The best computer for a TV hookup is one whose video output matches the TV’s input and supports the display features you need. If both have HDMI, a direct HDMI connection is usually the simplest route. If the ports differ, a compatible adapter may work; wireless options depend on support for Miracast or Google Cast. There is no universal best computer model without knowing your budget, operating system, workload, and display requirements.
Choose the connection before choosing a computer
Check the computer’s video-capable output and the TV’s labeled video inputs before buying a cable, adapter, or computer. A TV can serve as a mirrored or extended display, while Chrome casting is suited to showing a browser tab or screen on a supported receiver. Those are different jobs, so decide whether you need the full computer display or only browser content.

- Direct HDMI: A good starting point when the computer has HDMI output and the TV has an HDMI input.
- USB-C or Thunderbolt to HDMI: Useful when the computer supports video output through that port but the TV uses HDMI. The adapter must suit the computer and desired display mode.
- Miracast: A wireless display option for a Windows PC and a Miracast-capable TV or receiver.
- Google Cast: Lets Chrome cast a tab or screen to a supported Chromecast or Google TV Streamer device; it is not a wired display connection.
Microsoft describes Windows projection to a wireless display specifically for displays that support Miracast. Microsoft’s Windows projection instructions include the Windows+K connection workflow. Google’s Chrome casting instructions require the computer and receiving device to be on the same Wi-Fi network with a strong connection.
Compare the hookup options
| Connection | Best fit | What you need | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct HDMI | Computer and TV are close, both have compatible HDMI ports, and you want the TV as a computer display. | HDMI output, HDMI input, and a suitable cable. | Confirm supported resolution, HDR, refresh rate, and audio across the computer, TV, and cable. |
| USB-C/Thunderbolt to HDMI | The computer has a video-capable USB-C or Thunderbolt port, while the TV has HDMI. | A compatible adapter and HDMI cable. | USB-C ports and adapters vary; check video support and the exact output capability for your setup. |
| Miracast | You want wireless projection from a compatible Windows PC. | Miracast on the PC and TV/receiver, or an HDMI-connected Miracast adapter; Wi-Fi must be enabled. | Confirm protocol support and troubleshoot Wi-Fi, drivers, and receiver firmware if it will not connect. |
| Google Cast | You want to show a Chrome tab or screen on a supported receiver. | Chrome, a Chromecast or Google TV Streamer device, and strong same-network Wi-Fi. | It is a casting workflow, not a direct wired display path. |
The cited setup guidance explains compatibility and procedures, not controlled comparisons of latency, picture quality, or market prices. Choose based on the ports, content, and display features you actually need rather than assuming one route is numerically superior.

How to connect a computer to a TV with a cable
- Identify both ends. Check the computer’s specifications or ports for video output and note which input you will use on the TV.
- Connect matching HDMI ports. Use an appropriate HDMI cable, connect the devices, then select that HDMI input on the TV.
- Bridge different ports only when supported. If the computer uses USB-C or Thunderbolt and lacks HDMI, verify the port carries video and select an adapter compatible with the computer and intended output. Apple lists its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter for supported Macs with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C; the adapter’s capabilities are model-specific. Apple’s adapter information gives its supported configurations. Microsoft lists a Surface USB-C-to-HDMI adapter with an output of up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz; that specification applies to the specified Surface adapter, not to USB-C adapters generally. Microsoft’s Surface adapter instructions explain its setup.
- Select the display arrangement. On Windows, press Windows+P and choose Duplicate or Extend. On a Mac, open Displays settings to configure mirroring, extending, and resolution. Apple’s Mac display guide also covers selecting the TV for sound output when HDMI audio is wanted.
- If the picture does not appear, verify the selected TV input, reseat the cable, confirm adapter compatibility, and check the computer’s display settings.
When wireless is a better fit
Windows projection with Miracast
Use this route only if the PC and receiving display support Miracast. If the TV does not, Microsoft says a Miracast receiver can connect to the TV’s HDMI input. On Windows 11, press Windows+K and select the display. If it is not listed, check that Wi-Fi is on and review the receiver’s Miracast support, PC drivers, and receiver firmware. Microsoft’s wireless display troubleshooting guide covers these checks.
Microsoft’s Wireless Display Adapter connects to the TV through HDMI and uses USB for power, as described in Microsoft’s adapter setup instructions. Check current availability and compatibility for any receiver you consider; do not assume a generic wireless HDMI product supports Miracast.

Chrome casting with Google Cast
Chrome can cast a tab or screen to a supported Chromecast or Google TV Streamer. Follow the Cast workflow in Chrome and keep the computer and receiver on a strong connection to the same Wi-Fi network. This option suits browser or screen casting, not every task that requires a direct computer display. Google’s casting guide describes the supported workflow.

Check resolution, HDR, and audio across the whole setup
The computer’s output, TV input, adapter, and cable all affect which display modes are available. Check the specifications of every part rather than relying on a cable or port label alone. Microsoft’s Windows HDR guidance identifies HDR10 and supported interface classes that include HDMI 2.0 or higher, but that does not mean every computer-to-TV chain supports HDR. Microsoft’s HDR overview explains Windows requirements.

Requirements can be device-specific: Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup guide calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for a 4K HDR setup. That guidance is for Apple TV 4K, not a universal cable rule for every computer-to-TV connection. Apple’s Apple TV 4K instructions state its connection requirements. On a Mac, select the TV as the sound output if you want audio over HDMI, as covered in Apple’s TV-as-display guide.

HDMI cable
If both devices have HDMI, an HDMI cable is the direct physical connection. Choose it for the resolution and other features supported by the complete setup; the phrase “computer to TV” alone does not establish a required cable class.

USB-C-to-HDMI adapter
Buy an adapter only after confirming that the computer’s USB-C or Thunderbolt port supports video and that the adapter supports the output mode you want. Capabilities vary by model, as the Apple and Microsoft adapter pages show.
Wireless receiver
A Miracast adapter is relevant if a compatible Windows PC needs a receiver and the TV lacks native Miracast. A Chromecast or Google TV Streamer device is relevant for Chrome tab or screen casting. Neither is a universal substitute for a direct wired computer display.

Can one computer be named the best?
Not from the hookup question alone. The documented connection guidance does not compare computer models or establish price/value rankings. A useful shortlist depends on budget, operating system, workload, preferred form factor, desired resolution and refresh rate, and the computer’s video ports. Match those criteria to the TV’s inputs and the features required along the signal path before choosing a model.
