Consumer augmented reality is still most familiar as a smartphone feature; industrial augmented reality is increasingly designed around specific work tasks, often using a head-mounted display. That shift is not a wholesale move from phones to smart glasses: each form factor serves different needs, and cost, comfort, content and workflow fit still determine whether AR is useful.
What is industrial augmented reality?
Industrial augmented reality (AR) places digital information into a worker’s view of a physical environment to support a defined task. Depending on the system, that view may come through a phone or tablet, or through a head-mounted display (HMD). Common workplace applications include training, step-by-step task guidance, remote assistance, simulation, product design and quality assurance. These are potential uses, not guaranteed results: an AR system must fit the task, equipment and work process.

AR is part of a wider immersive-technology vocabulary. The OECD notes that AR, mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR) and virtual reality (VR) are often used inconsistently in market and policy discussions. The terms should not be treated as interchangeable: it is more useful to say what the device shows and how the worker interacts with it than to rely on a broad label. The OECD describes immersive applications across entertainment, manufacturing, education, healthcare, construction, government services and defence. OECD overview of immersive technologies.

How are phones and head-mounted displays used differently?
| Consideration | Phone-based AR | Head-mounted AR |
|---|---|---|
| Access and familiarity | Uses a familiar, widely available smartphone; the user generally holds and aims it. | Requires a wearable device and setup, so it is less like ordinary phone use. |
| Hands-free work | Holding the phone can be inconvenient when a task requires both hands. | Can keep guidance in the wearer’s view while their hands are occupied, depending on the device and workflow. |
| Cost and form factor | May use a phone the user already has, though the application and task still need to be suitable. | Gartner identified cost and form-factor challenges for general-purpose AR HMDs in its January 2024 analysis. |
| Content and application fit | Convenient access does not ensure relevant applications, useful content or an immersive experience. | Enterprise use tends to be organized around specific workplace applications rather than broad, general-purpose use. |
| Work-process fit | Useful where looking at and manipulating a phone fits the task. | May suit defined workflows such as training or productivity support, provided the wearable does not obstruct the work. |
There is no standardized head-to-head performance test in the cited material, so these differences do not establish that one format is universally better. The practical question is whether the display helps with a real task without adding friction.

Why is industrial AR focused on specific tasks?
Workplaces can define what the system is meant to help with: teach a procedure, display task guidance, connect a worker with a remote expert, or support design and inspection. A narrowly scoped use case makes it possible to consider where digital instructions appear, how the worker interacts with them and whether the device fits the environment. It does not, by itself, demonstrate improved productivity or a positive return on investment.
Gartner’s January 2024 analysis found training to be the most prominent use case among organizations adopting enterprise AR HMDs, and also highlighted efficiency and productivity in industrial settings. This points to a pattern of adoption around concrete workflows, not evidence that every industrial deployment delivers the same gains. Gartner’s analysis of AR trends.

Company interest is also broader than confirmed adoption. In a May 2024 Bitkom Research survey, 64% of companies using, planning or discussing AR cited training, education or professional development as an application area. That figure describes the surveyed companies in those categories; it is not the share of all businesses that have adopted AR. Bitkom Research on company AR and VR use.
What limits smartphone AR for consumers?
Smartphones make AR easy to try because many people already own the hardware, but convenient access is not the same as a satisfying experience. In Ericsson ConsumerLab’s 2024 survey, 42% of surveyed early adopters said they were satisfied with current smartphone AR experiences. The study covered 10,000 early adopters aged 15–69 across 10 markets; the result should not be generalized to all consumers.

Among the limitations described in the study were a lack of relevant applications and content, small screens, arm fatigue from holding a phone up, and limited immersion. These problems also show why simply moving the same experience onto a wearable is not a complete solution: the content still has to matter, and the device must be comfortable and practical for its intended use. Ericsson ConsumerLab’s report on augmented reality.
Is AR moving from phones to smart glasses?
Not in a simple, universal replacement. Phones remain a common consumer entry point, while enterprise HMD use is concentrated in defined work settings. Gartner’s January 2024 analysis identified cost and form factor as barriers to general-purpose AR HMD adoption. A wearable can be a better fit when workers need hands-free information, but that advantage matters only if the device is comfortable, the content is useful and the workflow justifies its use.

Market forecasts suggest growing industrial interest, but they are not evidence of an outcome already achieved. In 1Q 2026, ABI Research forecast a 59% compound annual growth rate in manufacturing AR smart-glasses shipments from 2024 to 2030. It forecast annual manufacturing shipments rising from fewer than 400,000 to 6.5 million by 2030, and described manufacturing as the second-largest vertical after consumer. These are ABI’s projections, not settled shipment figures. ABI Research’s manufacturing smart-glasses shipment forecast.

What does wider AR adoption depend on?
Workplace adoption is not just a hardware decision. It also depends on whether an organization can create or maintain useful content, fit AR into existing processes and manage the practical risks of using immersive systems. The European Commission’s XR study examines opportunities, risks, gaps and adoption across EU industries, providing a wider view of the ecosystem surrounding industrial applications. Its scope is European and covers XR broadly, rather than proving adoption levels for AR alone. European Commission study on XR opportunities, risks and gaps.
