Containerizing OmniGet or Omnigent: What Docker Actually Covers for Headless Media Pipelines

"Omniget" can mean two different tools. Here is what Omnigent's Docker deployment documents, what OmniGet's docs describe, and what a containerized media pipeline would still require you to build yourself.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither project’s official documentation describes a containerized, headless media ingestion pipeline. “Omniget” can refer to two different tools, and they do not share a deployment model. Omnigent is an agent platform with a documented Docker Compose server stack. OmniGet is a desktop media downloader that uses yt-dlp and FFmpeg, and its documentation does not describe a Docker setup. As of October 2026, what you can containerize with official backing is the Omnigent server. Building a media pipeline on top of it is something you would have to design and verify yourself.

Which project does “Omniget” mean?

Before choosing a deployment approach, settle which tool you are actually running. The two names are close enough to cause confusion, and their instructions should not be mixed.

Attribute Omnigent OmniGet
What it is Agent platform Media-downloading desktop application
Documented core tooling Agents with local Python tools; tool sandboxes can run in containers yt-dlp fetches media; FFmpeg joins video and audio
Documented Docker deployment Yes: a Docker Compose server stack (Docker deployment README) Not described in the onboarding documentation (OmniGet onboarding documentation)
Media-ingestion function Not documented Yes, as a desktop workflow

If your goal is headless media ingestion, the OmniGet documentation describes the downloader’s workflow, but not a headless or containerized mode. The Omnigent documentation covers headless server setup, but not media ingestion. Keep the two sets of steps separate.

What the Omnigent Docker deployment provides

The Omnigent Docker README describes the server as a self-contained stack. In its words: “Run the server as a self-contained Docker stack on any host: your laptop, a VPS, an EC2 instance, a home server, anywhere docker compose runs.” The official deployment overview also points to Docker Compose as the self-hosting path.

The stack has two main services:

  • Postgres for the database.
  • The Omnigent server image, which runs the platform itself.

The documented flow has four stages: change into the deployment directory, bootstrap secrets, start the stack, and check the server logs. The README does not publish the exact command for each step in the text reviewed for this article, so follow the README directly rather than relying on a copied command.

Persistence and the destructive reset

Database state and artifacts live in the documented persistent storage: Postgres data and an artifact-data volume. The admin credentials path is anchored on this persistent state, so it survives docker compose restart.

The reset path is the one to watch. docker compose down -v deletes the volume and everything in it, including the admin credentials and stored artifacts. Use plain docker compose down when you want to stop the stack and keep its data.

Headless first-admin setup

The normal setup path is a Create-admin form in the web interface. If you cannot use that form, for example on a server you reach only over SSH, the README documents pre-seeding the admin password through the environment variable OMNIGENT_ACCOUNTS_INIT_ADMIN_PASSWORD.

Treat this as first-run setup only. Long-term authentication for shared deployments is a separate task. The deployment guide documents native OIDC for shared deployments and recommends HTTPS for any public use.

Keeping host dependencies out of the way

The Docker README says the project publishes a separate host image for remote sandboxes. Its purpose is to avoid installing dependencies inside the sandbox at every startup. The image includes the Omnigent install and selected runtime tools.

This is a qualitative design rationale. The sources do not give an image size, a startup-time measurement, or a quantified reduction in host footprint. Do not assume a specific speedup or disk saving until you measure it on your own hardware.

Installation modes also have different host requirements. The native CLI installation requires Python 3.12 or later, Node.js 22 LTS, and tmux, according to the Omnigent installation guide. That list applies to the native CLI. The sources do not state the host packages required for the Docker server deployment, so the Docker path should not be assumed to need the same ones.

Installation mode Documented host requirements Source
Native CLI Python 3.12+, Node.js 22 LTS, tmux Omnigent installation guide
Docker Compose server Not stated beyond running docker compose Docker deployment README

Container runtimes for tool sandboxes

Containers play a second role in Omnigent, separate from the server stack. In the agent YAML specification, a local Python tool can declare a container image. Docker is the default runtime, and Podman is also accepted.

Setting Scope Precedence

OMNIGENT_CONTAINER_RUNTIME Platform-wide default Applies when no per-agent setting exists

This setting controls where tools run. It is not a substitute for the server’s Compose stack, and the specification does not compare Docker and Podman on features or performance.

Where a media pipeline would fit, and what is missing

A containerized media pipeline built on these pieces would combine an Omnigent server in Compose with a tool sandbox that declares an image containing yt-dlp and FFmpeg. The sources do not document this combination for either project. They also do not show Omnigent calling yt-dlp or FFmpeg, and they do not show OmniGet running headless or in a container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OmniGet documentation describes the desktop workflow in one line: “yt-dlp fetches the media and FFmpeg joins the video and audio.” That describes the downloader’s behavior, not a server-side pipeline.

No benchmarks exist in the official material for either project. There are no throughput, storage-growth, or startup-time figures for a media workload, so any performance claim about a containerized pipeline would be unsupported.

Practical sequence if you want to try this

  1. Confirm which project you intend to run. If you need a downloader, you need OmniGet’s documented desktop workflow. If you need the Omnigent server, follow its Docker README.
  2. Deploy the Omnigent Compose stack, and set OMNIGENT_ACCOUNTS_INIT_ADMIN_PASSWORD if you cannot use the Create-admin form.
  3. Confirm that the artifact-data volume persists after a docker compose restart before you store anything you care about.
  4. If you want tool sandboxes in containers, set the runtime per agent or with OMNIGENT_CONTAINER_RUNTIME, and test a sandbox image you have built yourself.
  5. Measure image size, startup time, and disk use on your own hardware. The official material does not provide these numbers.

Test any media-related tool in an isolated environment first. Neither project’s documentation covers how media downloads interact with a containerized server, so expect to troubleshoot those interactions yourself.
