Contabo Alternatives: 5 Providers to Compare for VPS and Cloud Hosting

Compare five Contabo alternatives by compute, location, cloud services and recurring plan terms. No provider is a universal upgrade.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Vultr, OVHcloud and Scaleway are worth comparing with Contabo, but none is a universal upgrade. The right choice depends on the resources your server needs, where it must run, how much administration you want to handle, and the full recurring cost—not just the advertised entry price.

This guide focuses on the alternatives supported by current provider comparisons. It does not rank them by performance: the available sources do not establish independent benchmarks. Plan details, prices and locations can change, so confirm the live terms for your intended region and billing period before switching.

How to compare Contabo alternatives

Start with the workload, then compare equivalent plans. A low monthly price is not a fair comparison if one plan has less memory, a different storage type, lower transfer allowances or a different level of resource sharing.

  • Compute and storage: Compare vCPU count and type, RAM, storage capacity and type, and whether compute is shared or dedicated.
  • Total ongoing cost: Check the standard recurring price, renewal pricing, taxes and billing period. Separate introductory promotions from prices that continue after the first term.
  • Location and network: Confirm that the provider offers the required data-center region and check network capacity, included traffic and any regional limitations.
  • Service model: Decide whether you want a self-managed virtual server or also need managed databases, Kubernetes, application hosting, object storage or dedicated hardware.
  • Operations and support: Review current support channels, service terms and the work your team must do to secure, maintain and troubleshoot the server.

Contabo’s US pricing page lists Cloud VPS 4 with 4 vCPU cores, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD storage and a 200 Mbit/s port, at a displayed monthly price of 4.40. The page also lists larger Core Cloud VPS tiers and says additional storage is available. Check Contabo’s live pricing page for the currency, taxes, availability and current terms that apply to you. Contabo says it may throttle servers at its discretion if usage is exceptionally high or disruptive, so review that usage qualification when comparing service terms.

Providers to consider instead

The options below differ in scope: some are closer to a self-managed VPS, while others offer broader cloud services or more infrastructure types. Their inclusion is not a claim that they outperform Contabo.

Hetzner: compare for straightforward compute

Hetzner is presented in provider comparisons as a compute-focused option, with affordability emphasized particularly for Europe and North America. DigitalOcean’s provider-authored comparison describes Hetzner’s cloud offering as relatively focused on raw compute and its managed-service catalog as narrower than DigitalOcean’s. Check current locations, plan availability and resource details against your own requirements.

DigitalOcean: compare for a broader developer platform

DigitalOcean offers Droplets alongside services including managed databases, Kubernetes, App Platform and object storage. That broader catalog may matter if you want infrastructure and developer tools within one provider, rather than only a virtual machine. These are product-positioning details from DigitalOcean’s own comparison, not independent evidence of customer satisfaction or service quality.

Vultr: compare for deployment and hardware options

Vultr is described in the comparison material as offering cloud compute, bare metal and GPU options. It may be relevant if you need to evaluate more than a conventional VPS, but confirm that the locations, hardware and current prices suit your deployment. Do not assume a particular region or plan is available without checking the provider’s current catalog.

OVHcloud: compare across cloud and dedicated infrastructure

OVHcloud’s catalog is discussed across public cloud, private cloud and dedicated infrastructure. This breadth can make it relevant when evaluating infrastructure beyond a single self-managed VPS. Check the specific product, region and current terms; a provider’s general positioning does not establish that a particular plan meets a residency, compliance or performance requirement.

Scaleway: compare for European cloud options

Scaleway offers virtual instances and other infrastructure services, and may fit workloads for which its European locations and cloud-service options are suitable. Validate the current geography against your users, latency needs and resilience design. A provider’s European presence alone does not establish that it has the region or redundancy your workload requires.

Why a single “best” alternative is misleading

Contabo’s September 24, 2026 comparison characterizes the market as including both budget- and resource-oriented hosts and providers that emphasize developer tooling or global deployment. That is Contabo’s vendor-authored framing, not an independent ranking. DigitalOcean’s provider-authored comparison likewise presents differences in catalog and positioning, but does not establish a universal performance winner.

In practice, the better fit depends on what you are replacing: a low-cost server with a specific resource bundle, a location, a support arrangement, or a wider set of managed services. A provider with more tools may not be the best value if you only need a self-managed VPS; a lower quoted price may not be cheaper once you match resources and recurring terms.

A practical shortlist process

  1. Write down the workload: Record peak and typical CPU and memory needs, storage capacity and type, expected traffic, and any hardware or operating requirements.
  2. Choose the required region: Identify where users or systems are located, then verify current provider availability and any region-specific restrictions.
  3. Match the service model: Decide whether you need only a virtual machine or also managed databases, Kubernetes, application hosting, object storage or dedicated servers.
  4. Compare equivalent plan terms: For each candidate, record vCPU type and count, RAM, storage type and capacity, resource-sharing model, included transfer, port/network details, billing term, recurring and renewal price, and taxes.
  5. Check operational terms: Confirm support channels, service commitments, usage limitations and the responsibilities you retain for backups, security and maintenance.
  6. Test the migration before committing: If practical, deploy a small instance in the target region, check compatibility and connectivity, and measure your own workload before moving production services.

What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you

DigitalOcean’s comparison includes example prices and resources for several providers, but identifies December 2025 as the basis for those examples and notes that details can vary by region and workload. Those figures should not be treated as October 2026 prices. Use live provider pricing pages to compare the same resource bundle, region and billing conditions.
