Contabo vs A Small Orange (2026): Which Web Host Wins?

Contabo and A Small Orange serve different needs: Contabo's VPS servers you administer versus A Small Orange's provider-managed shared hosting. Here is how to choose, and what to check on price, uptime and refunds.

Neither provider wins outright on the evidence available in early October 2026. The two sell different things: Contabo’s website-hosting material centres on Cloud VPS servers where you control the configuration, while A Small Orange’s shared-hosting documentation describes an account where the provider handles server administration and security updates. The right choice depends first on how much server work you want to do yourself. Price and resource comparisons come after that, and they need to be made on the exact plans you are considering, because the public pages do not settle current plan availability, renewal prices or resource caps for a like-for-like match.

Which provider fits your situation

Choose Contabo if you can administer a VPS

Contabo’s website-hosting VPS page targets a range of sites, from personal blogs and portfolios through small businesses, online stores, higher-traffic sites and web applications. It also states that basic server administration, command-line work and web-technology knowledge can help. If you are comfortable installing and maintaining the operating system, web server, database and security patches yourself, a VPS gives you more direct control over the environment than shared hosting does.

Choose A Small Orange if you want the provider to run the server

A Small Orange’s shared-hosting overview states: “With shared hosting the job of managing the server, installing server software, and doing security updates belong to A Small Orange.” The same page positions shared plans for sites expecting minimal to average traffic, such as personal sites, blogs, small businesses, small shops and event websites, and it names cPanel and 24/7 support as part of that model. For a modest site run by someone who does not want to touch server software, this is the more relevant option.

Choose neither by default for shops and business-critical sites

For higher-traffic stores or workloads where downtime is costly, the comparison has to be made tier against tier. A Small Orange lists managed (Clementine), business and reseller products alongside its Cloud VPS and dedicated servers, so the closest match to a Contabo VPS may be a different A Small Orange product than its shared plan. Compare backups, recovery procedures, support commitments and resource limits on both sides before deciding.

How the two compare side by side

Contabo: what the VPS offer covers

Contabo presents Cloud VPS and dedicated or bare-metal servers as its central products, with listed locations, support, starting prices and an uptime figure on its homepage. The VPS page is the more detailed of the two and is the one to read for hardware figures. Because the tier specifications and promotional prices are the parts most likely to change, check them on the live page on the day you buy rather than relying on a figure copied into an article.

A Small Orange: the product lineup

A Small Orange’s plan guide lists six product families. They serve different needs, so treat each as its own decision rather than a tier of one service:

  • Shared hosting: cPanel, Softaculous, FTP access and a Weebly website builder, with the provider managing the server.
  • Clementine managed hosting: a managed product for customers who want more hands-on service than shared accounts provide.
  • Reseller hosting: plans for reselling hosting, with WHM available.
  • Business hosting: a step up for larger sites.
  • Cloud VPS: virtual servers, with WHM available on the VPS tier.
  • Dedicated servers: single-tenant hardware, also with WHM available.

The guide mentions backups, monitoring, migration assistance, failover and server management for some categories. These features are not guaranteed across every plan, so check the feature list on the specific product you select.

Cost and contract terms

Contabo: compare the renewal, not the promotion

Contabo’s sample prices are labelled as applying for the first 24 months. A first-term price therefore tells you little about what you will pay later. Calculate a 24-month total using the renewal rate shown on the live page, and add any setup charges, taxes and currency conversion that apply to your region.

A Small Orange: month to month, with prorated credits

A Small Orange’s contract help page states: “You pay month to month and can cancel at any time.” Its help material also describes a prorated credit for eligible prepaid time after applicable discounts are applied. The credit mechanism matters if you buy a longer prepaid term, because the amount you recover depends on the discount structure of that term. The sources reviewed do not provide a current list of A Small Orange plan prices, so a price comparison should be built from the checkout page for each plan.

Uptime and refund claims

Uptime is a vendor claim on both sides

Contabo’s homepage advertises 99.996% uptime, and A Small Orange’s shared-hosting overview advertises 99.9%. Neither figure is independently measured in the material reviewed, and the Contabo excerpt does not define the measurement window. Treat both as the providers’ own statements, and quote them with that attribution. No independent performance test or uptime audit comparing the two was found, so neither figure supports a conclusion that one host is faster or more reliable.

A Small Orange’s 90-day guarantee has conditions

A Small Orange’s refund help page describes a 90-day money-back guarantee covering shared hosting, reseller packages, Cloud VPS and Hybrid plans. The guarantee is subject to exclusions and to first-account eligibility, so it does not apply to every purchase. Read the exclusions on the plan you choose before you rely on the guarantee as an exit route. Contabo’s refund terms were not stated in the page reviewed.

Control panels and platform

  • Linux hosting: A Small Orange uses cPanel.
  • Reseller, VPS and dedicated plans: WHM is provided alongside cPanel.
  • Windows hosting: Plesk is the control panel.

If you are migrating an existing site, the panel determines how much of your workflow carries over, so match it against your current host before choosing. Contabo’s control-panel options were not stated in the page reviewed, so ask the provider directly if the panel matters to your workflow.

Before you buy: what to check

  • Confirm the exact plan is orderable in your country or region, since availability varies.
  • Record the setup fee, first-term price and renewal price, with taxes and currency, for each provider.
  • Check the CPU, memory, storage, port speed and traffic rules on the live plan page.
  • For A Small Orange, read the exclusions and first-account rules that apply to the 90-day guarantee.
  • For A Small Orange, confirm which features (backups, monitoring, failover, migration help) your chosen plan includes.
  • For Contabo, decide whether you have the administration skills a VPS requires; if not, a managed A Small Orange plan is the better fit.

Publicly available pages reviewed in early October 2026 support the use-case split above, but they do not support a single winner for price, performance or service quality.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
