized page. - Preserve technical names and code, including API identifiers and macros, while applying Spanish conventions.
- Submit your changes in a pull request for review.
MDN’s contribution guide says its detailed instructions for updating translations are unfinished, so the exact work depends on the page and its history. The Spanish localization issue checklist offers a concrete example of update tasks; use the repository’s current guidance and the target page’s differences to make the right changes.
Choose a contribution method and submit for review
For a small edit, GitHub’s web interface can guide you through creating a fork and branch. For substantial translation work, the guide describes using local clones of the upstream content and translated-content repositories. In either case, commit and push your changes, then open a pull request so maintainers can review them. Follow the repository’s current contribution instructions for the exact submission process.
How large is MDN’s documentation?
MDN Web Docs described its English documentation as close to 14,000 pages on a page last modified May 31, 2026. MDN also says its content is translated into eight maintained locales. These are overall figures, not a count or coverage estimate for Spanish; they do not indicate how many pages have Spanish translations or how current those pages are.
