There is no single log that records every stage of a CMPivot run. To find where a query stalls, correlate the console’s CMPivot.log and the SMS Provider’s SmsProv.log with notification, client-execution, and result-processing logs. The key path is: console and provider → management-point notification → client receipt and execution → return processing → console display.
Microsoft documents CMPivot as a near-real-time query feature that uses Configuration Manager’s fast channel to reach connected clients. That means a collection’s membership count is not the number of devices guaranteed to answer: offline or unhealthy clients may not respond, and results can arrive progressively. Microsoft’s CMPivot documentation describes its behavior and prerequisites.
How CMPivot works in the background
CMPivot queries current data from available Configuration Manager clients; it is not simply a view of the last hardware-inventory cycle. Inventory and reports reflect previously collected data, while CMPivot asks connected clients to evaluate a query and return results. The query runs asynchronously, so responses may arrive at different times.
The useful diagnostic model is a chain of stages, not a search for one magic log entry:

- Launch: The console starts the CMPivot task; inspect
CMPivot.log. - Provider request: The SMS Provider handles the operation; inspect
SmsProv.log. - Notification: The management point processes and pushes the task; inspect
BgbServer.logand, where relevant,MP_RelayMsgMgr.log. - Client receipt and execution: The client notification agent receives and dispatches the task, then client execution components process it; inspect
CcmNotificationAgent.logandScripts.log. - Return and display: Client state and results are processed and shown; inspect
StateMessage.log,SMS_MESSAGE_PROCESSING_ENGINE.log,StateSys.log, and the console.
The exact wording and identifiers in log entries can vary by Configuration Manager version and operation. Follow the timestamp and any task, operation, push, or script GUID you can identify; do not rely on a single keyword.
Which CMPivot logs to check
The locations below are common defaults, not guarantees. Site-system roles may be installed on another drive, and environments can use a different log directory. Microsoft’s Configuration Manager log file reference describes the components and log names.
| Stage | Log | Common location | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console task launch | CMPivot.log |
Computer running the Configuration Manager console; console log directory | Details of CMPivot task runs from the console, including local launch or status issues. |
| SMS Provider request | SmsProv.log |
Computer hosting the SMS Provider; commonly C:Program FilesMicrosoft Configuration ManagerLogs |
Provider and WMI activity associated with the operation and task creation or retrieval. |
| Notification dispatch | BgbServer.log |
Management point handling the clients; commonly the site-server log directory | Fast-channel notification processing and delivery attempts. It does not prove a client received or executed the query. |
| MP message handling | MP_RelayMsgMgr.log |
Management point; commonly the site-server log directory | Management-point handling of incoming client messages, including scripts or CMPivot. |
| Client notification | CcmNotificationAgent.log |
Client: %WINDIR%CCMLogs |
Whether the client received and dispatched a notification task. |
| Client execution | Scripts.log |
Client: %WINDIR%CCMLogs |
Script-related execution activity. Correlate it with the CMPivot task before attributing an entry to that query. |
| Client state reporting | StateMessage.log |
Client: %WINDIR%CCMLogs |
Supporting evidence of state-message activity; a clear CMPivot entry is not guaranteed for every run. |
| Site result processing | SMS_MESSAGE_PROCESSING_ENGINE.log |
Site server; commonly the site-server log directory | Processing of client-action results, including Run Scripts and CMPivot. |
| State-system processing | StateSys.log |
Site server; commonly the site-server log directory | Processing of state-system messages. |
Use the actual role host when locating a file. In particular, BgbServer.log belongs to the management-point notification component, not necessarily the machine where an administrator opened the console.
What each stage can tell you
Console: CMPivot.log
Start on the computer running the console. Check whether the action was initiated, the intended collection or devices were selected, and whether a local console error appeared. This log complements rather than replaces SmsProv.log: one records console-side task-run detail, while the other records SMS Provider activity.
