To play a DVD on a VIZIO Smart TV, connect a DVD player to the TV—preferably with an HDMI cable—then switch the TV to that HDMI input. The TV’s internet connection is not needed for this wired setup.
What you need to connect
- A DVD player and a VIZIO TV with at least one matching video input.
- A cable compatible with the output on the player and the input on the TV. HDMI is the simplest option when both devices have HDMI ports.
- The VIZIO remote, or the TV’s Input control, to select the port you used.
Port counts and connector types vary by TV model. For example, VIZIO lists three side HDMI 2.1 inputs on the V755M-K03 V-Series and two side HDMI 1.4 inputs on the D43fM-K04 D-Series. Those examples do not establish which ports your TV has. Check the labels beside its ports and the manual for its exact model; VIZIO’s support page provides access to user manuals.

Connect the DVD player with HDMI
- Turn off the TV and DVD player before connecting them.
- Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the DVD player’s HDMI output and the other end to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Turn on the TV and DVD player.
- On the VIZIO remote, press Input and select the HDMI input used. If the TV labels ports as HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or similar, match the selection to the port’s label.
- Insert a disc and start playback using the DVD player’s controls or remote.
VIZIO’s VO370M/VO420E manual recommends HDMI for DVD players with a digital interface. Its instructions are for those specific legacy TV models, but the basic HDMI connection works when the player and TV both have the corresponding ports.

If the DVD player has older connections
DVI output
The VO370M/VO420E manual documents connecting a DVD player’s DVI output to a TV’s HDMI input with an HDMI-to-DVI cable. DVI carries video in this setup, so connect the player’s red and white audio outputs to the TV’s corresponding audio jacks as well. Check the manual for your exact TV model before relying on this arrangement: the required audio inputs may not be available on another model.

Component, S-Video, or composite AV
The same legacy manual describes component video with separate red and white audio plugs, S-Video with separate audio, and composite AV using a yellow video plug plus red and white audio plugs. These are not guaranteed to be present on newer VIZIO TVs. Before buying a cable or converter, confirm that the TV has the matching input and that its manual explains how to use it. If the player and TV have no matching connection, check both model manuals to identify a compatible conversion path.
For the specific TV generation covered by that manual, VIZIO labels HDMI “Best,” component and S-Video “Better,” and composite “Good.” Treat those labels as guidance for those legacy models, not as a universal ranking for every current TV.

Fix a missing picture or sound
- No picture: Confirm that the DVD player is powered on, the cable runs from the player’s output to the TV’s input, and the TV is set to the input where the cable is connected.
- Picture but no sound with DVI: Connect the separate red and white audio cables in the documented DVI arrangement, and make sure they go to the TV’s corresponding audio jacks.
- The player has red, white, and yellow plugs: These are composite AV connections. Check that the TV has matching composite inputs; the presence of those plugs on an older player does not mean a newer TV supports them.
- The input name is different: Use the TV’s Input control and select the port actually used. Labels and menu wording can vary by model.
