You can give ChatGPT access to YouTube transcript retrieval by connecting an MCP server that offers a transcript tool. MCP is the connection layer; a separate provider supplies the transcript service. The example below uses a third-party provider, not an official OpenAI or YouTube transcript connector.
What happens when ChatGPT uses an MCP transcript tool
Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets ChatGPT connect to tools exposed by a server. When you ask for a video transcript, ChatGPT can call the server’s transcript tool, receive the available text, and use it to answer a question or summarize the video. The server’s tools, access rules, transcript availability, and output limits determine what it can return.

For example, the third-party service YouTube Video Transcript documents an MCP integration that can fetch a transcript from a YouTube video URL. OpenAI’s current help documentation describes custom MCP apps on the ChatGPT web app for Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces. Availability and controls depend on the account and workspace; administrators manage developer mode and app deployment or publication. Check the current OpenAI setup instructions and your workspace settings.

- Enable developer mode and add a custom app. In ChatGPT on the web, use the developer-mode and app setup controls documented by OpenAI. Provide the MCP endpoint and any authentication details required by the server.
- Review the app’s tools before creating it. Scan what the server exposes and confirm you recognize the service and understand what its tools can access.
- Authorize the provider if prompted. The YouTube Video Transcript guide describes an OAuth consent flow for its ChatGPT connection. That authorization flow belongs to that provider and may differ for another server.
- Enable the app in the conversation. The provider’s guide says its connector must be enabled for each conversation that needs it. Ask ChatGPT to retrieve a transcript and include the YouTube video URL.
For example, you can ask: “Fetch the transcript for this YouTube video: . Then summarize the main argument and list the supporting points.” Replace the example URL with the video you want. If the server returns transcript text, ask follow-up questions about that content.
What to check if no transcript is returned
A connection does not guarantee that every video has retrievable transcript text. The provider’s documentation identifies cases where captions are unavailable. A failed request may also reflect the server’s access rules or limits rather than a problem with MCP itself.
- Check that the connector is enabled in the current conversation and that any requested authorization is complete.
- Confirm the video URL is correct and ask whether captions or a transcript are available for that video.
- Review any error or limit reported by the MCP tool; the available tools and their restrictions are provider-specific.
How this differs from YouTube’s captions API
YouTube’s official Data API has a different access model. The captions.list method returns caption-track metadata, not the caption text. The captions implementation guide points to captions.download to retrieve a track and says downloading requires OAuth 2.0 authorization. Do not treat a successful captions-list response as a transcript.

Review privacy and trust before connecting
An MCP server is an external service that may receive information from your interaction. OpenAI’s API guide states: “By default, OpenAI will request your approval before any data is shared with a connector or remote MCP server.” Review each approval request and what data it covers rather than assuming approval makes a server trustworthy. For ChatGPT workspace apps, OpenAI says the organization is responsible for vetting a server before publication. Read the OpenAI MCP server guidance and the workspace app guidance before connecting a service.