Rank #2
- 122 in 1 Precision Screwdriver Set: This precision screwdriver set contains 101 precision bits and 21 auxiliary tools—screwdriver handle, flexible shaft, extension rod, magnetizer, magnetic mat, spudgers, and more. It handles PC maintenance—RAM upgrades, SSD swaps, PC assembly—while also tackling teardowns and repairs of PS4, Xbox, other game consoles, drones, smartphones, tablets (battery and screen replacements), and other electronics. Rare and specialty bits are included for servicing specialized devices.
- Maximize Repair Efficiency: Engineered for efficient repairs, the handle is ergonomically designed and non-slip, fitting comfortably in your hand and spinning smoothly. A 4.56-inch alloy-steel extension shaft offers high hardness and resists bending, while the spring-constructed flexible shaft flexes up to 180° to reach and turn tiny screws deep inside a chassis with ease.
- Dual-Magnet Design: The kit includes two magnetic tools. A magnetizer boosts bit magnetism to pick up screws, and a magnetic mat holds and organizes every tiny screw you remove. Used together, they slash the risk of loss or mix-ups, keeping every teardown and reassembly neat and orderly.
- Quality First: The bits are forged from Cr-V steel and heat-treated to 60 HRC for exceptional hardness, strength, and deformation resistance—ideal for long-term electronic repairs. Spare bits in the most common sizes are also included, so a lost tip never leaves you short, keeping the kit fully functional and extending its service life.
- Compact Storage: Every component is neatly labeled and organized in the case—ready for home, office, or on-the-go use. This all-in-one kit saves money and eliminates service appointments. It’s the perfect household essential and an ideal gift for husbands, dads, sons, or friends who love electronics repair and DIY projects.
SMS Provider: SmsProv.log
On the SMS Provider host, look around the submission time for provider activity associated with the operation, the target collection, and task creation or retrieval. Entries may include identifiers such as ClientOperationId or TaskID, and may show online/offline accounting. These are example markers, not guaranteed literal strings across all builds. If the console shows an attempted launch but there is no corresponding provider activity, investigate console-to-provider connectivity, provider health, access rights, or administrative scope before troubleshooting individual clients.
Management point: BgbServer.log and MP_RelayMsgMgr.log
BgbServer.log records notification-server activity, including task pushing through the fast-channel infrastructure. Look for a task or push identifier, delivery attempts, client counts, and reported errors. It establishes that server-side notification processing or an attempt occurred—not that each target client received or ran the query. If message handling or the return path is in question, also review MP_RelayMsgMgr.log.
Use the canonical names BgbServer.log and Scripts.log. Older references sometimes show BgpServer.log or Script.log; do not treat those spellings as the standard component log names.
Client receipt: CcmNotificationAgent.log
On an affected device, search around the same time for receipt and dispatch activity. This is the key distinction between a task that never reached the client and one that arrived but did not progress. If server dispatch is visible but there is no corresponding client receipt, check whether the device was online, assigned to the expected management point, registered and communicating, and able to use its notification channel.

Client execution: Scripts.log
Look for task-related parsing, execution start, handler activity, completion, and error codes. CMPivot uses client-side execution infrastructure related to Configuration Manager script execution, but CMPivot is not identical to the Run Scripts feature. A script-related entry is useful only when its time and identifiers correlate with the CMPivot operation.
Return processing: state and message-processing logs
Use client StateMessage.log as corroboration, not as a required signature of every successful query. On the site server, SMS_MESSAGE_PROCESSING_ENGINE.log is particularly useful when client execution appears to have happened but the console is blank, delayed, or incomplete. Review StateSys.log when state-system processing is implicated. Missing obvious text in one of these logs is not, by itself, proof that the query failed.
End-to-end CMPivot troubleshooting procedure
- Reproduce against a small, known-online target. Use a test collection of one or a few clients so asynchronous responses and offline devices do not obscure the result.
- Record the run. Note the exact submission time and time zone, console computer, administrator, collection, affected device, query text, and whether you used in-console or standalone CMPivot. Copy any task, operation, push, or GUID identifiers found in the logs.
