Continuous Shooting Explained: How Burst Mode Works and When to Use It

Continuous shooting captures successive still photos, but autofocus, burst length, and sustained speed depend on your camera and settings.

Continuous shooting—also called burst mode—takes successive still photos while you hold or activate the shutter. It helps capture brief moments in sports, wildlife, and changing expressions, but a high frame rate does not guarantee sharp focus or the right moment. The useful burst length depends on the camera, settings, file format, and conditions.

What continuous shooting does

In a single-frame drive mode, each shutter activation takes one photo. In continuous shooting, the camera records a series of still frames while the shutter control is held or otherwise activated. The camera’s name for the setting and its controls vary by model, so consult the camera manual for the exact steps.

Burst shooting is useful when the action is brief or its timing is hard to predict. It gives you a sequence to choose from; it cannot ensure that a frame is in focus, well composed, or decisive.

How to set up a burst for moving subjects

  1. Select continuous drive mode. Look for a release-mode or drive-mode setting in the camera’s controls or menus. Names and paths differ; use the manual for your model.
  2. Choose an autofocus mode that can follow movement. Continuous autofocus or subject tracking may help, but autofocus behavior during a burst depends on the camera’s AF mode and drive settings. Check whether your chosen combination adjusts focus between frames.
  3. Set exposure for the motion and look you want. Choose a shutter speed appropriate for the subject’s movement and the amount of blur you intend. Adjust aperture and ISO to achieve the exposure you need; there is no single shutter speed that suits every subject.
  4. Take short, deliberate bursts. Start shooting just before the key moment and release the shutter afterward. This practical approach can leave more buffer capacity for the next action and reduce near-duplicate frames to review.

Why a burst slows down

A camera temporarily holds image data in a memory buffer while it writes files to the memory card. If the buffer fills faster than the camera can clear it, the burst may slow or pause. Nikon describes this buffer function in its D3500 manual; its Z30 manual notes that actual buffer capacity varies with settings and shooting conditions.

File format matters: on some cameras, RAW files can result in a shorter burst than smaller files. The difference is model-dependent, so check the figures for your camera and intended format. A compatible memory card also matters to the write process, but choosing a faster card does not raise the camera’s specified maximum frame rate. Confirm supported card types and performance in the camera manual.

What burst-rate figures do—and do not—tell you

A maximum frames-per-second figure describes a camera under stated conditions; it is not a promise that every burst will sustain that rate or continue indefinitely. Performance can vary with the camera, lens, file format, settings, and shooting conditions. For example, Sony’s ILCE-7M5 continuous-shooting guide gives speed and buffer information tied to conditions including the lens, autofocus, and file format. Nikon’s D780 release-mode manual likewise presents rates with operating conditions.

A separate model-specific example: Nikon’s D3500 manual says up to 100 photographs can be taken in succession under its described conditions, with an exception for shutter speeds of 4 seconds or slower in S or M mode. That figure applies to the D3500 and those conditions, not to cameras generally.

How to compare cameras for action photography

When evaluating a camera for a particular kind of action, compare the performance you can use rather than relying on the largest advertised rate:

  • Continuous autofocus behavior: Verify whether focus can adjust between frames with your chosen drive and AF settings. Sony’s autofocus support guidance illustrates that behavior depends on model and configuration.
  • Buffer capacity and clearing: Look for how many frames the camera can hold in relevant conditions and how long it takes to resume full-speed shooting.
  • Compatible memory cards: Confirm the card formats and performance the camera supports.

Drive-mode options also differ by camera, as Sony notes in its drive-mode guidance. Compare manufacturer specifications and manuals for the exact body and settings you intend to use; figures from different models are not directly comparable unless their conditions match.

Camera-dependent details to check

Electronic and mechanical shutter behavior, flicker, rolling-shutter distortion, flash restrictions, and the exact menu path are not uniform across cameras. Consult your model’s manual for these details rather than assuming a setting or result applies to every camera.
