Use the matching Confluence: Journey’s Start server pack, not a generic Terraria server download. The current CurseForge project metadata identifies the pack as a Minecraft 1.21.1 project running on NeoForge, and its recent server artifact is ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12. Install the same client release for every player, run the corresponding dedicated server files, configure access and networking, then verify a second player can join.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
There is an important naming mismatch: Terraria’s official documentation describes Host & Play, dedicated servers, port 7777 and settings such as world and maxplayers, while the current Journey’s Start project metadata says Minecraft 1.21.1/NeoForge. Treat the Terraria documentation as a useful explanation of hosting concepts only. Do not copy Terraria configuration files or assume port 7777 applies to the NeoForge server unless the server files explicitly define it.

What you need before setup
Gather the client and server files before creating a world. The Confluence: Otherworld installation page identifies Confluence: Journey’s Start as the official modpack distribution and points to a separate server-pack download. CurseForge’s current project page lists Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and reports a recent project update on August 24, 2026. It also lists 175,967 project downloads and the server-pack artifact ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12.
- Every player needs the same Journey’s Start client release.
- The host needs the server pack that matches that client release.
- The host computer needs enough storage for the server files and world backups.
- For internet play, you need a reachable host address and firewall/router rules that allow the server’s configured port.
- For a persistent world, the server machine must stay available even when the original player leaves.
Do not mix a newer client with an older server pack, or combine files from different Journey’s Start releases. Modded clients and servers commonly reject one another when their mod lists or loader versions differ, and a version mismatch is the first thing to eliminate when diagnosing connection errors.

Resolve the Terraria-versus-Minecraft ambiguity
The title uses “Terraria modpack,” but the current project record supplied for Journey’s Start is a Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge project. That distinction changes which files and launch process you should use:
- For Journey’s Start: follow the official Confluence: Otherworld installation instructions, download the matching CurseForge server pack, and launch the NeoForge server files included with that pack.
- For a genuine Terraria or tModLoader server: use the Terraria server files and configuration documented by the Official Terraria Wiki instead. Those files are not interchangeable with a Minecraft NeoForge server pack.
The Official Terraria Wiki’s Host & Play and dedicated-server guidance is still useful for deciding whether you want a temporary session or an always-on process. Its documented default port of 7777 and settings such as world, autocreate, seed, worldname, difficulty, maxplayers, password, motd, secure, upnp and npcstream belong to the Terraria server workflow. A Journey’s Start NeoForge server may use different names, defaults and ports; rely on the files shipped with that server pack.

| Hosting mode | Best fit | What you control | Availability | Networking work | Cost and support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host & Play | Short co-op sessions where the host is present | World and session settings while the host is playing | Usually ends when the host stops the session | Generally simpler for local or invited play; internet access still depends on the game’s connection method | Uses your own computer and connection; no provider support |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | A persistent world on a home computer or separate machine | World files, configuration, backups, update timing and process uptime | Can remain online independently of a player session | May require firewall rules, port forwarding and a stable LAN address | Uses your hardware and bandwidth; you handle maintenance |
| Managed hosting | Players who want an always-on endpoint without operating the machine | Game settings and files exposed by the provider; infrastructure operations are delegated | Depends on the provider’s service and the plan you choose | Usually supplies a public endpoint, reducing home-router work | Recurring fee and provider support; current prices, limits and compatibility must be checked before purchase |
For two or three people playing occasionally, Host & Play is the least operational work. Choose a dedicated server when the world should continue while the original host is offline. Managed hosting trades direct machine access for convenience; confirm that the provider supports Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and the specific Journey’s Start server pack before paying.
Install the Journey’s Start client pack
- Open the official distribution instructions. Use the Confluence: Otherworld installation page’s Journey’s Start distribution rather than an unofficial repack.
- Record the release details. Note the Minecraft version, NeoForge version and Journey’s Start file version shown by the current project entry. At the time covered here, the project is listed for Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge.
- Install the client for each player. Every participant should use the same release and loader. Avoid adding, removing or replacing mods until everyone can launch the same pack.
- Launch once before inviting anyone. Confirm that the pack reaches its normal title screen and that the installed profile reports the expected Minecraft and NeoForge versions. This catches an incomplete client installation before server troubleshooting begins.
If one player has a different loader or pack revision, update or reinstall that player’s profile before changing server settings. A clean, identical client baseline makes later connection errors much easier to interpret.
Download the matching server pack
- Open the Journey’s Start project’s recent files. The current CurseForge listing exposes a separate server-pack file rather than requiring you to assemble a server from the client archive.
- Select the file that matches the client release. The recent artifact shown in the listing is
ServerPack_1.2.4-3.12. Use that file only when its Minecraft, NeoForge and modpack release metadata matches the client installation you intend to run. - Download from the project’s server-pack entry. Keep the original archive until the server has started successfully and players have joined; it provides a known-good recovery copy.
- Extract into a dedicated server directory. Use a folder reserved for this world and server process. Do not extract over a different modpack’s files, because leftover mods or configuration can create a false version mismatch.
The server pack is the authoritative source for the server-side files. Do not copy random client-only files into it or delete files simply because their names are unfamiliar. If the pack includes a launch script or server executable, use that supplied launcher for the operating system you are running.
Start a dedicated server
Windows
Open the extracted server directory, identify the launch script or server executable supplied with the pack, and start it from that directory. Keep the window visible during the first launch so you can read startup errors and the address or port the server reports. Windows firewall may display a permission prompt; allow the server on the network profiles you actually use, and avoid opening it to networks you do not trust.

