A virtual machine runs its own guest operating system on virtualized hardware. A container isolates application processes while sharing the host’s operating-system kernel. Docker provides tools to package and run containers, and Docker Compose helps manage applications built from multiple containers. These technologies work at different layers, and teams often run containers inside virtual machines.
What is the difference between a container and a virtual machine?
The key difference is what gets virtualized and what each workload shares. A hypervisor presents virtual hardware to a virtual machine (VM), which then runs a guest operating system. A container isolates an application process and its files, but uses the host’s kernel rather than running a separate kernel of its own.

| Decision factor | Virtual machine | Container |
|---|---|---|
| What it provides | A virtualized machine with its own guest OS | An isolated application process and its required files |
| Operating system | Runs a separate guest OS | Shares the host kernel |
| Typical OS overhead | Includes the guest OS | Usually less OS overhead because each container does not run its own kernel |
| Isolation boundary | VM boundary and guest OS | Process and container boundary; isolation depends on configuration |
| Typical fit | Workloads needing a separate OS environment or VM boundary | Applications that can share a kernel and benefit from packaged deployment |
That difference in architecture explains why containers are commonly described as more lightweight: they avoid the overhead of a separate guest OS for each workload. It does not establish that any particular containerized application will be faster or cheaper. Performance and cost depend on the workload, host, configuration, storage, and operational needs. Neither architecture is categorically safer; container isolation depends in part on how it is configured. Docker’s container overview, Microsoft Learn’s comparison, and Google Cloud’s comparison explain the distinction and trade-offs.

What is Docker?
Docker is a platform and set of tools for building, distributing, and running container images. An image is a packaged template containing an application’s filesystem and configuration. When an image is started, it becomes a running container: an isolated process environment for the application.

- Container: A running instance created from an image.
- Docker Engine: Docker’s client-server platform for building and running containers.
Docker describes containers as “isolated processes for each of your app’s components.” That description captures the container’s role without implying that it has its own kernel. See Docker’s explanation of containers and its overview of Docker.
What does Docker Compose do?
Docker Compose is a client tool for defining and managing applications made up of multiple containers. It is useful when an application’s components—such as an application process and a separate supporting service—need to be described and run together. Compose does not replace Docker Engine: it works with Docker’s container tooling to manage that multi-container application.

Can containers and virtual machines be used together?
Yes. A VM can provide the infrastructure host, and a container runtime can run multiple containers on that VM. This lets a team use a VM’s separate guest-OS environment while packaging and deploying application components as containers. Cloud deployments commonly use this combination; Google Cloud describes VMs hosting Kubernetes clusters for containerized workloads. Google Cloud’s overview and Docker’s container guide discuss VMs and containers together.

The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
- Choose a VM when the workload needs its own guest operating system or a VM boundary.
- Choose containers when the application can share the host kernel and you want to package and deploy its processes in containers.
- Use both when a VM is the desired infrastructure environment and containers are the preferred way to deploy applications on it.
Account for operating-system requirements, isolation configuration, resource overhead, deployment workflow, and persistent storage. Containers can use configured storage, but packaging an application as a container does not by itself settle how its data should persist. Docker documents configurable isolation for networking, storage, and underlying subsystems in its Docker overview; Microsoft Learn also addresses persistence in its containers-versus-VMs comparison.
