Neither built-in car apps nor Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is automatically more private. Built-in services may send vehicle and account-linked data to the automaker; phone-based systems change where apps run, but Apple services and third-party apps can still receive information, and the car may receive selected details too. The answer depends on your vehicle, country, apps, accounts and settings—not just the screen you use.
What the different setups mean for your data
“Built-in” describes where an app runs, not one shared privacy policy. A vehicle may have a modem, connected services, downloaded apps and accounts that transmit information independently of a paired phone. CarPlay apps run from the iPhone, while Android Auto connects phone apps to the vehicle display; neither label, by itself, describes every data flow between the phone, carmaker, platform provider and app publisher.

| Setup | What the official material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Automaker-connected features and built-in apps | In Ford’s US notice, data transmission depends on vehicle equipment, features, software, settings and selected services. Information can include identifiers, diagnostics, location, voice or visual information in some situations, and media-listening analytics. | Ford’s notice is not a statement about other automakers, countries, models or configurations. |
| Apple CarPlay | Apple says CarPlay apps are powered by the iPhone and only limited experience-related metadata is passed to the car. Apple Maps and Siri have their own data practices, and Route Sharing can send route details to the vehicle. | Running an app from the phone does not mean no information reaches Apple, the vehicle or an app provider. |
| Android Auto | Google’s Android for Cars developer documentation describes permissions that apps can request for certain vehicle properties and sensors, with user grants required for specified access. | The documentation reviewed does not provide a complete consumer-facing inventory of Android Auto collection, retention or sharing. |
The useful comparison is not just “car or phone.” Ask what data is collected, where it goes, how it is linked to a person or vehicle, what settings control it, how long it is kept, and what remains stored in the car.
What can a built-in app or connected car send?
Ford and Lincoln: a US-specific example
Ford’s Connected Vehicle Privacy section for Ford and Lincoln vehicles purchased or leased by consumers in the United States took effect July 1, 2026. It says connected-vehicle data transmission depends on installed connectivity, features, software, sharing settings and selected services. Ford says some model-year 2020-and-later vehicles automatically transmit vehicle analytics and some information, such as diagnostics, at delivery. That threshold describes Ford’s notice, not a general rule for the auto industry.

The notice lists identifiers such as the vehicle identification number (VIN), modem electronic serial number, SIM serial number, hardware identifiers and software versions. Other categories can include location details, voice and visual information in some situations, and media-listening analytics. Ford says transmissions are generally associated with a VIN or another unique identifier that can be linked to the owner, although some information may be sent in de-identified form.
Information can also flow when a driver uses an infotainment app, connects a phone by Bluetooth or tethering, or links a service or account to the vehicle. Ford says its SYNC Mobile Apps may send encrypted information through the connected device’s plan, including the VIN, SYNC module serial number, odometer, enabled apps, usage statistics and debugging information. In some newer Ford Digital Experience vehicles, apps can be embedded or downloaded directly; their permissions may cover vehicle and driving data, location, convenience controls and notifications.
These are examples of what one manufacturer’s US notice says. Check the privacy notice and settings for the specific vehicle and market rather than assuming another brand follows the same practices.

What changes when you use CarPlay?
Apps run on the iPhone, but data flows remain
Apple describes CarPlay as an iPhone-powered environment: apps shown in CarPlay run from the iPhone, with limited metadata passed to the car when essential to the experience. Apple’s examples include song information and current-call details displayed in the vehicle. Third-party audio, messaging, voice-dialing and navigation apps remain subject to their iOS protections and their own privacy policies. Apple also says a policy is required for third-party apps reviewed for CarPlay.
Apple Maps and Route Sharing
Apple’s Maps privacy notice says a navigation request can send Apple the device’s current location or origin, destination, transport mode—including whether the phone is connected to CarPlay—and a random identifier for that navigation session. If CarPlay Route Sharing is enabled, Maps sends the origin or current location, destination and route line to the vehicle. Apple says the vehicle’s use of those details is governed by the vehicle’s privacy policy.
To check that feature on the iPhone, go to Settings > General > CarPlay > My Car > Route Sharing. Apple says Route Sharing can be disabled there. This controls that route-sharing feature; it does not describe every other data flow from Maps, CarPlay or the car.