Linux
Run the server binary or supplied launch script from the extracted directory. The Official Terraria Wiki specifically recommends using tmux or screen so a server process survives logout. Start a named session, launch the server inside it, detach, and later reattach when you need to read logs or stop the process. This keeps the process independent of an SSH connection without claiming that the Terraria executable itself is the correct launcher for Journey’s Start.
macOS
Use the macOS launch procedure and file locations documented for the server files you downloaded. If the operating system blocks an unrecognized executable, approve it only after confirming that it came from the official project distribution. Keep the terminal or server window available until startup completes and you have recorded the reported connection details.
First-start discipline
- Start the server with no players connected while you inspect its console output.
- Record the generated world location, configured address and port, and any warning that identifies a missing or incompatible mod.
- Stop the process using the launcher’s normal shutdown method before moving files or changing versions.
- Make a backup of the world and configuration after the first successful start, before applying updates.
Create or select the world
A dedicated server can load an existing world or create one automatically. The documented server configuration model supports choosing the world, world size, seed, world name and difficulty. The exact option names depend on the game and server implementation, so use the names exposed by the Journey’s Start server files rather than pasting Terraria arguments into a NeoForge configuration.
Loading an existing world
Place the existing world where the server’s world-path setting expects it, then select it through the supplied configuration or startup interface. Preserve the world’s original backup until at least one player has entered and confirmed that blocks, inventories and progression appear correctly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Creating a new world
Set the desired world size, seed, name and difficulty before the first creation run. A fixed seed is useful when all players want a reproducible generation result; leaving the seed at the server’s normal random behavior produces a new world. Write down the chosen values so a later recreation does not accidentally produce a different map.
Terraria configuration reference
The following options are documented by the Official Terraria Wiki. They are included to clarify Terraria’s dedicated-server model, not as a promise that the Minecraft NeoForge pack accepts the same keys.

Set access controls
Choose a player limit that matches the group rather than leaving capacity unnecessarily high. The Terraria documentation allows maxplayers values from 1 through 255, but the Journey’s Start server may expose its own limit. Set a password when the server is reachable from the public internet, and use a clear message of the day to tell players which pack release and address to use.
- Player limit: Set the server’s supported maximum for your group.
- Password: Use a non-obvious value and share it privately.
- Message of the day: State the world name, maintenance window or required client version.
- Security option: Leave the server’s documented secure mode enabled unless a specific compatibility instruction tells you otherwise.
- Ban list: Keep moderation files with the server directory and include them in backups.
Do not publish the password in an open chat or paste it into a public server listing. If a player cannot join, verify the address, port and pack version before disabling security controls.
Configure networking
Local-network play
For players on the same home network, use the host computer’s private LAN address and the port reported by the running server. Assigning the host a static LAN address, or reserving its address in the router, prevents the connection target from changing after a reboot.
Internet play
Internet players need the host’s reachable address and the server’s configured port. Home hosting may require a router port-forwarding rule to the server machine and a matching operating-system firewall rule. Forward only the port the server actually uses, and send the correct protocol and address to your players.
The Official Terraria Wiki documents 7777 as Terraria’s default server port. That number should not be assumed for a Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge server: use the port shown in the Journey’s Start server configuration or startup output. If you are actually configuring a Terraria server, 7777 is the documented default and still must be allowed through the router and firewall for outside players.
Address checklist
- Confirm the server process is running and listening on the intended port.
- Confirm the firewall rule applies to the active network profile.
- Confirm router forwarding points to the host machine’s current LAN address.
- Give local players the LAN address and remote players the public address, when your network setup requires that distinction.
- Do not test from the same network using a public address if your router lacks hairpin-NAT support; test with a second player outside the LAN or use the local address.
Keep the server online
Host & Play is tied to the host session, so it is appropriate when everyone plays at the same time. A dedicated process can remain online on a separate machine. On Linux, run it inside tmux or screen so logout does not terminate the process. On Windows or macOS, keep the dedicated server process running in its own session and prevent the host machine from sleeping during scheduled play.