- Check
CMPivot.log. Confirm the console attempted the intended action and note local errors or identifiers. - Check
SmsProv.log. On the SMS Provider host, correlate the request. Check collection and operation details, online/offline accounting, and provider, WMI, SQL, or permission errors. - Check
BgbServer.log. On the management point serving the clients, determine whether the task was processed and delivery attempted. ReviewMP_RelayMsgMgr.logif message handling is relevant. - Check the client’s
CcmNotificationAgent.log. Establish whether the target received and dispatched the notification. No receipt moves the investigation toward availability, connectivity, assignment, registration, or channel health. - Check the client’s
Scripts.log. If receipt and dispatch occurred, look for execution evidence and errors. If the task never starts, investigate client-agent health, PowerShell prerequisites, security controls, task cancellation, and local resource pressure. - Check return processing and validate the query. Review
StateMessage.log,SMS_MESSAGE_PROCESSING_ENGINE.log, and, where applicable,StateSys.log. Then test whether the query is valid and matches data on a known client. A query can run successfully and return zero rows.
For live inspection, CMTrace is a practical way to read Configuration Manager logs. PowerShell can also follow or search files; these are generic log-inspection techniques, not CMPivot-specific commands:
Get-Content 'C:WindowsCCMLogsCcmNotificationAgent.log' -Wait
Select-String `
-Path 'C:WindowsCCMLogsCcmNotificationAgent.log',
'C:WindowsCCMLogsScripts.log' `
-Pattern 'CMPivot','TaskID','TaskGUID','ScriptGuid','PushID'
Adjust the paths to the actual log directories. Searching by time and identifiers is generally more reliable than searching only for the word “CMPivot.”
Diagnose by symptom
CMPivot does not open or the action appears not to start
If CMPivot.log has no corresponding task activity, focus on the console installation and version, local launch errors, permissions, and collection access. If the console shows the action but SmsProv.log has no matching provider activity, investigate provider connectivity, the provider service, WMI/provider errors, and administrative scope.
The task starts, but no clients respond
When provider activity exists but BgbServer.log does not show task processing, investigate task creation, notification-server health, management-point assignment, and site-system communication. If dispatch is recorded but clients show no receipt, check device availability, client registration and health, management-point reachability, and the network path, including firewall, proxy, or CMG routing where relevant.
The client received the task but did not execute it
If CcmNotificationAgent.log shows receipt but Scripts.log lacks correlated execution, investigate notification dispatch, client-agent and script-handler health, queue contention, PowerShell availability, security policy, and whether the client restarted or cancelled the task.
There are blank or partial results
First distinguish “the query did not run” from “the query ran and matched nothing.” Check client execution and site-side result processing before changing query syntax. Partial responses can be expected when only some collection members are currently connected and able to process the request; compare the collection size with the online and completed-client counts rather than treating membership as guaranteed participation.

Large targets or high-volume queries can make results slower and harder to interpret. Microsoft cautions that some hardware-inventory entities can return multiple megabytes per client. Test on a small collection, limit the queried data where possible, and keep the CMPivot window open while expected responses are still arriving.
The query times out
Microsoft’s CMPivot documentation describes a timeout of approximately one hour. Treat that as documented behavior, not a guarantee that every environment or client will behave identically. Use the logs to identify the stage that stopped progressing, and reduce the target size or result volume when testing a broad query.
Internet-based, co-managed, or CMG clients are affected
Keep the same stage-by-stage model, but verify the actual client’s route and management-point communication in the logs. Management-point reachability, CMG routing, certificates, proxy behavior, and notification-channel availability can change what evidence appears. Co-management alone does not establish a different CMPivot execution path.
Security software or execution policy blocks execution
Microsoft notes that security software can block scripts running from %WINDIR%CCMScriptStore. If notification receipt is present but execution fails, check security-product events and policy for that path; apply any trust or exclusion only in accordance with organizational policy. Microsoft also notes that CMPivot and the Microsoft Edge installer use a Microsoft code-signing certificate, and environments enforcing AllSigned may need to trust the relevant signing certificate on managed devices. These are conditional checks, not universal fixes. See Microsoft’s CMPivot prerequisites and security guidance.