Siri and third-party services
Apple’s Siri notice says request history can include transcripts and associated request data. Apple may retain that history for up to two years under a rotating, device-generated identifier that is not tied to an Apple Account or email address; a reviewed subset may be kept longer. This is Apple’s stated potential retention period for request history, not a claim that all Siri data or every user’s data is retained for that long. Siri may send contextual information, and location is sent when Location Services are enabled for Siri. When Siri interacts with a third-party service, that service’s terms and privacy policy apply. Settings and processing can vary with operating-system version and opt-ins.

What is established about Android Auto privacy?
The Android for Cars developer documentation reviewed here is useful but narrow. It says Car App Library apps can request access to specified vehicle properties and sensors through declared permissions, and that users must grant the relevant permissions. Requirements differ between Android Auto and Android Automotive OS. Examples of vehicle sensor data include accelerometer, gyroscope, compass and location.
The same documentation includes driver-distraction safeguards for Android Auto media apps, including a requirement that playback not begin through the car speakers unless the user starts it. That is an app-behavior and safety rule, not a general privacy guarantee.

The available developer material does not provide a complete, current consumer-facing map of Android Auto data collection, retention, account linkage or onward sharing. So it supports checking app permissions and the relevant Google, automaker and app notices, but not a broad claim about all Android Auto data practices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess privacy in your own car
- Identify the setup. Note the vehicle make, model year, infotainment version, country and any connected-services subscription. Privacy terms and controls can vary with each.
- Review the vehicle’s controls and notice. Check settings for connectivity, location, voice, apps, analytics and linked accounts, and consult the owner’s manual because menu names and available controls vary.
- Check every app separately. Review permissions and privacy notices for apps in the infotainment system and on the phone. Consider what each needs—such as contacts, location, vehicle data or notifications—and whether denying access disables a feature you use.
- Inspect CarPlay Route Sharing if you use Apple Maps. Decide whether sending route details to the vehicle is useful, then check the setting at Settings > General > CarPlay > My Car > Route Sharing.
- Trace the destination and identity link. For each data category that matters to you, ask whether it stays on the phone, goes to the automaker, platform provider, app publisher or another service, and whether it is associated with a VIN, account or device identifier. Check the relevant notice for retention and further sharing.
Permissions and opt-outs can limit specific access or functions; they are not a blanket guarantee that no data is collected. A phone setting, cable disconnect or app uninstall may not affect a separate vehicle modem or account-linked service.
How to clear personal information before lending or selling a car
A vehicle can retain information even after the phone is disconnected, including paired-phone records, imported address books, profiles and accounts. For a shared, rented or recently purchased used vehicle, inspect the stored devices, profiles and linked accounts. Before selling or stopping use of a vehicle, follow its manual’s reset procedure and remove associated account links where applicable.

Ford’s US notice specifically recommends a master/factory reset before selling or no longer using the vehicle to clear stored information such as an imported address book. It also says deleting the Ford app does not disable account-linked sharing: Ford says the VIN must be removed from associated accounts or the vehicle must be master/factory reset to stop that access and transmission. The precise controls depend on equipment and model, so follow the instructions for that vehicle.
Which option is more private?
There is no evidence here to declare a universal winner. CarPlay makes clear that apps run from the iPhone, but Maps, Siri, third-party apps and Route Sharing can still create data flows. An automaker’s built-in services may collect vehicle-originated information, with practices shaped by the particular vehicle and choices. Android Auto’s developer permissions establish some app access controls, not a complete consumer data account. The more useful choice is the one whose specific data flows, permissions and account settings you can understand and configure for your vehicle and the apps you use.
