Check what it collects, why, who receives it, how long it is kept, and which choices you can actually change. Then verify those controls in the car and its account or app, and ask which features may stop working if you limit collection. A brand-wide summary is not enough: equipment, software, settings, accounts, and region can all affect the answer.
What data does a connected car collect?
Depending on its equipment, services, and settings, a vehicle may handle location and route history, driving behavior, vehicle identifiers, diagnostics, maintenance information, feature and app usage, and information imported from a paired phone or third-party app. The Federal Trade Commission explains why connected-car location and other data can be sensitive and raise privacy and financial-welfare concerns in its May 2024 analysis.

Do not assume every vehicle collects or transmits every category. For example, Ford’s U.S. privacy notice describes identifiers, system status, diagnostics, vehicle analytics, driving data, location services, and connected apps; it is an example for Ford’s stated U.S. scope, not a rule for other makes, markets, or vehicles.
Why is the data collected, and who receives it?
Separate data needed to provide a feature you requested from data used for safety or emergency functions, diagnostics and updates, product improvement, marketing, or personalization. Ask whether each purpose is optional and whether information gathered for one feature is also used for another purpose.

Read the recipient list, not just the collection list. Look for service providers, app providers, insurers, consumer reporting agencies, and other third parties. If a driving-score, insurance, or connected-service program is offered, ask whether enrollment creates a separate data-sharing path and how to decline it.
The FTC’s January 2026 GM/OnStar order followed allegations about collecting and disclosing precise location and driving data without adequate notice and affirmative consent. The order applies to GM and has specified requirements and exceptions; it should not be read as a description of every automaker’s practices. The FTC described the case as involving data from millions of vehicles, which is case context, not an estimate of how common any practice is across the market.

Can you turn off location tracking or other sharing?
Ask whether precise location, driving-behavior collection, app permissions, analytics, and account-linked sharing can be controlled separately. Check the dashboard, manufacturer account, and app: a single privacy switch may not govern every profile, device, or service. Confirm whether a choice is an opt-out, whether it applies immediately, and whether it covers data already collected.

In its January 2026 order, the FTC required GM to obtain “affirmative express consent from consumers prior to collecting, using, or sharing connected vehicle data,” subject to specified exceptions. That is a GM-specific requirement under the order, not a consent standard you can assume applies to other brands.

Ford says available controls vary by vehicle and system version. Its U.S. notice also says deleting the Ford app by itself does not disable account-linked data sharing. Check the controls and instructions for the exact car instead of treating app removal as a complete opt-out.
What features might stop working if you limit sharing?
Compare each privacy choice with the feature you care about: remote locking or vehicle location, navigation, roadside assistance, connected emergency services, diagnostics, or software updates. Disabling data sharing can affect connected features, but the effect depends on the vehicle and the specific setting. Ask the dealer or manufacturer which feature depends on which data, and whether a less restrictive setting is available. The Associated Press report of November 5, 2025 describes this consumer-control trade-off; it is not a guarantee that a particular feature will be disabled in every car.

How to compare two vehicles’ privacy practices
Use the same checklist for each exact model year, trim, and market. A short side-by-side comparison makes missing answers visible:

| Consent and enrollment | Whether connected services or specific uses are optional, and what affirmative choices or opt-outs are offered. |
| Control and deletion | How granular the controls are, where they live, and how to request access or deletion. |
| Feature impact | Which conveniences or safety-related services rely on the data you might limit. |
| Used-car transition | How to remove profiles and accounts, clear stored data, and transfer or cancel subscriptions. |
If an answer is missing, ask the dealer to point to the relevant current privacy notice, owner’s manual, or service terms. Do not compare a brand’s general statement for one market with a model-specific notice for another.

What should you delete before buying a used car—or selling yours?
For a used vehicle, have the seller or dealer explain how to reset the infotainment system and modem, remove previous users, and transfer or cancel connected services. Confirm that prior profiles, paired phones, and account associations are removed before connecting your own account.
When selling or trading in a car, the Federal Trade Commission recommends removing stored data, disconnecting devices and vehicle apps, and canceling or transferring connected subscriptions. Possible stored information includes contacts, app logins, digital content, location history, and garage codes. Follow the specific owner’s manual and manufacturer instructions for clearing the vehicle and removing it from accounts. A factory reset may not cancel subscriptions.
- Clear local information. Remove profiles, contacts, saved destinations, app credentials, garage codes, and other saved data using the vehicle’s documented reset process.
- Disconnect devices and apps. Unpair phones and other devices, and remove vehicle connections from relevant apps.
- Remove the vehicle from accounts. Use the manufacturer’s account or contact its support team to remove the car and its users.
- Handle subscriptions. Cancel or transfer satellite radio, hotspot, and other data or connected-service plans; do not assume the vehicle reset does this.
These steps reflect the FTC’s consumer guidance on removing personal information from a car and the account, reset, and service details in Ford’s U.S. notice. For a starting point, AP reported that Privacy4Cars offers a free VIN-based vehicle privacy report and a service that can direct or assist with data requests. Treat it as an optional resource and verify the exact vehicle’s current manufacturer notice and controls.

- Which data categories does this exact car collect when connected services are enabled?
- Which collection or sharing purposes can I decline separately?
- Can I disable precise location or driving-data sharing without disabling other services?
- Who receives information through any driving-score, insurance, app, or connected-service program?
- Which features will change if I turn off a specific setting?
- Where are the controls in the vehicle and account, and how do I request access or deletion?
- For a used car, how will prior users and accounts be removed, and what subscriptions need separate handling?
Mozilla’s Lauren Hendry Parsons, quoted by AP on November 5, 2025, said, “There are permissions in your settings that you can make choices about,” and advised, “Go through on a granular level and look at those settings where you can.” Use that as a prompt to inspect the actual controls, not as proof that every vehicle offers the same choices.
