To connect an existing AI agent to a public discussion forum, build a small adapter that receives permitted forum activity, selects only the context needed, asks your agent for a response, and publishes that response through the platform’s official API or bot interface. For Discourse, use its forum API; for Discord, create a bot application and use its supported Gateway and HTTP APIs. Avoid browser automation and ordinary user accounts used as bots.
Choose the platform interface that matches the job
Decide what the agent should do before granting access: summarize selected discussions, answer when mentioned, reply to new posts, or create topics. These behaviors need different read and write permissions. Use the forum’s official integration surface, then confirm the specific site or server allows the operations you need.

Build an adapter around the agent
Keep the agent separate from the forum connection. The adapter handles platform-specific authentication and events; the existing agent continues to handle the reasoning and response. This is a practical architecture based on the platforms’ documented APIs, not a vendor-prescribed or pre-tested design.

- Receive an allowed event. For Discord, a bot can receive real-time events through the Gateway. For Discourse, identify an event mechanism supported by the specific forum rather than assuming the API overview provides one.
- Check whether the agent should act. Filter for the intended trigger, such as a mention or a post in an approved channel. Avoid replying to every message unless that is explicitly the desired behavior.
- Fetch only relevant context. Include the post and the thread context needed to answer. Minimize data sent to the agent and follow the platform’s data-use rules.
- Call the existing agent. Pass the selected context through the agent’s own service interface. Keep forum credentials out of prompts.
- Publish through the platform API. Use the authenticated API operation appropriate to the reply or topic, and keep a record of the event and resulting post so a repeated event does not create a duplicate.
Connect to Discourse
Start with the Discourse API documentation and map the agent’s exact task to the documented operations for reading posts, retrieving thread context, replying, or creating topics. Some endpoints are public, but most require authentication; the documentation overview does not guarantee that a particular hosted forum enables an operation or grants your account access.

- Keep the API credential on a trusted server, limit it to the account and actions required, and rotate it if it is exposed.
- Confirm how the instance delivers new-post events; the API overview alone does not establish a real-time event mechanism.
- Track forum identifiers for incoming events and created replies to prevent duplicate posting if the same event is delivered again.
Connect to Discord
Create a bot installation
Create a Discord application with a bot user and configure its OAuth installation flow using the bot scope. Request only the permissions needed for the intended behavior. The person installing the bot must have permission to add it to the server. Follow Discord’s OAuth2 documentation rather than automating a standard user account; Discord prohibits self-bots outside its OAuth2 and bot API.
Receive events and post replies
A common integration is to receive a Gateway event, pass the relevant thread context to the existing agent, and send the answer through authenticated HTTP requests or supported interaction handling. Discord’s HTTP API uses an Authorization header. Treat this as an implementation pattern, not a tested deployment.

If the destination is a Discord forum-style channel, the API identifies its channel type as GUILD_FORUM; only threads can be created there. Check the bot’s current channel permissions and the thread operations needed for the workflow. See Discord channel documentation.
Check privacy, permissions, and access requirements
Permissions and data use are part of the integration design, not last-minute settings. Discord’s Developer Policy limits API data use to what is needed to provide the application’s stated functionality, prohibits scraping, and prohibits using API message content to train AI models without express permission. Do not repurpose community messages for training or unrelated profiling.

Discord has also announced strengthened protections and review requirements for some apps that access message content, server member lists, or presence. An app that previously had access may have affected functionality if it does not complete review or receive access. Check the current developer portal and policy before choosing intents or deploying broadly, since requirements can change.
These are Discord-specific requirements, not a universal statement of law or policy for every public forum. For other platforms, consult their own API terms, privacy rules, and moderation policies.

Handle Discord rate limits without guessing
Discord applies per-route and global limits and advises developers not to hard-code them because they vary and can change. Inspect response headers; when an HTTP request returns 429, use the Retry-After header or the response’s retry_after field to determine when to try again. Repeatedly hitting and ignoring limits can lead to API-key revocation and client blocking. See the rate-limit documentation.

- Wait for the server-indicated interval before retrying.
- Set a bounded retry count and send persistent failures to an operator for review.
- Do not retry indefinitely or keep sending requests with invalid credentials or insufficient permissions.
Roll out in controlled steps
- Write down the precise behavior: summarize, answer on mention, reply to each new post, or create topics.
- Verify that the platform has an official API or supported bot interface, then map the task to the needed operations.
- Store credentials in the adapter’s trusted service, not in prompts, public repositories, or client-side code.
- Implement the narrow event-to-agent-to-response path and pass only the context needed.
- Check platform privacy and AI-use rules before enabling message access or processing.
- Begin in a controlled forum, channel, or test account. Check event receipt, reply placement, and duplicate prevention before widening access.
- Monitor API responses and honor platform throttling behavior.
- Recheck access requirements before launch, especially if the Discord bot requests message content, member lists, or presence.
