To use Claude or ChatGPT with an existing task manager, connect the assistant to that service’s MCP server and authorize the access it requests. MCP is the connection protocol; the task manager’s server determines which information and actions—such as finding, creating, or updating tasks—are available. Setup differs by assistant, plan, and product surface, so there is no single universal recipe.
What MCP does in a task-management workflow
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how applications provide context to large language models. A task manager’s MCP server exposes selected data and tools to a compatible AI client. After you connect and authorize it, you can ask the assistant to use the actions the server supports. MCP does not make every task-manager feature available automatically: the server, permissions, and client determine what you can do. How to connect a task manager safely
- Choose the exact workflow and assistant surface. Decide which task manager you use, whether you are connecting the Claude or ChatGPT app or an API, and whether you need read-only access or task creation and updates.
- Start with the task manager’s official MCP instructions. Verify the endpoint and authentication method there. For example, Todoist documents

ChatGPT’s MCP-app workflow uses developer mode and workspace controls. Claude app connectors and API connections have separate setup paths; use the instructions for the surface you actually use.
- Review tools and permissions before authorizing. Check which records and actions the server exposes and which scopes you are granting. If you do not need to make changes, prefer a read-only endpoint or scope when available.
- Test with a low-impact request. Start by asking the assistant to find a task or read a project, then check the returned details. Before relying on write actions, make a limited change and verify the result in the task manager.
- Keep review for consequential changes. Read the proposed task edits and confirm they are appropriate. OpenAI warns that an untrusted MCP server may access or steal information shared through app use or induce unintended tool actions; see its MCP servers guide.
Can ChatGPT create or update tasks?
It can when the connected MCP app exposes write actions, the relevant workspace and account permissions allow them, and the ChatGPT plan and controls support the integration. OpenAI’s Help Center describes developer mode, building and testing MCP apps, and publishing them through workspace settings. As of the documentation consulted on October 7, 2026, full MCP support—including write actions—was rolling out in beta to Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans. Admins or owners control enabling and publishing in the documented workflow. Availability and administrative controls can vary, so check the live ChatGPT developer mode and full MCP connectors instructions for your workspace. App permissions and the context of an action can also affect whether ChatGPT requests confirmation before a write or modification.

How do you connect Todoist to Claude?
Todoist’s official developer hub documents its hosted MCP server and names Claude as a compatible client. The documented endpoint is https://ai.todoist.net/mcp; Todoist’s API documentation describes OAuth and task and project operations. Use Todoist’s current setup instructions and Claude’s instructions for the particular Claude surface you use. Do not treat an older community server or local-server guide as the same OAuth-based hosted connection. See Todoist Developers and Todoist API v1.
Why Claude setup depends on the product surface
Claude’s Messages API MCP connector is for API callers connecting to remote MCP servers. It lets callers configure tools and pass OAuth bearer tokens, and supports remote HTTP transports—Streamable HTTP and SSE. It does not attach local stdio servers directly. This API procedure is not a universal guide to connecting through the Claude app, whose connector settings and plan availability have their own requirements. - Objects: Confirm whether the server exposes personal tasks, engineering issues, workspace pages and databases, or team projects—the information you actually want to use.
- Actions: Check whether its tools only read data or can create and update records. The word “MCP” alone does not establish write access.
- Authentication and control: Understand the OAuth scopes, account permissions, workspace approval, and administrative controls involved.
- Client and plan: Verify support for your exact Claude or ChatGPT surface and plan; compatibility in one product surface does not guarantee availability in another.
- Review: Treat the connected server as a source of both data and actions. Grant only the permissions needed, and inspect consequential edits before relying on them.
