For most PS5 owners, the PS5 Pro is difficult to justify at its current US recommended price of $899.99. It can deliver sharper images, stronger ray tracing and smoother performance in supported games, but the improvement varies by title. The $749 figure in the original headline is a historical price, not Sony’s current US MSRP: Sony announced the $899.99 price effective April 2, 2026. Retail prices can differ.
Is the PS5 Pro worth it?
It can be worth the premium for players who regularly play titles with Pro-specific enhancements and care a great deal about image quality, frame rate or ray tracing. For casual players, or anyone whose favorite games show only modest differences, a standard PS5 is likely the better value.

That is a conditional recommendation, not a claim that the Pro is a bad console. Tom’s Guide’s year-one reviewer reported clear side-by-side differences in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, but judged the changes incremental rather than a complete visual transformation. The publication’s verdict was that the Pro chiefly suits dedicated PlayStation players seeking the best console visuals. Its review describes the reviewer’s experience; it is not a universal test across games.

Sony’s 2024 announcement described a larger graphics processor, faster memory, improved ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-based upscaling technique. Sony said the Pro has 67 percent more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28 percent faster memory and can render up to 45 percent faster. Those are manufacturer specifications and capability claims, not a promise of the same performance gain in every game. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement also introduced PSSR as a way to reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a game’s rendered output.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Whether those capabilities translate into a noticeable benefit depends on developers’ implementation. Sony’s US product page lists more than 100 enhanced PS5 titles, a live count that may change, but “enhanced” does not mean every game receives the same treatment. Some titles can prioritize sharper output, others frame rate or ray tracing, and some may show subtler differences. Sony’s PS5 Pro page gives game-specific examples.
A concrete example: The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Naughty Dog Lead Programmer Vincent Marxen said the game’s PS5 Pro-specific enhanced rendering mode renders at 1440p and upscales to 4K with PSSR while targeting 60 frames per second. That is a developer-stated mode for this game—not a general description of how all Pro games run.

What has changed since launch?
The Pro launched in the US on November 7, 2024, at a recommended price of $699.99, with a 2TB SSD and a DualSense controller. Sony confirmed the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive was sold separately. On March 27, 2026, Sony announced a new US PS5 Pro MSRP of $899.99, effective April 2, 2026. The $749 reference is therefore a past price point, not the latest official US MSRP. Sony’s launch announcement and its 2026 price announcement document those figures; a retailer’s checkout price may vary.
Image reconstruction has also continued to evolve. In February 2026, Sony said upgraded PSSR was rolling out globally and that the original PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in more than 50 PS5 Pro games at the time of the announcement. In October 2026, Sony announced QSSR, an upscaling option for the base PS5, initially for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony described PSSR as the higher tier on Pro. These announcements do not mean every game uses either technique, or that the base PS5 now matches every Pro feature. Sony’s upgraded PSSR announcement and its QSSR announcement explain the updates.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether the upgrade makes sense for you
- Start with the price difference you would actually pay. Compare the Pro’s current local price with the cost of keeping your current console or buying a standard PS5. The official US MSRP is a reference point, not a guarantee of retailer pricing.
- Check your regular games. Look for Pro-enhanced modes in the titles you play most, then consider whether their specific changes—such as higher resolution, frame-rate options or ray tracing—matter to you.
- Consider your display. A 4K display can help show image-detail improvements, while a compatible 120Hz display can matter if you value high-refresh-rate play. Sony advertises support for 60Hz and 120Hz displays, but the benefits remain game-dependent; a new display is not automatically necessary.
- Include the disc-drive decision. If you use physical games or watch discs, factor in Sony’s separately sold Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. Digital-only players may not need it.
- Weigh the upgrade against what you already own. The case is strongest if you play supported games often and prize their visual or performance improvements enough to justify the added cost. If you are satisfied with your current PS5 or mostly play games with modest Pro differences, keeping it is a reasonable choice.
Who should consider the PS5 Pro?
- Consider it if you are a dedicated PlayStation player, your regular games have meaningful Pro modes, and you place a high value on image quality, frame rate or ray tracing.
- Think twice if your current PS5 already meets your needs, you play casually, or your favorite titles show little difference.
- Budget for extras if you need an optical drive for physical games or discs; the Pro does not include one.
