Connect to a Remote Registry in Windows 11 or 10—and Fix Connection Errors

Use Registry Editor’s Connect Network Registry command to access another Windows PC, provided the target service, network, and permissions allow it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect to another PC’s registry, open Registry Editor on your computer, select File > Connect Network Registry, enter the target computer’s name, and confirm. The target must be reachable, its Remote Registry service must be running, and your account must be authorized. Back up registry data before changing it.

Connect with Registry Editor

  1. On the computer you are using, open Start, type regedit, and run Registry Editor.
  2. Select File > Connect Network Registry.
  3. Enter the target computer’s name in the computer selection dialog. Use Check Names if available, then confirm.
  4. Browse the remote roots you need, such as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE or HKEY_USERS.
  5. Make only the intended change, then close the connection when finished.

Microsoft documents this menu sequence and name-check step in its Remote Registry connection troubleshooting guidance. The same general workflow applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10; the documentation does not establish a version-specific interface difference.

Check these requirements if the connection fails

Remote Registry must be running on the target

The target PC needs the Remote Registry service running. Microsoft documents its default startup configuration as Manual. If it is stopped, an authorized administrator can check or start it in the Services app, provided organizational policy allows it. Microsoft’s RegConnectRegistryW reference states that the service must be running on the remote computer.

Confirm the computer name and network reachability

Use a computer name that resolves on your network, or an appropriate address. Check that the target is on and reachable, and that local and intervening firewall or network policy permits the connection. Microsoft mentions TCP 135 or 445 in guidance for an Azure virtual machine scenario; those ports are not a universal firewall prescription for every Windows network. Follow the rules for your environment rather than opening ports broadly.

Check authorization and remotely accessible paths

Your account needs access to the computer and to the registry data you want to view or change. Registry permissions and policy governing remotely accessible paths can restrict what is available. Being able to use another remote-management feature does not, by itself, prove that your account can access the registry remotely. Domain or workgroup security policy can also affect authentication.

  • Verify that the target is on and its name resolves.
  • Confirm that Remote Registry is running on the target.
  • Ask an administrator to check your access and the relevant registry permissions.
  • Check whether firewall, network, or organizational policy blocks the connection or the requested paths.

Know which remote registry roots are available

Microsoft’s Win32 API documentation identifies HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_PERFORMANCE_DATA, and HKEY_USERS as predefined roots for remote registry connections. Access to a root does not override permissions or policy restrictions on particular paths.

Protect the target PC before editing

The registry contains sensitive Windows configuration. Microsoft describes access-control lists (ACLs) as a safeguard against unauthorized access and notes that policy controls which paths can be accessed remotely. Limit access to authorized administrators and only the paths needed. Before changing values, back up the affected key or registry state; an incorrect edit can cause system problems.

Microsoft’s registry backup and restore guidance explains how to protect registry data. If you are unsure whether a change is required or safe, stop and consult the administrator responsible for the target computer.
