To reach PayPal directly, start at its Contact Us page, describe your problem to the PayPal Assistant or pick the closest topic, and then use whatever support option PayPal offers for that issue, which may include live chat or a phone call. Once a case exists, manage it in the Resolution Center. Conversations live in Message Center.

Start at Contact Us
PayPal’s Contact Us page is the entry point for most questions. It sorts support by topic. The categories include password and account access, payments, profile setup, disputes and limitations, business solutions, credit, and cards. The channels you see depend on the issue and on your account, so the page is the authority on what is available to you at that moment.
- Open PayPal’s Contact Us page on the US site.
- Type your problem into the PayPal Assistant, or select the topic that matches it most closely.
- If the Assistant cannot resolve the question, it can connect you to a live agent. Use the chat or phone option it offers.
- Before you end the session, note the reference or conversation details so you can find the exchange again in Message Center.
PayPal does not commit to one universal phone number or one set of hours across all users. Do not rely on a phone number copied from a third-party site. Use only the number or chat option shown in your own PayPal help flow.

The fastest route depends on what kind of problem you have. The table compares the five situations most readers face.

Use Contact Us for anything that is not yet a case. Account access questions, such as password resets and profile changes, belong here. If a problem involves money that has already moved, move on to the Resolution Center rather than continuing a chat.

Previous conversations
Message Center stores your chat history and lets you start a new conversation. Use it when you need to refer back to what an agent told you, or when you are following up in writing.

In the Resolution Center, report the problem on the relevant payment. Where it applies, you can communicate with the other party inside the case. Follow the case status there. The Resolution Center handles claims and account limitations as well as transaction issues, so it is the right place for a restricted account as well as a disputed charge.

To check where a dispute or claim stands, open the Resolution Center and look at the case’s current status rather than waiting for a general support reply.
Payments you did not authorize
Report an unauthorized payment promptly through the Resolution Center. Before you do, check whether the transaction is a payment from a family member or an automatic payment you set up, since either can look unfamiliar. If it is not, report it. PayPal says it will email you within 10 days after you file the report.

Seller disputes: timing you cannot miss
PayPal’s US seller-dispute instructions set out the time limits that matter most in a purchase problem:
- Escalation waiting period: PayPal says it often requires at least 7 days from the payment date before a purchase dispute can be escalated to a claim.
- Automatic closure: A dispute closes automatically after 20 days unless it is escalated.
- No reopening: A closed dispute cannot be reopened or escalated, so a missed window means starting over, if a new dispute is even possible.
These figures are procedural windows set by PayPal’s dispute process. They are not measures of how quickly support responds. Do not let a case deadline pass while you wait for a general support reply. If you have a dispute open, check it in the Resolution Center first.

When the problem is a dispute with PayPal itself
If customer service has not resolved a disagreement with PayPal, the US Notice of Dispute page describes a separate formal process. It requires you to complete the notice and sign it personally. You then send it by certified mail to the legal department address listed on that page. The page was last updated August 24, 2026.
The notice process is a legal step rather than a support request. The User Agreement describes arbitration as a possible later step. Read the current User Agreement and the Notice of Dispute page before you send anything, because the terms may have changed since this guide was written.
Keep these points in mind
- Begin with Contact Us, then move to Message Center for conversations and the Resolution Center for cases.
- Chat and phone options depend on the issue, so use the options your own help flow displays.
- Seller disputes close automatically after 20 days unless escalated, and a closed dispute cannot be reopened.
- Unauthorized payments should be reported promptly, and PayPal says it emails within 10 days of the report.
- Formal notice by certified mail is a separate, legal route for disputes that support has not resolved in the US.
