COMSOL has been named the Official Multiphysics Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship under a multi-year partnership announced on October 7, 2026. In practical terms, Formula E engineers will use COMSOL Multiphysics to study problems where several physical effects interact, and COMSOL will supply software and engineering expertise. It is an engineering collaboration. It is not a consumer product launch, a published team technical contract, or a sponsorship with disclosed financial terms.
What was announced
Both organisations published the news on October 7, 2026. COMSOL’s release is the most detailed account of the arrangement, and Formula E’s own news item agrees on the central facts:

- Designation: COMSOL is the Official Multiphysics Partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
- Length: The partnership is described as multi-year. No end date or renewal terms were published.
- Setting: The partnership was announced at COMSOL Conference 2026 Boston, where Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier gave a keynote on technology and engineering shaping the future of the championship, according to COMSOL’s release.
- Sources: COMSOL’s press release and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship news item, both dated October 7, 2026.
The announcement does not say how much either side is paying, how many projects are planned, or what milestones will mark progress. Anything beyond the stated scope would be speculation.

Most engineering simulation tools model one kind of physics at a time, such as airflow over a body or heat conduction through a solid. Multiphysics simulation models several physical effects together and tracks how each one changes the others. The announcement names electrical, thermal, structural, electromagnetic, fluid, and battery systems as examples of areas where effects interact.

A simple illustration of the general idea, not a description of any Formula E model: a battery pack that heats up changes its internal resistance, which changes how much power it can deliver, which changes the heat it produces. Solving the electrical and thermal problems separately can miss that loop. Coupled models try to capture it. That is the kind of problem COMSOL’s announcement says the partnership is meant to address.
What COMSOL will do, and what is still only an area of exploration
The partnership contains several elements that differ in how firm they are. The table separates what the announcement describes as part of the work from what it only names as an area to explore.

| Element | Status in the announcement | What it means for readers |
|---|---|---|
| COMSOL Multiphysics and engineering expertise | Described as part of the partnership. COMSOL will provide software and expertise; Formula E and COMSOL engineers will use the software on complex, coupled problems. | This is the core, stated scope. The announcement does not list specific projects or outputs. |
| Simulation apps | Area the parties will explore. | No app has been announced as delivered. |
| Digital twin solutions | Area the parties will explore. | No digital twin has been announced as delivered or in use at Formula E. |
| AI-assisted modeling and agentic workflows | Interests named by Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier. | These are stated interests, not evidence that such tools are deployed in Formula E. |
| COMSOL Multiphysics v2027 | Announced for release later in autumn 2026, with capabilities the announcement lists as relevant to advanced engineering workflows. | Capabilities and timing are announced intentions. Current availability has not been independently established. |
Simulation apps
A simulation app packages a model into a simplified interface so that someone who does not build models can change inputs and read results. The announcement lists expanded access for creating simulation apps among the v2027 capabilities. Whether Formula E will use apps internally, and for what purpose, is not stated.
Digital twins
A digital twin is a model kept in step with a physical system, usually by feeding it measured data. The announcement names digital twin solutions as an area to explore. It does not describe what would be modelled, what data would feed the model, or whether any Formula E car or system would be involved.
Rank #3
AI-assisted modeling and agentic workflows
Cherowbrier named AI-assisted modeling and agentic workflows as areas of interest for helping engineers interact with models and explore designs. Agentic workflows generally means software that carries out multi-step tasks with limited step-by-step prompting. The announcement presents these as interests. It does not describe a working tool.
How system-level modeling could connect to the car
COMSOL’s October 7, 2026 blog describes system-level representations that can connect to 1D, 2D, or 3D multiphysics models. It gives the example of a detailed model of a motor, battery, or regenerative braking system feeding into an analysis of the wider vehicle. This is explanatory material from the vendor. It is not a disclosure that Formula E has adopted any particular modeled subsystem.

What the two executives said
COMSOL SVP of Product Management Bjorn Sjodin said:
“Formula E is a great example of why multiphysics simulation matters, as multiple phenomena are at play and constantly interact with one another. We are excited to work directly with Formula E’s technology team and put COMSOL Multiphysics to work on these kinds of real-world challenges.”
Formula E CTO Dan Cherowbrier said:
“Technology is at the heart of Formula E, so partnering with COMSOL makes real sense for us and truly enhances our engineering skillsets. COMSOL gives us a powerful environment for understanding complex systems where many different physical effects are connected, but the opportunity goes beyond individual simulations. We’re particularly interested in how AI-assisted modeling, agentic workflows, and digital twins can help engineers interact with models, explore designs, and make simulation insight more accessible as we continue to push the limits of electric racing.”
