A container isolates an application process while sharing its host’s kernel. A virtual machine (VM) runs a whole guest operating system with its own kernel. Serverless changes a different part of the picture: a provider manages the execution environment, and you supply code or, in some services, a container image. These are different boundaries and responsibilities—not three mutually exclusive ways to package an application.
The simplest mental model
Think of a VM as a guest computer, a container as an isolated application process, and a serverless function as code run inside an environment managed by a service. Each label answers a different question: what is isolated, which kernel the workload uses, or who manages the execution environment.

- VM: an operating-system boundary, including a guest kernel.
- Container: a process boundary, with the application’s files, that shares the host kernel.
- Serverless: a managed execution model in which a service provisions and manages the environment for code or an image.
What a container isolates
Docker describes a container as “an isolated process with all of the files it needs to run.” The process is isolated from other workloads, but containers on a host share that host’s kernel. A container therefore packages and separates an application process; it is not, by itself, a complete guest operating system.

That distinction matters when reasoning about security. A container boundary is not the same as giving every workload a separate guest kernel. Docker’s security guidance discusses kernel security, the Docker daemon’s attack surface, container configuration, and hardening as relevant considerations. The practical security of a deployment depends on those controls and its configuration; the word “container” alone does not establish a security ranking.

What a VM adds
A VM represents an entire operating system, including its own kernel, hardware drivers, programs, and applications, as Docker explains. That guest operating system is the key difference from a container’s shared-kernel model.
VMs and containers commonly appear together. Cloud machines are typically VMs, and a VM can host a container runtime and multiple containerized applications. In that arrangement, the VM supplies the guest operating system boundary while containers organize and isolate application processes within it.

What serverless changes
Serverless describes who manages the execution environment, not a promise that no servers exist. With AWS Lambda, the service creates an isolated execution environment for function code. The documented lifecycle includes initialization, invocation, and shutdown; an available environment may be reused for another invocation.
The developer supplies code and its dependencies, while the service manages the execution environment. This is a different operational arrangement from directly managing a VM or a container host. It does not mean that every serverless product behaves identically: the exact lifecycle and capabilities depend on the service.

How the three models fit together
| Model | Primary boundary | Kernel relationship | Who manages the execution environment? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Container | Isolated application process and its required files | Shares the host kernel | The operator manages the host or platform that runs it |
| VM | Guest operating system | Has its own guest kernel | The operator manages the guest OS; the underlying machine may be provided as a cloud VM |
| Serverless function | Service-managed environment for code and invocations | Implementation details vary by service; the cited Lambda documentation establishes an isolated execution environment, not a guest-kernel comparison | The provider manages the execution environment |
These categories can overlap. A VM can host containers. AWS Lambda can deploy function code packaged as a container image while Lambda still manages the execution environment. An image describes packaging; it does not make the platform’s operating model identical to running that image on a VM you manage.
How to choose what to think about first
Start with the boundary you need
Ask whether the decision is about packaging an application process, providing a whole guest operating system, or handing execution-environment management to a service. If the question is about isolation, distinguish the shared host kernel of containers from a VM’s guest kernel. If the question is about operations, identify which machine or environment your team must manage.

Then consider the workload’s operating shape
A long-running application or service and an event-driven function can imply different operational choices, but neither label alone determines suitability. Check the actual product’s behavior and requirements for the workload rather than assuming every container, VM, or serverless service has the same limits or capabilities.

Container images can package applications for container platforms and can also be used to deploy Lambda functions. That overlap is useful, but it does not erase the distinction between managing a container host and using a provider-managed function environment.

What this comparison cannot rank universally
There is no general cost, performance, or security winner established by these definitions. Results depend on workload, configuration, and the specific services being compared. A meaningful comparison needs a defined deployment and workload; the category names alone do not support numerical savings, speed claims, or an across-the-board security ranking.