Before planned maintenance, notify players, stop the server cleanly, copy the world and configuration backup, apply one change at a time, and start again while watching the console. Keeping the previous server-pack archive makes it possible to restore the known-good files if an update fails.
Test the connection before inviting the whole group
- Start the dedicated server and wait for its normal ready state.
- Have a second player connect with the exact address, port and password you configured.
- Confirm that the player reaches the intended world rather than a newly generated replacement.
- Check that the client and server report the same Minecraft, NeoForge and Journey’s Start release.
- Walk through ordinary play for several minutes while watching for repeated errors, disconnects or world-save warnings.
- Stop and restart the server once, then verify that the same world and player progress load correctly.
This is a validation procedure, not a claim that a hands-on test has been performed. It catches the most expensive mistakes before several players build on the world.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server refuses to start
Read the first clear error in the console rather than the final shutdown line. Check that you extracted the server pack completely, launched the supplied server files from their directory, and did not combine it with files from another release. Confirm that the Java or loader environment required by the pack is installed as stated by the pack’s own instructions; do not substitute a different loader because the filename looks similar.

A player is rejected for a mod or version mismatch
Compare the player’s Minecraft version, NeoForge version and Journey’s Start file with the host’s versions. Reinstall the client profile from the official distribution if necessary. Remove custom client changes only after preserving a copy of the profile so you can restore them later.
The server is visible locally but not from the internet
Test the LAN connection first. If LAN works, inspect the host firewall, router forwarding target, public address and configured port. Confirm that the server is listening on the interface expected by the network. Do not change the modpack or world until the basic address-and-port path works.
The wrong world loads
Stop the server, verify the selected world and world-path settings, and check that the intended world file is in the directory the server uses. Restore from the last known-good backup if the world was overwritten or a failed creation run produced a new map.

The server stops when you disconnect
You are likely using Host & Play or a process tied to your terminal session. Switch to the dedicated server files and keep the process running independently; on Linux, use tmux or screen.

Check the server’s player-limit setting. Terraria’s documented maxplayers range is 1–255, while the NeoForge pack may enforce a different practical limit. Change the value in the server’s own configuration and restart cleanly.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting in practice
Self-hosting gives you direct access to world files, configuration, backups and update timing. It is the better fit when you already have a machine that can remain online and you are comfortable maintaining firewall and router rules. Its ongoing cost is your own hardware, electricity and bandwidth, and support is your responsibility.
Managed hosting removes most infrastructure work and normally supplies a public endpoint, but it adds a recurring fee and places uptime, backups and some controls behind the provider’s service. The CurseForge project page says, “Looking to play with friends? Consider using Wabbanode, who we have partnered with, for a quick and easy setup.” That statement establishes a project partnership, not current pricing, uptime, RAM allocation, referral terms or confirmed compatibility with every Journey’s Start release. Verify those details directly before ordering, especially Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge support.
Updating without losing the world
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the running server normally.
- Copy the world directory, configuration and moderation files to a separate backup location.
- Keep the old server-pack archive untouched.
- Download the new Journey’s Start server pack and confirm that its Minecraft, NeoForge and modpack versions match the clients you plan to update.
- Install the update in a separate directory when possible, then point it at a copy of the world for the first launch.
- Test joining with one updated client before upgrading the entire group.
- Only after the test succeeds, switch the live server to the updated files and retain the pre-update backup.
Never update only the server or only the clients and expect an unchanged modded world to remain compatible. Treat the client and server pack as one versioned set.
