Contabo is a workable host for a self-managed WireGuard VPN, provided you treat it as a rented Linux server rather than a finished VPN service. Its one-click WireGuard + WGDashboard offer installs the VPN and a web dashboard for managing peers, which removes most of the installation work. Everything after that is yours to run: the application, the firewall rules that let your tunnel connect, and the question of whether the network path performs well from your location.
This assessment draws on Contabo’s own Help Center articles, its WireGuard product page and its blog, along with a small set of public user posts. It is not a hands-on speed test or a WireGuard benchmark, and it does not measure throughput or tunnel stability on Contabo’s network.

What the one-click offer actually installs
Contabo describes WireGuard as an open-source VPN and pairs it with WGDashboard, a web interface for creating peers and onboarding clients with QR codes. The add-on is Docker-based and runs on Ubuntu LTS 24.04. According to Contabo’s setup article, the stack also includes a Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate and Caddy.
The practical consequence is that you are buying a server with a preinstalled application, not a consumer VPN subscription. Accounts, keys, and client configurations live on your instance, and you decide who gets access.

Plan sizing: documented minimums and recommendations
Contabo’s WireGuard + WGDashboard help article lists system requirements for the add-on. The table below reproduces those figures, which the article names alongside Cloud VPS 10 and Cloud VDS S as the eligible VPS and VDS options.

Deploying the add-on
For a new order, the sequence Contabo documents is short. Expect the server to be ready in up to 30 minutes, not instantly.

- Open Contabo’s WireGuard Server product page and choose the plan you intend to run. Check the location list at the point of order, because availability is product-specific.
- Choose a location and set a password. Contabo uses this one password for both the VPS and the application, so use a long, unique value.
- Wait for installation and activation. Contabo states the application may take up to 30 minutes to install and activate.
- Sign in to WGDashboard and link an email address to the account before you rely on the server. Contabo warns that if you have not done this and lose access, recovery may require reinstalling the application, which can cause data loss.
- Create peers in WGDashboard and hand each client its configuration, typically by scanning the QR code on the client device.
For an existing instance, Contabo documents reinstalling it with an application image through the customer panel. Treat that as a rebuild: anything stored on the instance should be backed up first.

Where Contabo’s support stops
The most important distinction in Contabo’s documentation is between infrastructure support and application operations. Contabo supports the VPS itself and the initial add-on setup. Help with WireGuard configuration is directed to WireGuard’s own resources. Its setup article puts the boundary directly:
“Please note that after the installation, you are responsible for maintaining, updating, and troubleshooting the application.” (Contabo Help Center, “What is WireGuard + WGDashboard and how do I use it on Contabo?”)

- Diagnosing tunnel problems, such as a peer that no longer completes a handshake.
- Managing peer keys and revoking clients you no longer trust.
- Keeping backups of dashboard data and client configurations, and knowing how to restore them.
- Deciding how you respond when something goes wrong, since Contabo’s support will not run your VPN for you.
The offer lowers the cost of getting a server running. It does not reduce the operational work of keeping one running.

Network and firewall caveats that affect a working tunnel
Bandwidth: “unlimited” with a fair-use qualifier
Contabo’s bandwidth article states that there is no default bandwidth limit. The same article says its fair-use policy applies, and that exceptionally high or disruptive use may be throttled. It lists VPS and VDS port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, depending on the product. Read the port speed on the specific SKU you are ordering, and read the current policy wording before you plan a workload that moves large volumes of data.
Firewall rules must allow the WireGuard port
Contabo’s VPS and VDS firewall is separate from any firewall running inside the operating system. When an instance is assigned to an active Contabo firewall, incoming traffic is blocked by default until configured rules allow it. Contabo’s documentation identifies UDP as the protocol used by VPN services, so the rule you need is a UDP rule for the port your WireGuard instance listens on.
The port is not universal. It is set by your WireGuard configuration, so check the ListenPort value in the interface configuration and match the firewall rule to it. If you also enable a firewall inside the operating system, it needs the same allowance. A tunnel that handshakes locally but never connects from outside is often a blocked port at one of these two layers.

Contabo’s product page advertises always-on DDoS protection for VPS plans. Treat this as the provider’s own statement. It does not guarantee application uptime, cover every attack type, or replace hardening of the server and the VPN configuration.

Private networking is a different feature
Contabo also documents private networking as an isolated Layer 2 LAN with unmetered traffic between instances on that network. Availability differs by product. This is optional infrastructure for connecting servers to each other. It is not the encrypted WireGuard tunnel between your clients and the server, and enabling it does not change how your VPN traffic is protected.
Checking the tunnel from the command line
Contabo’s manual guide describes wg-quick for bringing a WireGuard interface up and down, and wg show for inspecting it. On a server where the interface configuration is named wg0.conf, the basic commands are:
sudo wg-quick up wg0brings the interface up from its configuration file.sudo wg showlists the interface, its listening port, and each peer. A recent latest-handshake time indicates that a peer has connected recently.sudo wg-quick down wg0takes the interface down.
WGDashboard manages interface configuration itself, so check which tool owns the configuration before editing it by hand. Mixing manual changes with dashboard-managed settings is a common way to lose a working setup.
What user reports show, and how much weight they deserve
Public feedback on Contabo is mixed. On Trustpilot, the recent accounts include praise for price, ease of use and reliability, alongside reports of poor performance and connectivity difficulty. On Reddit’s r/VPS, one 2026 account describes unexpected disk I/O problems on a low-cost VPS under a search workload, and a September 2026 thread contains comments that describe satisfactory use alongside performance variability.

These posts have clear limits. They are self-selected, they are anecdotal, and most concern general VPS workloads rather than WireGuard throughput or tunnel stability. They do not show that Contabo is representative of the typical experience, and no aggregate rating is used here. What they do support is a practical step: test the server from the locations and networks your clients actually use, and measure latency and sustained transfer rather than relying on the headline port speed.
Pricing, locations and contract terms
Contabo’s WireGuard product page displays effective monthly prices tied to a 24-month subscription, and it promotes several plans. Those figures are promotional in the sense that they depend on the commitment term shown on the page at the time you view it. Do not assume they represent the renewal rate or the price after the term ends, and confirm the exact figures on the order page.
The same page claims nine regions and eleven data-center locations. Confirm that the location you need is offered for the product you choose, since that claim is Contabo’s and is not something this assessment verified. Cancellation and refund terms are not covered by the sources used here, so read the contract before purchase.
When comparing plans within Contabo, use the same checklist for each: CPU allocation, RAM, storage, port speed, location availability and the price term. Marketing labels such as “personal use” or “remote teams” do not indicate what a plan can sustain under load.
Who this setup suits
- A good fit: you want a self-run WireGuard server without building the Docker and dashboard stack yourself, you are comfortable with basic Linux administration and firewall rules, and your clients sit near a Contabo location you can test against.
- A poor fit: you need a managed VPN service with provider-supported configuration help, you need a guaranteed throughput figure for a heavy workload, or you cannot take on patching, backups and key management.
The Bottom Line
Contabo is a sensible, low-friction host for a self-managed WireGuard server, and its one-click install is clearly documented. Whether it is the right choice depends on two things this assessment could not establish: the throughput and stability you get from your own location, and how the fair-use policy plays out at your traffic level. Run a trial period or a short-term order from the locations your clients use before committing to a long subscription.
