To set up a game controller on a Windows PC, connect it with a compatible USB data cable or pair it over Bluetooth if both the controller and PC support that connection. Windows may detect the controller automatically; then check that the game you want to play accepts controller input. A successful Windows connection does not guarantee that every game supports the controller.
Choose USB or Bluetooth
Use the connection method supported by your controller and PC. A USB connection needs a cable that fits the controller and carries data; Bluetooth requires Bluetooth on the PC and a controller that supports Bluetooth pairing. The better choice depends on your hardware and the game. The available guidance does not establish that one method is always faster or more reliable.

| Connection | What you need | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| USB | A compatible USB data cable and an available PC port. Cable and port requirements vary by controller model. | Connect the controller and let Windows detect it. |
| Bluetooth | A Bluetooth-capable controller and a PC with Bluetooth. If the PC lacks Bluetooth, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may be an option. | Enable Bluetooth, put the controller in its model-specific pairing mode, and add it in Windows. |
Check the controller maker’s instructions for model-specific cable, pairing, firmware, or compatibility requirements. An adapter is only useful if it supports a Bluetooth connection compatible with the controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConnect a controller with USB
- Connect the controller to the PC using a compatible USB data cable.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device and install what it needs. Microsoft says, “Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it.”
- If it is not detected, open the device-add flow: in Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device; in Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device. Follow the on-screen prompts. The available device options can vary by device type and Windows updates.
If Windows still does not see it, check that the cable fits and supports data, try a direct PC port rather than an unnecessary hub, and restart Windows. Consult the controller maker’s support information for any model-specific connection or driver requirements.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Pair a Bluetooth controller with Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Check Bluetooth availability. The PC needs Bluetooth. If it does not have it built in, a compatible USB Bluetooth adapter may provide it.
- Turn Bluetooth on. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices and turn on Bluetooth. You can also use the taskbar’s Bluetooth quick setting; its layout differs between Windows versions.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Turn it on and use the pairing-button sequence in its manual or the manufacturer’s support page. The sequence depends on the model; do not assume one controller’s instructions apply to another.
- Add it in Windows. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, select the device type, and choose the controller when it appears. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device, select Bluetooth, and choose the controller. Complete any additional prompts.
After pairing, the controller should reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the devices are in range.
Check that Windows and your game recognize the controller
First check that Windows lists the controller as connected. Then open the game and inspect its control or input settings. Windows recognition confirms the connection to the PC; game support is a separate question and can vary by title and connection method.

For games on Steam
Valve’s Steam information for Windows 10 or newer lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and Steam Controllers as supported controller types in Big Picture mode. Valve says third-party controllers often work, but are not officially supported. Check the individual game’s Steam listing for its support label:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Full Controller Support: Steam describes the game as playable with a controller without needing a mouse or keyboard.
- Partial Controller Support: A mouse or keyboard may still be needed for some setup or interface tasks.
These Steam details do not define support for games outside Steam. Compatibility can also depend on the controller and how it is connected. For example, Valve’s Steam Link guidance says an Xbox Series X controller is supported over USB, but not Bluetooth, in that Steam Link scenario; this is not a general Windows limitation.

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
Troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing
If Windows does not pair with the controller, work through these checks:
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the PC and that the controller is in its model-specific pairing mode.
- Move the controller closer to the PC and check that it is charged or has fresh batteries.
- Turn the controller off and on again, then try pairing once more.
- If Windows lists the controller but cannot connect, remove it from the Bluetooth device list and add it again.
- On Windows 11, try Microsoft’s automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- If Bluetooth is missing from Settings, check the PC specifications and whether its Bluetooth adapter driver is installed.
Microsoft identifies pairing mode, range, low charge, and configuration, driver, service, or update issues as possible causes of Bluetooth connection problems. Nearby unshielded USB 3.0 devices can also interfere with Bluetooth in some situations.

If the controller connects but does not work in a game
Check whether that specific game supports controllers, then inspect its input settings. For a Steam game, use the game’s Steam controller-support label as a guide. For a game from another store or launcher, check that game’s own support information. If the game supports controllers but still does not respond, confirm the controller remains connected in Windows and check the maker’s instructions for that model and connection method.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says PCs running it continue to work, but the operating system no longer receives Microsoft’s free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. The setup paths above are included for Windows 10 users, but the support status is relevant to the security and maintenance of the PC as a whole.
