The public material does not show how a given plan performs under your applications, and it does not establish how consistently uptime or support holds up over time. Treat the published specifications as a starting point and the user reports as questions to check.

Contabo’s Windows VPS page lists Windows Server configurations under its CLOUD VPS line, with six tiers from VPS 4 to VPS 18 (Contabo, Windows VPS Server). A separate Contabo remote-desktop example describes a Windows Server VPS 12 with 12 vCPU cores and 48 GB RAM. The two Contabo pages do not present the VPS 12 tier the same way, so confirm the specification, price and storage on the checkout screen before you rely on either one.

How the RDP setup works
Contabo describes the process in five high-level stages. Its remote desktop page does not give menu-by-menu instructions, so the list below reflects its outline rather than a click-through guide.
- Choose a server type (VPS, VDS or dedicated) and an operating system (Windows Server or Linux).
- Set up the server and install operating system updates.
- Enable and configure remote access.
- Secure the connection (see the checklist later in this article).
- Connect with a Remote Desktop client.
On a Windows computer, the built-in Remote Desktop Connection app is the usual RDP client. Remote access works only after the server is updated, reachable and protected, so the security step is part of setup rather than an optional add-on.

What the advertised price does not settle
A low introductory price is only the first number to check. Before you compare Contabo with another Windows RDP provider, confirm the following on the live checkout and terms pages:
- The renewal price that applies after the 24-month introductory term.
- The billing region and currency, and any tax added at checkout.
- Whether a Windows Server license is included in the plan price. This was not established for every plan or region in the sources reviewed.
- The storage type and size for the plan you select, along with the vCPU and RAM shown for that exact tier.
- Backups, snapshots, traffic limits and any setup charges.
- Contract, cancellation and refund terms.
- The support commitment and the written service-level agreement, if one exists.

Trustpilot reviews are self-selected, so they show what some customers chose to report rather than how most customers fared, and they do not establish typical support response times. Reddit discussions
Two r/VPS threads show the kinds of concerns buyers raise. In “VPS GUI feels slow”, a user reports that a Contabo VPS desktop was slow to respond over RDP even though resource use appeared low. The thread does not identify a cause. Two common factors to check are the distance between your location and the data center and the workload running on the server. The second thread, “Windows VPS”, discusses provider choices for Windows hosting. Both are single user accounts, not diagnoses.
Uptime claims
Contabo’s U.S. homepage advertises “99.996% uptime” (Contabo homepage). This is the company’s own claim. The sources reviewed do not include an independent uptime dataset or the measurement method behind the figure. If uptime matters to your project, request the service-level agreement in writing and compare its terms with those of any competitor before you treat the number as comparable.
Securing an RDP server before you go live
Contabo’s remote desktop page recommends strong passwords, two-factor authentication, firewalls and encryption, and it suggests considering a VPN. These are the vendor’s recommendations. The following checklist applies them to a Windows RDP server:
- Use complex, unique passwords for every account with remote access.
- Enable two-factor authentication wherever the platform or your Windows setup supports it.
- Limit inbound RDP traffic in the firewall to the addresses you actually connect from, rather than leaving the port open to the internet. This is general practice, not a Contabo instruction.
- Install Windows updates promptly and keep the server patched.
- Use encrypted connections, and consider routing access through a VPN if your team works from changing locations.
Who this suits
- A good fit: a single Windows application or a small remote desktop used by a few people, a tight budget, and an administrator who can manage Windows accounts, updates and firewall rules.
- A poor fit: a latency-sensitive desktop used from a distant region without checking the data-center location first, a project that requires a written uptime or support guarantee you have not seen, or a workload that must perform at a fixed level with no room for measurement.
How to verify before you commit
- Open Contabo’s Windows VPS page, select the tier you need and record the price after the 24-month term.
- At checkout, confirm the billing region, currency, tax, Windows licensing, storage type, vCPU and RAM for the exact tier.
- Confirm the data-center location and measure round-trip latency from the place where your users sit, using a ping test or a similar tool.
- Ask support in writing for the service-level agreement and the backup policy, and read the contract for cancellation and refund terms.
- Run your real application on the server for a trial period, timing common tasks and noting any disconnects. Check first whether the terms include a refund window that makes a trial worthwhile.
- Apply the security checklist before you open RDP to the internet.
Contabo’s advertised specifications and introductory prices make it a credible budget candidate for a Windows RDP server. Whether it is a good fit for your workload depends on the renewal price, the server location and the performance you measure yourself, and those are the points to settle before you buy.
