What snapshots and backups protect—and what they do not
A snapshot saves a VPS system state so you can roll back after a change. Contabo explicitly warns that a snapshot is not a backup. Its snapshot feature is a convenient rollback mechanism, not a downloadable copy you can store elsewhere or a guarantee that a failed server can be restored.

Auto Backup is a separate, daily off-server copy available as an add-on for eligible VPS families. It gives you another recovery path, but its retention is short and restoring it replaces the current VPS data. Neither feature maintains YouTube ingest during a VPS failure or restore. YouTube’s stream and the server’s recoverability are separate concerns.
Contabo and YouTube documentation cited below was accessed on 3 October 2026. Plan features and counts can change; confirm what is available for your VPS in the Control Panel before relying on it.

Which Contabo VPS plans include snapshots and Auto Backup?

These are features listed in Contabo’s VPS documentation. The provider describes Storage VPS as suited to workloads prioritizing capacity over peak I/O throughput; it uses SSD rather than NVMe, and Contabo recommends Cloud VPS with NVMe for extreme I/O throughput. That description does not make Storage VPS a required companion for streaming.
How Contabo snapshots work
Contabo’s snapshot help article says snapshots are managed through the Customer Control Panel and expire after 30 days. The exact deletion date appears in the panel. The number of retained snapshots depends on the plan, and snapshots use separate storage rather than the VPS disk. They cannot be downloaded.

Create a snapshot before a risky system or software change when your plan supports it, and give it a name that makes its purpose clear. Because it expires and cannot be downloaded, do not treat it as your only copy of configuration or source media.
How Auto Backup works and its restore limits
Contabo’s VPS Auto Backup documentation lists the add-on for Core VPS and Performance VPS. You can enable it at deployment or later. The first backup is full; later ones are incremental. Backups are scheduled daily, with at least eight hours between runs. You cannot choose the run time within the provider’s standard window or select the backup location.

- Up to 10 backups are retained, each for a maximum of 10 days; the oldest is deleted first when the cap is reached.
- Copies are stored in a Contabo data center separate from the VPS host. This protects the copy from failure of that host, but does not place it outside Contabo or in a region you choose.
- A restore is initiated for the original VPS through the Control Panel, overwrites its current data, and makes the VPS unavailable until completion.
- Restores cover the whole VPS; Contabo does not offer individual-file restore.
- Contabo says it ensures backup performance and accessibility, but does not guarantee recoverability or perform recovery for you.
These constraints matter for a live channel: a restore is a recovery operation, not a way to keep the existing ingest session running. Confirm that a backup has completed, and do not wait until an outage to discover how restoring affects your VPS.
Choose stream settings before choosing server capacity
There is no defensible universal “best Contabo plan” for a 24/7 stream without knowing the source video, resolution, frame rate, codec, encoding method, target bitrate, and the VPS’s measured CPU and network capacity. Choose the intended stream settings first, then test whether the actual server sustains them.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. It also recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health. For H.264, YouTube’s published bitrate ranges accessed on 3 October 2026 include:

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS port or route can sustain the bitrate. Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you plan to use; watch CPU or hardware-encoding load, outbound throughput, and YouTube stream health. A successful backup test and a successful sustained-stream test answer different questions.

A practical backup and recovery workflow
- Before a major change, create a snapshot if your plan supports it. Use the Customer Control Panel and label the snapshot with the system state or change it precedes. It is a rollback point, not your only backup.
- Enable Auto Backup if its limits fit your recovery needs. It is available on Core VPS and Performance VPS. After enabling it, check the Control Panel to confirm a backup has completed.
- Keep an independent copy of critical files. Store irreplaceable stream assets and configuration through a separately managed method, outside the VPS. Protect credentials and the YouTube stream key; do not leave secrets in public notes or an unprotected archive.
- Rehearse restoration or rebuilding away from a critical live period. A whole-VPS restore overwrites current data and takes the production VPS offline until completion. Document what you need to rebuild and verify that the separate copy is usable.
- Run a test stream at the intended settings. Check YouTube stream health and the VPS’s resource and network behavior before treating the machine as suitable for continuous operation.
This workflow combines Contabo’s documented snapshot and backup limits with YouTube’s advice to test and monitor. It does not imply that any specific recovery design or VPS configuration has been independently validated.
Common problems and what to check
- No snapshot or Auto Backup option appears: Check the VPS family and the selected plan in the Control Panel. Contabo’s current documentation lists neither feature for Storage VPS.
- A snapshot is no longer available: Snapshots expire after 30 days, and the panel shows the deletion date. Maintain another copy of important files rather than depending on an expired rollback point.
- You need one file, not a full restore: Auto Backup restores the whole VPS. Recover the needed file from your independently stored copy if available; Contabo does not document individual-file restore for this feature.
- The stream stops during a restore: The VPS is unavailable until the restore completes. Plan restoration outside a critical live window and account for restarting and checking the encoder afterward.
- The stream drops or reports poor health without a restore: Verify the ingest configuration and stream key, then check sustained VPS CPU or encoder capacity and outbound throughput against the chosen settings. YouTube advises testing and monitoring; its recommended bitrate range is not a capacity guarantee for your server.
- You cannot find a recent backup: Auto Backup runs daily, not continuously; confirm completion in the Control Panel and account for the maximum 10-day retention and 10-backup cap.
