Contabo VDS can be worth considering if your workload benefits from reserved CPU and memory, you are comfortable managing a server, and the price fits your budget. It is not a single-tenant machine, and one independent test of a Cloud VDS L found strong CPU and stability grades but weaker disk and network grades. Treat the service as a value-oriented option to validate against your own workload—not as a guaranteed performance or uptime outcome.
What Contabo VDS is—and what “dedicated” means
Contabo presents VDS as the top product line in its VPS family, positioned between a standard shared VPS and a bare-metal dedicated server. Its documentation calls the offering “Max Performance VPS”; the Customer Control Panel sells it as VDS, and the plan names retain the Cloud VDS prefix.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Contabo says each instance has CPU cores allocated exclusively to it and fully reserved RAM. The physical host, however, remains multi-tenant: this is not a promise that you receive an entire server. Contabo also counts vCores with AMD SMT enabled, at two vCores per physical core. Those details matter when comparing core counts with providers that define or allocate CPUs differently. #1 Best Overall
- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).

What independent performance testing says
VPSBenchmarks’ Cloud VDS L test
VPSBenchmarks bought and configured a Cloud VDS L instance and updated its trial on November 5, 2025. The tested server was in Lauterbourg, France, running Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS on KVM with an AMD EPYC 7282, 12 cores, and 48 GB RAM. It scored 57 overall: C for web performance, B for raw CPU, B for stability, D for disk I/O, and D for network. The provider was excluded from the rankings on that page. These grades describe that one configuration and location, not every current VDS plan or region. VPSBenchmarks’ Cloud VDS L trial.

The publisher’s suite includes web response and request-rate tests, Sysbench CPU, disk and memory tests, endurance testing, network transfers, and Yabs components such as Geekbench, Fio, and Iperf3. Its grades are relative to plans in its own comparison dataset. The mix of results is more useful than a blanket “fast” or “slow” label: compute and stability graded better than storage and networking in this particular test.

Do not substitute VPS results for VDS evidence
ThatMy.com reports a 54-day monitoring window and 99.91% uptime for a Cloud VPS S, not a VDS. Its measurements and disclosed commission-earning links are specific to that page and product tier; they do not establish VDS uptime or customer-wide experience. ThatMy.com’s Cloud VPS S review.
Features, management, and location options
Contabo’s VDS documentation lists NVMe storage, nested virtualization support for Proxmox VE, KVM, and XenServer, a network-level firewall, always-on network-level DDoS protection, a rescue system, a VNC console, and OS, one-click, and custom images. Management options include the control panel, API, CLI, cloud-init, and SSH-key injection.

Limitations to plan around
- No VDS snapshots or Auto Backup add-on: Arrange independent backups and test that you can restore them. Downloaded backup files can be kept on an external SSD, but a drive kept in the same place as the server is not an off-site backup.
- Changing product families requires migration: You cannot directly downgrade or convert between VPS families. Moving requires a new server, manual migration, and cancellation of the old server; the IP address changes.
- Storage changes are disruptive: Changing storage type or capacity requires a reinstall and erases data. Storage changes are arranged through support.
- Private networking is limited: It is provisioned manually through support and is available only to instances in the same region.
- “Unlimited” traffic has a fair-use qualification: Contabo says there is no default bandwidth cap, but it may throttle exceptionally high or disruptive usage to preserve fair access.
- Windows has restrictions: Windows Server is an add-on, Hyper-V does not run on VDS with Windows Server, and bringing your own Windows Server license is not permitted.
Who should consider Contabo VDS?
It may fit
- Technically confident users who can administer the operating system, applications, security, and backups themselves.
- Workloads that benefit from reserved CPU allocation and RAM, with plan sizes that suit their memory and storage needs.
- Buyers willing to benchmark from their own users’ locations and test real application behavior before relying on the server in production.
Look elsewhere or validate carefully
- Latency-sensitive or network-intensive production services that cannot tolerate an unsuitable route or inconsistent results.
- Teams that require built-in snapshots, an included automated backup feature, or a simple direct path to downgrade between product families.
- Anyone choosing primarily by advertised core count without checking CPU definitions, storage performance, network route, and total term cost.
How to compare it fairly with another provider
Use the same workload and geography for each candidate; headline core counts are not enough. Compare the total cost and commitment term, whether CPU and memory are shared or exclusively allocated, repeatable CPU and storage behavior under load, network latency and routes from your audience, backup and restore features, and how much administration and support you must provide. The available results do not establish a same-date, same-workload comparison across competitors, so they do not support naming a universal winner.
